To answer the question instead of seething about cross-board bullshit or gen wars, I prefer Crystal because the engine feels faster and I like the chiptune music better. Crystal also walks the fine line between bonding the player with a legendary (Suicune) without making the entire plot about that (Gen 3 onwards), and while the remake mostly respects that, it does turn you into the chosen one. The redesigns for the characters also tend to be, for the lack of a better term, atrocious.
That said the remake is great for what it is, it does have more to do, and it all boils down to preference in visuals and style. Since you're on /vr/, I think you might prefer Crystal by default because it is simpler and more retro.

oh, did we reach the bump limit already? noice. frankly, the more i read the autistic ramblings in these threads the more i want to do a gen2-only pokemon run and wish i didn't spend time switch-training poliwag and zubat. at least i'm still in early game.

It's very much a unique experience to play Gens 1 and 2 on physical copies with Stadium as opposed to playing their remakes. Stadium is vastly underrated. Personally, I think gathering some of your mates and doing a casual playthrough of the Gen 1+2 games together, working to complete the pokedex and such over a weekend and making full use of trading and shit is a load of fun. You can't do that with the other gens.
