Despite the current trendiness of "ps1/2/dreamcast" due to vaporwave and hyperpop I really just have come to feel gaming lost its soul after the 16 bit era
Those games in pic related are pretty one of a kind though. Trying to paint the image of tons of Halloween monster movie games in the 16-bit era when that's not the case at all.
I concur
>>12141160Games lost their soul after the 8 bit micros and 3rd generation of consoles. Once you can display hundreds or thousands of colors, you lose your identity, and just become another in a hodgepodge of nigh-identical platforms.
>>12141160Finally you guys are seeing it. Not saying N64 isn't delightful in its ways. (nothing beats the first Turok for its surreal liminal feels) But anything past 16-bit-style wise anyway-isn't just visual overkill it's a wholesale clumsifying of the controls.Another way to look at is it that "classic video games" stopped with the 16-bit era, and I'm fine with that.
>>12141995>classic video games" stopped with the 16-bit era, and I'm fine with thatYeah and really the only way to define "retro" is as different from the current, and the only thing different about 3D fifth Gen or sixth Gen is more polished graphics each year
>>12142436>and the only thing different about 3D fifth Gen or sixth Gen is more polished graphics each yearSo true. Ever since then and even now it's all:>THE BLADES OF GRASS REFLECT WATER REALISTICALLY!>"Is the game fun?">*crickets*
>>12142745It stopped being games largely and started becoming more like interactive movies and simulations. I know many people who refuse to touch a game you actually win or lose in and just want to chop wood in a 3D forest and chat
>vaporwave and hyperpopI'm too old/young for this shit
>>12143556>It stopped being games largely and started becoming more like interactive movies and simulations.Yeah. For better or for worse, seems OoT was the doorway, seems to me anyway. Instead of taking it as face value, they said to themselves: "it needs to be *exactly like real life, right down to losing money.">I know many people who refuse to touch a game you actually win or lose in and just want to chop wood in a 3D forest and chatThat's quite sad and even alarming. A total inversion of life priorities. -t. rather chop some real wood and chat with a real friend or neighbor, then go inside and play NES by myself in shame as God intended
