I beat Halo CE for the first time yesterday, I decided to boot up the game 3 days ago after having it in my backlog for decades. I've played Halo games since I was a kid, but aside from Reach never beat any of the campaigns and mostly spent time in Multiplayer. But I absolutely had a blast with this. The thing that made me keep coming back was how fun and arcadey the game is. You can easily just hop back in at any time and get sucked into the combat loop and story. With modern games I feel like there's too much bloat in between gameplay, but this is just so sharp and to the point. What are some other games from around the time like this? They don't necessarily have to be shooters, though it would be prefered, but I'd like to play more stuff with this design philosophy in mind that balances the having an engaging story with fun short gameplay sessions. Metal Gear Solid had a similar feeling for me too.

Why doesn't /vr/ want to talk about fps that aren't Halo?
>>12140695*00s fps that aren't Halo
>>12140695Very good question. We need more Doom threads.

>>12140664I'm not some local spammer, haven't actually visited /vr/ in years.>>12140695didn't realize you guys had an issue with Halo here, it only came to mind for me because of the recent announcements.
>>12140707There is an increase of spam/inorganic Halo:CE threads on /vr/ recently, so whether or not you're genuinely interested in discussion, some people are gonna take issue. Looking at the catalog, most was cleaned up but at one point there was like six threads about the game at once. On a slow board like this it's impossible it was good-faith.The rest of the MCC games are worth your time though only Halo 2 is retro. TS:FP is much goofier than Halo, but typically follows the cutscene -> shoot shit loop and is also a console FPS so it plays very nicely on controller if you did so for Halo. The ratchet and clank games are TPSes, have a few more interruptions than Halo, but the best sections of the game give you a bit of story then let you kill bad guys and repeat. The first game has far and away the best story, later entries have more streamlined combat. If puzzles/mini-games piss you off, start with UYA/deadlocked instead.

Why does the movement in Halo feels so slow and floaty, especially compared to other FPS from this time
>>12140662Well, the closest style of games I can think of, OP, is the Marathon trilogy, also made by Bungie, which are also a blast to play through with great story!
>>12140662>I'd like to play more stuff with this design philosophy in mind that balances the having an engaging story with fun short gameplay sessions.
>>12141157Because it was made for consoles at a time when console players were only accustomed to slow fps games.
>>12142143>Because it was made for consoles at a time when console players were only accustomed to slow fps games.Maybe, but I have my doubts when marathon was slow and floaty too implying it was just bungie's style. Hell, fucking DOOM is a bit on the slow side with its triple buffered long acceleration on movement. FPS being snappy was more of a Quake thing and not really repeated by many others.
JUST beat this for the first time and man was it boring. I like how they made the game cyclical to match the name Halo, but it meant there's only like 4 or 5 levels in the whole game and you just retread through them. No boss fights. Nothing exciting ever happens. Just nothing to break the monotony. Very little story either. It's odd. The good aspects are REALLY good, but there's just not enough there.
>>12140745it seemed organic to me. Halo is one of the most popular retro games. Do you think it's spam when there are 5 nintendo threads?
>>12140695They aren't good
I saw a post on 4chan a long long time ago that said Halo would be on playstation consoles in the future. Sometime around 2007-2008.
>>12140662I present you Halo, but you are a vampire in the Wild West. It's a decent game

>>12142621Nintendo is both a broader topic and a bigger retro staple, I'm less inclined to believe it is spam. I don't really think the separate threads were so unique that most of them couldn't have been condensed into one or maybe two discussions. With the remake announcement, I admit there's a larger chance more people really wanted to talk about it, sure, but there are definitely coordinated efforts on this website to steer discussion or sentiment, I'm just hoping /vr/ isn't becoming one of those places where it happens.
