Black Isle did a lot to make you feel like previous incarnations of The Nameless One were completely different characters working against you. Pharod, Morte, Dak'kon, Vhailor and Ignus all suffer because of something a previous incarnation has done, but they're also unfortunately bound to help the current incarnation. Raiding your own trap-ridden tomb and reading all the sensory stones of horrible memories and crimes that may or may not belong to you. And then confronting three of your other incarnations at the end of the game. Ravel isn't the villain and neither is The Transcendent One. The antagonist is ultimately just different shades of the protagonist.
