Xenoblade 1 >>> XII
X structurally is just XIII but since it's on a /vr/ system people don't shit on it
FF5 is the last classic FF game, 6 is sort of a middle ground and 7-9 should only be played if you are into storyshit but 1-9 overall are all great and worth experiencing

4, 5, 6, and 7 are peak Final Fantasy.

>>12142854
The job system in X-2 is better in a lot of ways though and the combat system in general is too, and it's in general a much harder game than 5. Lot of extra content to play around with it too once you've maxed out, like the 100 floor bonus dungeon. Shame about the music being so mediocre though and a lot of the cutscenes being stuff you wouldn't want anyone to see you watching.

I still see lorefag threads on /v/ about ffx that will hit bump limit all the time. we just had an VIII thread here hit bump limit. absolutely no one is talking about XII like that. it was a huge disappointment for anyone who expects good story, characters and pacing aka the main appeal of FF. it doesnt even feel like a FF game and is only enjoyed by supreme autismos who enjoy chore-grind MMO """gameplay""". it absolutely killed the series (and then XIII ensured it was never coming back)

●Train Introduction
Girl: You know Seifer?
Squall: ...Yeah.
Girl: Well, he's the one who introduced me to Cid. Cid is such a nice man. I really didn't think SeeD would come out to help a measly little group like us. But after explaining our situation to him, Cid gave the go ahead right away! Now that you guys are here, we'll be able to carry out all kinds of plans!
Girl: Yes?
Squall: I'm goin' back to the others.
Girl: Ok, let's go! Umm, Squall. Is "he" here?
Squall: ("He"?)
Girl: Seifer.
Squall: ...... No, he's not a SeeD.
Girl: ...Oh. Oh yeah, my name's...

●Team Arrives At Galbadia Garden. Rinoa States Her Relationship With Seifer, Explicitly Announcing Love
[Quistis leaves and the party waits for her in the upstairs waiting room.]
Squall: How'd it go?
Quistis: They understood our situation. And Balamb Garden is safe. The attack on the president in Timber was classified as an independant action. There was an official notice from the Galbadian government saying that Balamb Garden is not being held responsible.
Zell: So, Seifer's taking all the blame?
Quistis: The trial's over, and the sentence has been carried out...
[Everyone's taken aback.]
Rinoa: ...He was executed? ...Of course he was. He attacked the president. He sacrificed himself for the 'Forest Owls'...
Quistis: It was your group that got Seifer involved in all this. You're a resistance faction, right? You must have been prepared for the worst. I'm sure Seifer was prepared, too. So don't think of it as Seifer sacrificing himself for you. I'm sorry. I guess that wasn't much consolation.
[Squall walks over to Rinoa.]
Rinoa: I...really liked him. He was always full of confidence, smart... Just by talking to him, I felt like I could take on the world.
Selphie: Your boyfriend?
Rinoa: I don't really know. I... I think it was love. I wonder how he felt...?
Selphie: Do you still like him?
Rinoa: If I didn't, I wouldn't be talking about it. It was last summer... I was 16. Lots of fond memories...
>>
>>12142993
●Seifer Abduct President Deling
Quistis: We need to restrain him!
Squall: What do you think you're doing?
Seifer: It's obvious, ain't it!? What are you planning to do with this guy?
Squall: ...Planning to do? (That's right... He knows Rinoa. Is that why he's here?)
Zell: I get it! You're Rinoa's...
Seifer: Shut your damn mouth! Chicken-wuss!

●Edea Convinces Seifer To Be Her Knight
Woman: Don't be ashamed to ask for help. Besides, you're only a little boy.
Seifer: I'm not... Stop calling me a boy.
Woman: You don't want to be a boy anymore?
Seifer: I am not a BOY!
[Seifer lets Deling go, who promptly leaves the room.]
Woman: Come with me to a place of no return. Bid farewell to your childhood.
[Squall runs in and is paralyzed, too. Seifer disappears with the woman.]

●Seifer's Appearance
Quistis: He was so angry when he found out it was only the 3 of you dispatched to Timber. "What!? They might end up fightin' the whole Galbadian force! And all they dispatch are 3 rookie SeeD members!? Dammit! I'm going to Timber!" I never would have guessed he was serious about it.
Squall: (That guy's always serious. You should know that by now...)
Quistis: What's going to happen to Seifer?
Squall: He may already be dead.
Rinoa: How can you be so casual? I feel...sorry for him.
Squall: (...Feel sorry? Seifer would hate to hear that.)
Rinoa: What's so funny!? You're terrible! So...why do you think Seifer may already be dead?
Squall: (Because...) The president of Galbadia and the sorceress joined forces. Seifer attacked the president. It's no surprise that Seifer may have been killed because of it.
Rinoa: Even so! I still hope he's alive.
Squall: (Think what you want. ...Reality isn't so kind. Everything doesn't work out the way you want it to. That's why...) As long as you don't get your hopes up, you can take anything... You feel less pain. Anyway, whatever wish you have is none of my business.
Rinoa: ...You're mean. MEANY!!!
Squall: (What's with her...?) ...Sorry.
>>
>>12142998
●Immediately After, Rinoa Appears
Rinoa: Hey guys! Where's Seifer?
[Quistis shrugs.]
Squall: We don't know.
Rinoa: ...He'll be ok, right?

●Why Seifer, Of All People?
Selphie: I still don't get it. What did Seifer come here for?
Rinoa: I think...he came to help us, the "Forest Owls." I talked about it a lot with him. So please...don't think too badly of him.

●Post-Parade, Pre-Sniper-Assassination
Squall: Rinoa. Seifer's alive. He was in the parade with the sorceress.
Rinoa: ...What does it mean?
Squall: Who knows. (If I were to face the sorceress directly... Would I have to go through Seifer? ...That's the way it goes as a SeeD. You can't choose your enemies...) I may end up killing Seifer.
Rinoa: You're both...prepared, right? That's the kind of world you live in. You've had a lot of emotional training. But... Of course, I'd rather it not happen...

●Orphanage Revelations About Love
Quistis: Yes! That's right! Seifer was a kid who always needed to be the center of attention. But Squall always used to ignore him... But eventually they would end up fighting. Squall could have easily walked away from it, but always took up the challenge. He should've just ignored him, but Squall, almost in tears, would say... "I gotta do my best by myself. Or else I won't be able to see Sis." I guess I was trying to take Sis...I mean, Ellone's place. I tried, but to no avail... That's probably it! Even after becoming an instructor, I couldn't stop thinking about Squall. I thought it was...love. I had to hide my feelings because I was an instructor, but I've come to realize it wasn't. It was my childhood feelings as a big sister that lingered... Oh well...
[An embarrassed Quistis walks away from everyone. Squall goes over.]
Quistis: (A misunderstood love...? Actually, I had completely given up when Rinoa came into the picture.) Hey! It must be the same for Seifer! But whenever he sees Squall, his inner feelings start to boil, and...

●2nd Boss Fight With Seifer+Matron(Possessed)
Seifer: Oh, you guys shouldn't have... I was gonna come visit you at my old home.
Squall: Shut up.
Seifer: Did you guys come to fight Matron? After all she's done for us?
[Seifer converses with the other two members of the party.]
Seifer: "Selphie," right? I wish we had time to get to know each other.
Selphie: Nahh. You're not my type.
Seifer: Rinoa, what are you doing here? You're gonna fight me, too? Come on, remember a year ago we...
Rinoa: Stop it!

●Matron Boss Fight Ends, Final Scene DISC 2
[They defeat Edea afte awhile.]
Edea: A...Ahhh...
[A large stream of noxious-looking gas escapes from the defeated sorceress.]
Squall: (What happened...? My...body...)
[In the brightened area, Squall sees a trance-like Rinoa over Seifer's body.]
Squall: (Rinoa...)
[She cradles him and kisses him.]
Squall: (......! Rinoa... Seifer...)
[Seifer gets up and the brightness ends. Rinoa slumps over.]

●Ellone Sends Squall Back Via Memories, REPEAT "Final Scene DISC 2"
Squall: (Where am I...?)
Squall: (You're...)
[Rinoa's body floats over and cradles him in a trance-like state.]
Squall: (Rinoa...)
[Rinoa kisses Seifer.]
Squall: (This isn't Rinoa!)
Rinoa: Oh, my loyal knight, Seifer. The sorceress is alive... The sorceress demands.
Squall: (Ultimecia!? The future sorceress is inside Rinoa!? ...Transferred from Edea? Where's Rinoa!!!?
Rinoa: Find the legendary Lunatic Pandora, said to be hidden beneath the ocean. Only then shall the sorceress provide you with dreams again.
Squall: (Rinoa! Where are you!? Answer me!)
Seifer: As you wish, Ultimecia.

●Post 3rd Boss Fight Seifer, Final Scene DISC 3
Rinoa: "Seifer..."
[She walks away. Seifer jumps up as she leaves.]
Seifer: Not yet! It's not over yet, Squall!!!
[He runs after Rinoa. In the other room, she screams.]
Rinoa: Squall!!!
Squall: Rinoa!?
[Zell runs in.]
Zell: Squall! Seifer's got Rinoa!
Squall: Let's just go after Seifer!
[Upstairs, Seifer drags Rinoa towards Adel's Tomb.]
Rinoa: Seifer! Stop it! Haven't you done enough!? I know you're not like that!
Seifer: Can't go back now! I can't go anywhere! The sorceresses as one! That is Ultimecia's WISH!
Rinoa: ......Seifer.

●Immediately After, First Scene DISC 4
[The party runs from the site of their last battle up into the Crystal Pillar where Adel's Tomb is now located.]
Rinoa: ......Seifer. No more... Please?
Seifer: Rinoa...
[Squall runs into the room just then.]
Squall: Seifer!!! NO!
Seifer: Rinoa and Adel! The sorceresses as one! Watch closely, Squall!
[FMV. Seifer pushes Rinoa to Adel, who breaks out of her tomb grabs her.]

●FF8 Ultimania Guide "Ex-Lovers"

>Seifer and Rinoa did not engage in anything romantic, you guys.

As a pure video game, 5 and 12 are the best
They offer the most mechanical complexity with job selecting and party comps
As an experience, 7, 8, and 10 offer very strange and unique worlds with good writing
>>
>>12143605
To add to this, Tactics is probably your best bet for combining a good story with good gameplay density
You have a lot of freedom in building units, plenty of different scenarios, and arguably the most profound FF story (no surprise considering it who it was helmed by)
12 was almost there in terms of greatness with a similar team
>>
>>12143605
What didnt you like about 6s writing, just out of curiosity?
>>
>>12143631
I think it was just a first attempt at the “ensemble cast” idea that they would do better in later entries (I feel like 12 does this better).
I did like how far they took Kefka’s victory though with the destroyed world, and it was really cool playing 6 after 5 to see how randomly dark and dreary everything got.
I don’t think 6 is bad at all, but I just resonated more with 7. 8, 10, 12, and Tactics
>>
>>12143631
>>12143643
My main problem with 6s writing is that there's no build-up to the final dungeon and battle with Kefka. The vignettes idea is fine but it would have been better if there was one more main story event (and maybe dungeon/boss) before the final tower. It's missing something to generate at least SOME tension and momentum toward the ending.

Yes, it is. After the floating continent, there's a timeskip and massive pace shift to Celes. Celes' adventure in the World of Ruin is solid but narratively speaking, the pacing or tension at the point where you recover the Falcon is not "ready for the final dungeon" tier pacing. In fact, you even omitted Sabin which I believe is the only WoR event where Kefka plays a direct role in the plot (the Light of Judgement).

From what I recall, the translations from the japanese script done a decade ago did not indicate they were emotionally involved - in fact, when confronted with that thesis by Quistis, Rinoa outright denied it. A lot of Rinoa's personality in the western translation is fabricated - she is still rebelious and carefree but her attitude and behaviour is nowhere near as childish or tantrum-charged. It's one of these things that happened a lot in 90s with western translations, they just ad-libbed to fit better with western culture, sometimes it worked great (like in MGS) sometimes it did not and irritated the target audience.

Surveying a world you once knew and its absolute destruction, the way it affected mankind and the way they perservered in spite of his absolute rule WAS the tension and momentum. In case you were too addled to notice, the overall theming about the game is about a lot of topics surrounding despair and loss, with the final resolve being mankind's ability to overcome it. Also if you need more visceral buildup you fight the fucking trinity of magic as you climb his tower, and the final battle is one of the most definitive in the series by a mile. Your problem with its writing is that you can't pick up on anything other than the words staring you in the face. Shit like having two outcomes on the deserted island wasn't an accident in narrative design.

>Surveying a world you once knew and its absolute destruction, the way it affected mankind and the way they perservered in spite of his absolute rule WAS the tension and momentum.
That's not tension and momentum.
There's nothing wrong with any of that. It's fine. The "vignettes" I alluded to did a great (for a JRPG) job of conveying this.

> In case you were too addled to notice, the overall theming about the game is about a lot of topics surrounding despair and loss, with the final resolve being mankind's ability to overcome it
I'm not disputing any of the themes you dumb fuck fragile fanboy.
The World of Ruin depicts the new normal.
Yes, daily life is more of a struggle.
There's widespread despair.
None of those vignettes develop any direct tension with Kefka (except Tzen and maybe the fanatic tower). None of the vignettes have narrative momentum toward the finale. They just fucking don't. It's all about coping with post-apocalyptic survival, not about getting rid of Kefka.

>Also if you need more visceral buildup you fight the fucking trinity of magic as you climb his tower.
Yes, retard, I'm saying I wanted more build-up BEFORE THE TOWER. For example, instead of just fighting warring triad with maybe a line of battle text, include a dungeon/quest/event where a little more of the lore is uncovered. Maybe you could get hints about the strengths and weaknesses of each one.

>Your problem with its writing is that you can't pick up on anything other than the words staring you in the face.
Your problem is not knowing what words the words in your face even mean.
I understand indirect development.
I'm saying that a little more direct storytelling (just a little!) would have been better.
Because you're a sub-literate who can't read, you can't distinguish my post from "FF6 is trash" shitposters. Your feelings got hurt so you went aggro.

(PS Kefka is a shit final boss battle. It's only memorable for the art and music)
