Tell me about Turok. Are you a fan of the series? Favorite entry? Disappointments?
>>
I like them but I hate that they're really not about dinosaurs
>>
>>12142516
Played the pc remaster up to the last level before drifting away, it was quite nice.
>>
>>12142516
First game still the best one and also the best ost
>>
>>12142516
Turok 1 is one my favorite games ever, 3 I thought was one of the worst fpses i've played, 2 is okay. Haven't played Evolution or the 08 game yet.
>>
3 rules. 1 is all jungles and 2 is all tedious mazes.
3 has variety and cool weapons.

2 > 1 > 3 > Everything else

3 could've been magnificent, but they ended up splitting dev efforts to create 2 campaigns instead of 1 full one. So you need to play Turok 3 twice to get the full effect, and a lot of it will feel redundant. They really fucked themselves with that "dual character storyline" shit, when they really didn't need to, like, at all.

It could've been so fucking good...Nothing infuriates me more than thinking of the wasted potential of Turok 3, and Duke Nukem Forever. Turok 3 is great up until you get to the Lost Land. Then it just proceeds to shit the bed repeatedly with boring, samey level design, unfinished, tedious maze solving, and shooting-gallery enemies.
>>
>>12142516
Turok 2 was the first console FPS I ever played, discounting the "Doom-llike" segments in SNES Jurassic Park.
It's a series I've always been partial to. Never got around to playing the first one but played and completed 2, Rage Wars and 3. Dabbled a little with Evolution and 2008 but never owned them.
Playing 3's multiplayer with bots + my brother was some good times.
>>
I love 1. and I really like the aesthetics and idea. I wish 2 and 3 didn't suck so bad
>>
i like the first one a lot
>>
>>12142516
i love this game, the first one. i love the graphics, the sound effects, the 'fog,' the music, everything. it's so fucking kino it's unreal. and some of the later levels like the catacombs are actually creepy. i've been meaning to replay it for like 2 decades but i want to play it on an n64 controller so i continue to suffer.

and while it's definitely not the best in the series, i have hours of fond memories playing Rage Wars with my sister.
>>
>>12142516
Turok was interesting experience.
I played new pc port with setting as close to retro original as possible.
Somehow I haven't gotten around playing turok 2 despite the fact is has been sitting on my pc for the past year.
>>
>>12142516
I played Turok 2 with the luxuries of waypoints, mouselook, and good frame rate and it still tested my patients.

>>
>>12142841
Bro just play the remaster. It's so good.
>>
I got Turok Evolution second hand for like 5 bucks over a decade ago and didn't really play it much.
Is it worth a revisit? I dont think Ive seen anybody talk about it, it seemed ok for a console fps from what i remember.
>>
>>12143180
It is wildly incompetent, so much so that it's one of the very few examples of "so bad it's good".
>>
Started playing through the series this year with the new PC versions.
Turok 1 was a smooth ride where you surprisingly don't hunt many dinosaurs. Levels were fairly fun and the bosses kind of stunk.
Turok 2 I still haven't beat. In the final level. Levels are absurdly big and maze-like, often making it harder to navigate because the levels are broken up by teleporters or one way drops. It's an insane game. Feels monotonous and easy to lose your mind while playing, but in a way it becomes immersive. Not sure how I feel about it.

Really interested in getting to 3 finally.
>>
>>12143613
3 is insanely linear, cheap half life clone that's no joke 45 minutes long if you know where you're going. That had none of the original devs involved so it doesn't even feel like Turok. It's the worst of the 4 real Turok games. (Nobody cares about '08)

Based.
>>
holy shit, i just remembered a recurring dream i used to have based entirely off the look and feel of Turok. the first level was always the same, a short and dense jungle map with an hour glass-shaped starting area; going through the narrow passage lead to a room with shallow water, with another passage to the right (kind of like the Lost Woods in Ocarina). there were some raptors and triceratops (unarmed), but it was always kind of scary. later levels had aspects of the Tree Top levels, with suspended plank bridges and humanoid enemies.

just the fact my brain generated and remembered custom Turok maps in my sleep is awesome. i haven't thought of this in decades. (picrel but much more foliage and smaller space; dinos would sometimes emerge from the brush)
>>
I know people talk about how great Turok 2 is, but I dunno, I've always really liked how weirdly surreal the first one is. Something about its atmosphere just feels really trippy in a good way.
>>
>>12144257
hell yeah dude. Turok 2 is great, really a departure from the first which i respect, and graphically much improved, but it really feels like quite a different game. the original just had this feel, as you put it, a kind of minimalism that made everything pop as it emerged from the haze. it gave it an almost horror vibe, but while also being really cozy and accessible. but then the glowing light and sound and anxiety as enemies respawned. really nice tension: you could linger and explore but not totally let your guard down.

and just little things like the monkeys and wild boars. damn i really need to play this again.

>45 minutes long if you know where you're going

An exaggeration. More like an hour and 45 minutes.
>>
>>12144381
Turok 2 has a heavy apocalyptic vibe, specifically the Port of Adia and the River of Souls. I would say the game peaks at the Lair of the blind ones, and then the Hive of the Mantids and the Primagen's lightship are just...there.
>>
>>12144893
The Hive of the Mantids was good as it is a completed level with a mostly standard layout. It is just the Primagen's ship which falls flat for me.
>>
>>12144881
Are you serious? My fastest time was 18 minutes. Okay, yes with the raptor who is fast but still. The game is insanely short.

It was rushed sadly. Same as Evolution. This IP is cursed which is sad as 1+2 are two of the best fps games ever made
>>
>>12144881
Only reason it takes a long time is because of getting lost in some levels. Once you know the way the levels are that short.
>>
>>
>>12143180
If you must play it, play the Xbox version.
>>
>>12142741
T3 was made by a completely different team after a good chunk of iguana left Acclaim in between the release of T2 and rage wars.
There were rumors that the devs wanted T3 to be a next gen title but Acclaim insisted on an n64 release so they scrambled to create a game in like 9 months, with an inexperienced team.
>>
>>12142516
I love 1 and 2, I've never played the games after that. I prefer Turok 1 to Turok 2 if only because Turok 1 is never annoying or a slog. Turok 2 is a lot of fun, but I find that when I reach Lair of the Blind ones or the Hive of the Mantids I usually put the game down as I need to be a certain mood to play through those levels.

I really love each of these games with the "Plus" mods, especially Turok 1. It lets you bind a dedicated key to the knife, so you can slash at enemies while using another weapon. This makes Hardcore a lot of a fun and a lot more fair.

GameCube version runs at 60fps and you can emulate it on dolphin like a fucking dream with all the modern emulator bells and whistles.

Emulated GameCube is the best way to play Evo
>>
>>12145864
When I get bored I do a randomiser run of 1. It randomly rearranges every item pickup.

I do a run where I find all the keys and chronoscepter pieces on every level. It's always fun.
>>
>>12146005
I've not tried any randomizers. Didn't know there were any
>>
>>12143180
back in the day some online friends and i saw the release of Turok Evolution to try and create a Turok satellite site for gamespy. we were going to call it Island Turok Evolution. then the game came out and it was painfully mediocre. we then sidelined that. thankfully we never really progressed beyond one of the guys doing some logo mockups.
>>
>>12146030
https://turoksanctum.com/randomizer/

The randomiser randomised quite a lot so it may even have the final level unlocked as you begin the game. Which is why I set my own personal goal to get all the keys in each level and not just beat the final boss as soon as possible.
>>
>>12146061
Thanks, I'll give that a try sometime.
>>
>>12146061
What releases will this work on?
>>
>>12146101
The night dive remaster.

You just make a new folder called 'mods' and drag and drop the mod you wanna play in there. And launch the game. That's it. Though there MIGHT be some issues with the very latest update that came out like a month ago. They moved the game over to Kex Engine 4.0. but the version of the game pre-2025 all these mods work 100%

Try out the Turok+ mode, the randomiser and some user made maps.
>>
>>12146479
So the GoG version should work?
>>
>>12146487
Yep. Just go into the games install directory and make that folder.
>>
I really like turok evolution and have never played the old games. I've seen gameplay footage and think they're kinda lame.
>>
>>12142516
Are the GBC and GBA games worth playing?
>>
>>12146507
If you want to know what 1 and 2 are like. Just picture Evolution but actually good.
>>
>>12146710
I tried playing them and didn't really have fun. I don't like the fog. I don't like the respawning enemies. If I wanted a shitty fps from the dinosaur era where I hunt for keys I'd play hexen or heretic.
I like those too so I genuinely think I just have bad taste.
>>
>>12146681
No. Gbc games are ass and the GBA game is a lackluster metal slug clone.
>>
>>12144085
>>12144187
Wait they actually added a dinosaur? What else did they add?
>>
>>12147627
It's cosmetic, you don't fight him. Just a friendly background dude in the tree tops.
>>
>>12144918
Hive of the Mantids is too boring and samey. It doesn't have any real variety to its design. It's just walls, tunnels, and lifts. Lair of the Blind Ones has that great jungle entrance, the two different waterfalls, the thermal vent areas, the underwater segment, the collapsing ceiling area that rumbles...There's a lot more going on, even if the level is a labyrinthine nightmare, it's an interesting labyrinthine nightmare.

You think of Hive of the Mantids and it's just...You either think of glowing alien hallways, or those turrets.
>>
>>12146996
>>12146681
>metal slug clone
Most retarded take on that game I've ever heard. It's nothing like Metal Slug.

The Turok games for the gameboy are generally considered to be competent, if not pretty good. They stand out above a lot of the other ports.
>>
>>12147658
I don't. I think of the big chasms I always had to navigate and those bigass brown bugs. I don't even remember anything except the tunnels in lair of the Blind Ones and lava.
>>
>>12142516
Wish the Wii mote worked on this. It is a real classic like many others from that time. Don't care about the others. It needs a re release and remaster.
>>
>>12147692
You serious bro? It got a remaster like 8 years ago
>>
>>12147692
>>12147729
I can't believe I ever played Turok 1 and 2 on the N64 with that frame rate. They are so smooth on PC with the remasters. Also, get the Plus mod for either game. It really enhances both T1 and T2.
>>
My favourite 6/10 franchise. What it lacks in actual good games, it makes up for in pizzazz.
I really think Turok 1 (maybe Turok 3 which I still need to play properly), is the only one that's outright good. 2 is so cool, but so questionable.

To be fair, GBA Turok Evolution is kind of awesome. Metal Slug at home, basically.
>>
Also, man, it sucks that the new one just kind of looks like nothing.
There's such potential there for a game that kind of splits the difference between Metroid Prime and Doom 2016, but with all of the awesome sword and sorcery and lost world stuff Turok is known for.

Developers don't get Turok. They think it's just dinosaurs and guns. Really it's dinosaurs and guns, and Robert E Howard, H. Rider Haggard, and a bit of HP Lovecraft.
>>
The last level from the first game is one of the best fps levels of all time.
>>
>>12148358
2 Is outright good if you have an IQ over 105.
>>
>>12149530
It's good but Lair of the Blind Ones and Hive of the Mantids can be a slog.
>>
>>12146001
God, I understood that fucking meme image.
>>
>>12147658
Hive is better than River of Souls
>>
>>12149585
No, those goddamn jumping mite things are annoying and never fun to fight. It'd be way better if you fought more of the actual alien troopers and the like.
>>
I like the Turok games. The type of fps that forces you to switch your weapons a lot to conserve ammo, which I enjoy.
I had 2 on n64 back in the day and really liked it once I got the hang of it.
Got the PC release of one for like a dollar and had a lot of fun with that. The hard difficulty is very fast paced and intense which I wasn’t expecting but ended up being great. Kind of like serious sam but less repetetive.
>>
>>12149530
there is a point where scale becomes too much. Just because you can navigate a level doesn't mean you necessarily want to. That game is exhausting.
