It brought a bunch of genres together like RPGs, platforming, exploration, dungeons crawling and put them into one impressively polished package where it's only flaw was being a little uneven and easy in the difficulty. You're constantly chasing that dragon, and nothing since has quite filled that itch because nothing probably will. It was the last hurray for 2D by one of the premier 2D developers at the peak of their careers. A single indie dev or group couldn't possibly have the talent or time to create anything even as close.
