What's the situation like for you chosen retro console for playing backups on original hardware?
Silky smooth with plenty of options including clones on alibaba?
Or are you held hostage to the market where everyone and their mother thinks their shitty sports games is worth 50 minimum?

I did not realise how insanely priced the mega cd games are. There's literally nothing under £50 except for the arcade collection.

What is wrong with people? Burning discs for it seems to be hit and miss, not sure which CD-Rs are good for it and I don't have a cd burner under x10 speed.

If they got those, they'd have nothing to do but play the games, and retro gaming ABDLs hate playing games. Otherwise they'd be enjoying highly stylized games of any vintage.

There's a greater number of worthwhile 2D games from after 2007 than before :O

No one in my area is able to make mods to the systems, but I'm still always searching. It was difficult saving up, but I did manage to get a few Chinese flashcarts years before all these tariff issues made them unaffordable. These aliexpress clones are old so they lack all the nice features of the real things feature like playing CD games or FPGAs for specialized chips. That's just how things are around here as inflation has gotten out of control and wages failed keeping up.

You can't afford SD cards?

I have seen anyone mod shit IRL since the very, very early 10s when they shut down the computer centre place that used to exist for years.

Don’t wear out your laser with burned cds. Just save up for a terra onion or whatever the Sega cd fpga cart is called.
>>
>>12135014
What if I want the loading times just like I remember them? Though the burned CDs when they're not perfect seem to skip/stutter.
>>
>>12135024
It emulates the read speed perfectly. It’s required for games with streaming video and audio. Games took advantage of the slow read speed and delayed audio to fit with the video. If you sped up the read speed they’d be completely out of sync.

For what it's worth my Mega CDs seem to take CD-Rs burned with my modern BD drive just fine. Maybe they're just in good shape. Might as well try throwing a few burns out and see what happens.
Regardless if you don't use the things from worrying about wear then why bother having them at all? I also think optical pickups fail much less often than people say they do. It's usually the components driving it that drift out of spec so a good service and recalibration will typically get a dodgy drive going again.

I do use it to play official games occasionally for the fully authentic experience but I already have the Sega cd flashcart so I would rather not strain the laser by reading burned cds.

Have you got originals? For the life of me I cannot remember how often the end of act went out of sync in Sonic CD.

£60 for Sonic CD (one of the most poorly designed Sonic games imo) is pretty steep.
>>
>>12135162
the only original I have is Sonic CD JP which I got for surprisingly cheap. I don't have any others because like you say the market for them is retarded.

I have flash carts and ODEs or other ways to boot ISOs on every console I own. I wish PS2 would get a real ODE the current soft mod options are kinda annoying to use.

this is true. even just burning discs for them or playing out of region originals without a modchip is a minor ballache and said modchips are either difficult to find or I'm not looking in the right places (nevermind how complex they are to wire in too).
Countless people will tell us "oh just use OPL with a hard drive/SMB/some experimental protocol" and insist that it just werks when it really fucking doesn't.
>>
>>12135195
I use OPL with a Sony hard drive adapter with one of them IDE to SATA boards in it. I use HDL Loader to put the games on the SSD I use. All the FAT forks of OPL have been nothing but problems for me. With my current setup it's mostly smooth sailing but you gotta load games with different software which isn't too bad. With all that said, I'd love a Xstation 2 or whatever just to load games off a SD card and be done with it.

Also, if you are just starting out and want 5th gen and back and you have nothing. Just get a mister device.

I'm lucky enough to have a full lineup of systems from decades past before the market went all retarded so I'm mostly sorted. I've got flashcards/modchips for most all of them except the Famicom because FUCK ME the Everdrive N8 is expensive and I don't trust the clones to do mappers and expansion audio properly.
>>
>>12135212
I had a few clones of the N8 Pro and had issues so I just got the official one and it's been smooth sailing. I also got one of them FC Lava Famicoms which uses the CPU and PPU from real Famicoms but the PCB and all other components are new. It has the cleanest audio I ever heard from an original Nintendo. When my recapped AV Famicom had some analog hum in it

I know they're prone to failure, but I opted to buy two like new fat ps3s for this reason. Ps2 discs and internal disc loading work perfectly without any issues. I still hope someone bothers on fixing the ps2 scene. Even the gamecube scene has had more love.
>>
>>12135375
I gave up on Phat PS3s a while ago. Too many issues vs OPL on the PS2.
>>
>>12135385
I couldn't even play through gitaroo man on the opl. I had to use some mix of hdl loader and other crap. It just works on the ps3. If I were to worry I can just pay to frankenstein the damn thing. It sucks, but there are no other solutions or people working on the ps2 scene.
>>
>>12135397
With my setup of OPL and HDL I haven't found a game that I can't run. I'll give Gitarooman a shot tonight to test my setup.

I Frankensteined my Phat BC model, it's sitting on my shelf right now since I still prefer gaming on my real PS2 and PS3 games run quieter on my slim then even my Frankie PS3
>>
>>12134831
Not really. I have since got some 32GB ones which finally dropped to acceptable prices, plus that is the limit to a very common file system.

>>12134998
With 3D printers and availability of flex cable or PCB production the options opened up greatly, but I guess there's just no money in it for anyone with soldering skills or knowledge of retro systems. There was a sort of swap meet last year with a table, but all they did was 2600 mods. The only computer store around now is Microcenter.
>>
>>12135484
I accidently left behind my sega cd and 32x when I moved out of my old apartment. How's the Megasd for cd games?
