Been playing Banjo Kazooie. Such a good video game. Currently finishing up the Swamp level.
so much better than every ps1 platformer its unreal.
The swamp is objectively the worst level in the gamefuck that red alligator
>>12146112The illusion gets shattered hard by the time you're in the swamp level, the level design in almost every stage is complete and total shit
>>12146112It's great. Level design is fun varied and unique. The characters are really funny and well designed, progression is rewarding, levels are perfectly condensed with little dead space, and the controls feel pretty fluid. I have a couple issues though. The movement and abilities are very methodical, they require a lot of committed time and input so Banjo and Kazooie feel very sluggish especially compared to Mario, Spyro, or Crash. It's not as bad as Croc but damn sometimes it feels like I'm sludging through mud when playing as the bear and bird. I also don't care for the abilities being arbitrarily locked off until you reach a certain level. It doesn't cause much in terms of backtracking but I'd prefer just being able to do all my acrobatics from the start.
>>12146137nah that would be click clock wood having to traverse the same big ass tree over and over again and no note counter for each season
>>12146149crash's entire moveset is jump and spin and has no momentum whatsoever, its definitely worse
>>12146160Crash's moveset doesn't take multiple button combinations to do something as simple as a high jump. Crash may not have momentum but at least his controls are slick and easy to perform.
>>12146184youre right, not having a high jump at all is so much better.
>>12146184>slick controls
>>12146250>Me bad at game>Therefore the game controls are bad not meI hate the git gud argument but homy shit that video is just plagued with bad gameplay decisions and fuckups that are entirely on the fault of the player and not the game.
>>12146245>This game doesn't have a feature! >does the game require that feature?>No>So what's the problem>....>So what's the problem>It doesn't have the feature!I guess we should hate half life because it doesn't have rideable vehicles
>>12146257Not really man. There's only 1 or 2 of the many examples that are invalid. Crash wasn't made by platforming devs and it shows. Crash really does just ride on nostalgia, ironically that's what people accuse n64 platformer fans of.>>12146265You're too old to be this disingenuous and incapable of nuance
>>12146285Explain why the absense of a feature that is unnecessary and not designed for is a negative. It's a bigger negative for a necessary feature to require multiple button combinations and require lengthy wind up than for it to be absent and unnecessary.
>>12146112banjo tooie is even better
>>12146184Well it's literally a combo to slide jump, which is higher, but I get what you're saying in comparison to all the Z+c controls.
>>12146548>lets make this whimsical light hearted kids game edgy tryhard shit and ruin the gameplay with hours of mandatory backtrackingthe music is 10/10 at least
Level order should've gone like this. Bubblegloop is cool but it was not a good idea to put it right after CC since people are sick of the gross environments don't want another gross level this soon. The swamp contrasts VERY well with both the snow and desert places and would serve as a great balance point between them. Freeze and Gobi are obviously supposed to be opposites but honestly it's too jarring going immediately from one to the other.
>>12146297i don't know why you're acting like crouch + jump is an unwarranted and unthinkable amount of complexity my guy
>>12147623snoys have a hard time with gameplay that isnt watching a cutscene, plz understand
>>12147612personally Id put rusty bucket after click clock. its more difficult and actually a good stage. ending on click clock is going out with a whimper.
>>12146112update. i'm now on gobi's valley and missing 2 notes... I know that I can miss 18 and still get everything, but I'd like to get them all!(No it's not the ones in the snake charmer's room I'm pretty sure.)
>>12146257That gif is bad but dpad controls on a 3d platformer is such a terrible idea.
>>12147623The high jump requires a significant wind up time to complete. It feels sluggish when something that simple can be completed in Mario 64 in less steps and in far faster succession.
>>12146137I like the swamp cuz it has no skybox, feels weird n cozy. Maybe I'm just Shrek irl.
wonder why this game has no received a legit pc port like ocarina and mario 64. there must be a demand for it and the decomp is done.
Eekum Bookum, just saying.
>>12146112I fucking despise how slow this game moves Coming from Mario 64, crash 2 or even spyro to banjo is like slamming the brakes. Almost gives me nausea
>>12147836>(No it's not the ones in the snake charmer's room I'm pretty sure.)Damn I was gonna say that cuz those are the 2 Notes literally everyone always misses. If it's not the charmer then these are the only clusters of 2 Notes I can conceivably see someone missing.
>>12146112>>12146129samefag brandslop thread
>>12148618Mario ran so Banjo could walk
>>12148618that's fair
>>12148717yeah I remembered those two notes from my last unfinished playthrough and made it a point to get them.
>>12146149>Spyro or Crash>goodYikes
>>12148913shockingly some of us on this website aren't contrarian
>>12146149Crash isn't even in the same genre
>>12148717they were in jinxy behind the camera. thanks anon
>>12149403update: got the foot race jiggy from freezeasy peak first try. was expecting that to take way longer...
>>12149421Wasn't there 2 jiggies like that though?
>>12149427one's a sled race as the walrus, the second one is a harder foot race that needs the speed shoes
>>12146137You just have to return to the level after you get the running shoes in the desert. Then the red gator minigame is very easy.
Having the notes come back despite being a recorded collectable is retarded game design.
>>12149964I thought that too until I played tooie and I actually missed the system. if notes dont respawn theres no punishment for dying at all.
>>12150013It's punishment enough to slog through the game
>>12149964hardware limitation.
>>12149964Nah, it makes the game much better. Dumb dumbs never complain about coins in Mario resetting every time you gotta collect 100 for a star, but think Banjo not saving the notes is some kind of "technical limitation"God it'd fucking suck to have to floss the entire level for 1 note you missed in some kind of trail, before dying, and having to scour an empty level with zero leads just because casuals can't cope with a small interesting gauntlet of actual collect-a-thon skill.
>>12150067Nah skill issue
>>12150406>>12150013>>12149964I've thought about this before and I think I know exactly how to handle it if they ever do a new game. Just make it so the Note count and your High Score of Notes are separate concepts. You don't lose Notes when you die, but it does break your High Score.Getting Notes is for progression, but if you consistently also get a good High Score for Notes you start unlocking extra bonus shit. Fully optional for players who want to take on a little extra challenge. If you repeatedly ace the levels without dying you start getting access to areas of the game early, late game moves early, and whatever optional small bullshit. This makes it so casual players can have an easy time but if you consistently play good you have more options available to you, cuz you've proven yourself to be more capable.
>>12149421update: beat mad monster mansion and got the extra honeycomb piece I was missing from clanker's cavern.
Why is does Banjo-Kazooie hold up way better than the vast majority of games released this year? Not gonna pretend BK is perfect or reinventing the industry or whatever but it's just consistently high-quality the entire fucking game. Why don't many modern games have the same spark?
