The closest thing to a valid criticism I've ever heard is that it's too easy, but I think that can be chalked up to the fact that it's just a very well paced game that doesn't make you waste time backtracking or grinding like a lot of other RPGs especially of the time. It's still as fun and challenging as any FF game. Pretty much every aspect of it is at the very least "good" if not excellent, and I can't think of many games I can say that for, so I honestly think it's not overrated but in fact actually lives up to its reputation and it's praise is rightfully earned. If you can't enjoy CT you probably wouldn't enjoy any kind of RPG.

In fact I recently saw a video of a guy asking people at a convention their favorite videogame and at least one guy said Chrono Trigger.
