If you've been out of the loop things have progressed quite far in this regard, and gotten a lot easier. I'm enjoying being able to finally read Gamest issues at my leisure, instead of painstaking OCR and older machine translation programs.

I've tried google translation with Famitsu and the results are quite bad
>>12137670The results are better with high res scans but kanji is always a toss up
>>12137670Try again, things have changed.
>>12136818Correction: you THINK it's good at translation. But unless you're fluent in Japanese and are able to compare to the original text than you actually have no way of knowing whether it's good or not (spoiler: it's not)
>>12139619>t. Trannylator trying desperately to stay in business.
>>12139634I'm a software engineer at an AI company. You're a faggot.
>>12139619Yeah yeah go get folded a thousand times, Faggot-kun.
>>12139634>It's okay when my preferred way changes things and is inaccurate
I've explored some old Japanese magazines with this. Its not perfect, but it does a respectable job. Here's a Japanese DOOM review from 1994. I'd say I got all the key points the reviewer was trying to make. It translates 笑 as "lol" instead of "laugh" which I find funny considering how many people on this board go on about how machine translation doesn't localize stuff.
>>12136818Wake me up when ai can properly translate text from old japanese videogames because it borders on useless for that currently
>>12139619Okay. Give us an example then. If you can't, you're wrong.
>>12139739Okay, wake up.

>>12139672>software engineerOh wow another fake job that will soon be replaced by based AI.
>>12140005Thats literally impossible. You don't know what AI is or how it works at all. The bubble will pop soon anyway and then the industry will move on to it's next grift, meanwhile I'll still be at my job, working from home and playing retro games all day just like always.
>>12139931Funny how noone ever made that argument when it comes to fan translations; and nobody had an issue with people not fluent in the source language reviewing fan translations...
>>12140080Funny how this fool taps all kinds of ridiculous bullshit and imagines anyone is going to believe it.
I use gogle lens to translate some mags I have myself. It's a bit better at translating than google translate for some reason. It helps but I still need to tinker with the translation though.
>>12139619Nah, it's pretty good.
>>12139931What's your alternative solution? Learn how to read Japanese fluently ? I'm not doing that. So what else ya got?
>>12139619It's still better than nothing, or than having a trannylator work on it
>>12136818That's pretty cool, I'd never be able to read them otherwise because I'm more willing to learn learn Indian or Brazilian to shit post more effectively than to learn Japanese to read about a video game.

>>12140178>I use gogle lens>it helps but I still need to tinker with the translation though.Because you need to fuck it up so it looks like something someone hwo needs ot use "gogle lens" would produce. >>12139619The reality is neither this nor the people claiming the opposite: the actual answer is somewhere in-between because, the method through which you translate is key. If you are asking AI the batch translate an entire page, yes, it will be bad. But, if you do a more segmented translation with hundreds maybe thousands of requests, then the quality will be a lot better. The sad truth is you still need to prompt AI correctly to get a high quality translation on the level that is considered to be the state-of-the-art. But you can also just prompt it once for the whole magazine and get garbage as a result
>>12141239>If you are asking AI the batch translate an entire page, yes, it will be bad.I read enough Japanese to know that it's getting the basic information across pretty well, and I'm familiar enough with the source material to get a deeper feel of what the author intended.
>>12136818Yes, and it's going to shatter a lot of the established history of the western retro gaming sphere as people learn about Japanese gaming from the direct sources.
>>12141253I'm more familiar with visual novel translation, and there, the nuance of how a sentence is delivered is much more important. Because it's trying to reach the reader on an emotional level. But for just getting information and trivia, then yeah, it might be perfectly good enough
>>12139619Nta but >>12141239 is right. It's still better than making shit up, but making the translation sound natural and nuanced in English (especially for retro games with space limitations) is still something AI struggles with. It's doable for very technical passages, but for flowery or metaphoric passages, you need to work with it a little harder or it will just default to clunky, soulless sentences.
>>12139619>spoiler: it's notIt's pretty good. Cope with that however you need.
>>12141268I'm using it to read fighting game strategy articles and so far everything has made perfect sense because I understand the context.

>>12141456boy you sure are mad
>>12141456>she actually wasted time learning moon runesfuckin YIKES!
>>12136818I've noticed that it works better if you don't give it extra context. Just "Translate from Japanese to English. Don't skip any text."
>>12140937a perfect example of reactionaries eating shit just so they can make someone they hate mad, its pathetic

>>12142002>learn japanese>become whiny about AI for the rest of my lifeOOF, glad I dodged that bullet
Another Japanese reader chiming in, AI is dogshit when it comes to translation. It has no way of thinking so it struggles immensely with context, which is a problem because when translating to English you have to add that context back in in many places. This isn't really a glitch that can be ironed out, it's an inherent flaw with AI translation. >>12141239No the issue is the meeting of those, if you don't take full passages you don't get important context, if you take full passages it gets confused and hallucinates. If you want to use AI translation go ahead but know that it'll be even worse than the fan translations and localisations you've spent your entire adult life whining about

>>12142496Things have changed. We're not talking about google translate from even a year ago.
>>12141631>im proud to know lessI can't tell if this is a troll or you genuinely feel this way.
>>12142496Again, what is your alternative? I am not going to learn Japanese.I am not going to pay someone to translate these magazines for me.That leaves A.I. translation. And I do not believe your criticisms too strongly because I had 2 years of Japanese coursework from college, and I still read hiragana and katakana decently. Although I am far from a fluent reader, I know that these articles about video games are talking about what the expected content would be. I can tell quite a lot from the context and images on the page. If I'm reading a strategy article about a fighting game or shmup I know what to expect.> but know that it'll be even worse than the fan translations and localisations you've spent your entire adult life whining about1. Again, where is the alternative?2. I did not whine about those. Where did OP or the person you replied to whine about those translations?
