Sonic Adventure 2 aged like wine. What went so right here?
>>
They made it with the expectation that it would most likely be the final Sonic game, and everything about it is so epic and climactic that maybe Sonic should have ended there.

i would say that the INTENTIONS aged like wine. the cool parts are cool. the actual execution... its still a janky mess. i forgive it and love it though.
>>
It just has so much effort and budget put into a concentrated nectar of autism. Like the star wars prequels. It might objectively be a bit shit but it has so much flavor and genuine artistry. A truly epic shit game that transcends norms and lands squarely as an eternal 8/10

I don't get the hate for the SA (DC) games. There are some flaws but still great ideas and design. Still the best 3D Sonic games.
SA2 feels like the life of the DC was just starting.

> what went right
Music, speed. That’s all it takes. That’s why the only modern game that sort of recaptures a semblance of that feeling is Shadow Generations.

After SA2 we never got a soundtrack like it again. Not much I can say about it that hasn’t been said, it’s packed full of bangers spanning multiple genres.

There’s one detail about speed that never gets talked about, and that’s the character animations. Look at how Shadow runs in this game; leaning all the way forward, fast, full strides with arms wildly pumping back and forth; he is booking it. Every game since, he takes these long, slow, leisurely strides like he’s at the roller rink, just cruising around.

What's wrong with it?

Even in 2007 I felt this game aged like shit. Buggy nightmare with garbage VA, level design, and gameplay.

VAs were fine, it was playback errors which messed those scenes up. As far as gameplay goes, treasure hunting understandably isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, but that doesn’t make it bad. The speed levels remain the best that the franchise has ever had. Though if you aren’t playing on DC you’re missing out on details like rails actually functioning that make a difference in enjoyment.

Ska.

>Sonic Adventure 2 aged like wine
This thing was atrocious on arrival.

Inaccurate jumpy physics on the sonic levels leading to a feeling of unfairness and disbelief, undertuned level design for the vehicle levels leading to frustrating platforming and awkward unsatisfying challenge spikes, the emerald hunts were pretty good
Boss fights are mostly mid
Chao garden was pretty awesome but they could have taken it farther. Not a huge complaint there.
I'd give it an 8/10 for its uniqueness alone but all it would have taken was ONE developer who was a bit better at physics and one who could fine tune the challenge to make it a masterpiece

>Inaccurate jumpy physics
Sonic's physics and controls are sublime.
>feeling of unfairness
Jesus man, back in the day people complained that Sonic was too easy. When did Sonic become this gruelling masochist platformer on par with NES Ninja Gaiden?
>>
>>12145462
I just don't agree man. This isn't good-hard like Castlevania on the Nes, where the difficulty is a result of extensive playtesting and improvement.
It's the opposite, it's annoying, the result of inadequate playtesting.
>>
>>12141915
I love Adventure 2, but you're right.

>back in the day people complained that Sonic was too easy
Why do you find Sonic difficult? Have people become more retarded over time?
>>
>>12145420
>the emerald hunts were pretty good
Literally the worst part.
>>
>>12145465
The camera only makes things worse.
>>
>>12141503
It was and still is trash. Same as 1
>>
>>12141503
As >>12141509 said they put their absolute all into it thinking it would be the last Sonic game ever, and the narrative is appropriately written to be just that.

It's jammed full of content and is fun as fuck to play. The level design is great for the most part and many issues with the first Adventure have been sorted out (other than the emerald radar, the game's one true flaw), with the presentation having been raised to another level. The music and sound effects are killer.

It treads an extremely fine line between a serious story and knowing it's a goofy Sonic game, without leaning too hard in either direction like they constantly have ever since. The missions are fun and change up the levels just enough to keep them engaging to play through multiple times. The Chao Garden is the perfect downtime to the rest of the game, where you can gradually progress raising up the best little shits you can make while you make your way through all the missions and such.

Even the multiplayer is pretty fun as a distraction and has a lot of fun bonus characters to it. I think the weakest link is the kart racing and even then it's not THAT terrible for something thrown in there as a bonus.
