The Evil Within is the only game I've played that hits the same spot. Fitting since they were both made by Shinji Mikami. IMO, a big part of the appeal is the sheer variety in scenarios and encounters. That really helps every area of the game feel unique, and makes you feel like you're going on an adventure rather than just playing another game. You could say it was for console gamers what Half-Life was for PC gamers.
I never had an issue with the castle or the island desu. I think some people just wanted the whole game to be different variations on the first village fight, but that's what Mercenaries is for, anyway.

NTA but village > island > castle.

village is probably the most fun when it comes to shooting zombies/zombie-likes. it's also where most of the iconic stuff in the game like the village assault, dr. salvador & the bella twins, el gigante and the cabin defense happen.

outside of the regenerators the island is a pretty solid traditional FPS/TPS section but it's ultimately more fun in the remake. it's also where the krasuer fights and the laser grid happens.

castle is the worst because it's too close quarters with too many corridors while everything is can practically insta-kill you if your not careful.

It was about the atmosphere of the game in the old ones. It became an action game since re4. There’s no way to repair the series now. But I think RE5 was the peak of co-op action. Re4…definitely the goat action single player. They did not know what to do with the latest game, from what I know. RE should be more about the creep factor, puzzling. I’m not sure I like seeing a 20ft tall monster and jeeps and rocket launchers, even though the originals have silly game elements like that, and mirrored in the movies. They are stuck between 5 console eras and changing taste.

to me RE was never about the spooky mansions & secret laboratories. when i think of classic RE i think of RE2, RE3 and the outbreak games. surviving/escaping a zombie infested city before the government wipes said city off the map while i think of RE4, RE5 & RE8 when i think of modern RE. traveling out to isolated parts of the world to deal with whatever nasties that live there ala delta green.

i'd argue there's nothing to fix. the demand for a RE game EXACTLY like the PS1 games is so niche that i can probably count the indie games that try to replicate it's gameplay on one hand (and only one of the is zombie related). the series would've likely died at RE0 had they stuck with the classic formula.

my theory is that when they were developing RE8 they became more and more interested in doing an RE4 remake to the point where they effectively saved all their ideas for the RE4 remake and rushed RE8 out the door so they can start the remake ASAP.

the remake is better gameplay wise imo because of the improved gunplay/combat but it's significantly less campy than the original which was part of RE4's charm.

capcom are cowards for not doing an RE5 remake.

the store had only 1 copy and it was all scratched up of course so there were certain doors you couldn't open or the game would freeze

For me it's the atmosphere
The village actually feels like "somewhere". Like I'm actually exploring a place. The castle feels unimportant, it's just a backdrop to shooting bad guys, it doesn't feel like I'm a operative in a black op in a remote part of a different country anymore. Now I'm just in a game. The village was an interesting place on it's own, the castle is just a stage.

they believe in universal linear progress, that all things and game design only improves as time goes on
to him, the idea that you can't move and shoot in the original is not an informed design decision the developers made, but a limitation they somehow couldn't solve, so adding the ability to move and shoot can only ever be an improvement
not being able to parry is obviously a flaw too, since every modern game has a parry because it's Objectively Good Game Design™. they should really remake games like Joust and Castlevania to have parries

They played only shit like Halo and Cowadooty where you can shoot while moving. In RE4 it's quite obvious you can't move while shooting because it's more realistic in this case - Leon has to brace himself for a proper shot, that's how it works in reality. It was made this way since it's a horror game where you have to manage your ammo and equipment, and can't afford to kill every zombie unless you're good with the knife.
