>Try to keep things /vr/ related: Focus should be on 6th Gen Consoles and older. Slight off topic is fine so long as it's related to CRTs, such as later 16:9 models, HD models, etc. Systems with backwards compatibility are also safe territory, as are re-releases on newer hardware. PC CRTs are also welcome and appreciated.
>Produce OC! Bust out your camera and take photos of your CRTs displaying all sorts of games, featuring all sorts of tubes, using all sorts of signals. Getting good shots can be hard, but if you take enough, at least a few will turn out alright.
>Try and give as much information as possible when asking for info on a specific set, or troubleshooting an issue to expedite and help you may receive. As always, Google is your friend and we are your friends with benefits. Do people read this? Older archived threads aren't a bad place to look either; Seriously, there's literally 6 years of backlog at this point.
>Share appreciation for others choice of technology and personal philosophy of gaming. Always remember to show courtesy in your discussion and moderate yourselves first.

Limited discussion of video processing and scaling devices is alright, but remember to keep the focus on CRTs and CRT accessories.

I got a 32 inch one of these yesterday (not my image), first decent crt for me. Can't really find much online about it, are they known to be good or shit? It's a KV-32LS36U
>>
anyone have a pc to tv setup that'd be willing to test the tv's range of horizontal frequencies (at 60Hz vertical)? obviously 15.7kHz is gonna work, but how far can you go? 17kHz? 12kHz? what's the range?
>>
>>12147416
Low persistence PC CRTs are not worth the eyestrain, especially for RTS

i mostly played Brood War on mom's 1024 x 768 LCD anyway

What game are you playing? Looks like Pipe Through The Window (DOS version).

I have a vcr crt tv with sonic mega collection on gamecube hooked up via av cable but still get split lines near the waterfall. Theres no blending. If I get a converter, will it finally blend? I also have Sonic 2 on Sega Genesis but no console. If I get an av to rf converter, will the waterfall blend correctly? What would it be? Because right now, I get split lines, the waterfall is too clear, and I'd like to get either rf or composite quality.
>>
>>12148539
I'm guessing the issue with the mega collection is that it runs in 480i so the scaling is messing up the blending trick for the waterfall. Using your actual genesis should do the trick with either AV/composite or RF
>>
>>12148559
oh I misread your comment. You don't have a genesis. But I think that mega collection is the issue still. The waterfall blends fine on composite/AV cables. You don't need to step down to RF.

Been enjoying this streetside find quite a bit. It's not perfect but hey, free's free, and in my area people are trying to charge $200 for dilapidated pieces of shit.
It has a few tiny scratches near the center that become visible when the screen is bright. Is there anything I can use to fill those scratches in?
>>
how do you guys deal with the ear piercing coil whine of TV CRTs? Computer monitor CRTs are so much better as long as you don't overclock them.
>>
>>12148617
Just turn up the game music, ez
>>
>>12148539
Why are people so obsessed with Sonic waterfalls? You see them for an entire second during your playthrough of the game.
>>
>>12148642
nope still hear it
>>
>>12148645
I think the point is it's used as a benchmark, if it looks "right" then everything else will.
Tbf I don't care about it either, I think it looks fine without a filter, but it's the most obvious example I'm aware of of a screen/shader dependent visual effect in a very common and popular game that's also very quick and easy to test and is very noticeably affected by the type of screen it's displayed on, so it's not surprising it's used for testing and demonstration purposes so often
>>
>>12148617
what do you mean deal with it? it's just a little noise that doesn't hurt anything.
>>
>>12148998
hurts my ears and drives me crazy, I already have tinitus and makes my tinitus worse.
>>
>>12149003
You have to quit being a little bitch. Only solution.
>>
>>12149005
or I can use a computer CRT which does the same thing as a TV without the coil whine which I am doing
>>
>>12149014
Sounds like you are choosing to be a bitch and giving up to me.

>>12149016
sounds like you're low IQ.

wtf was composite really that shitty? I had composite as a kid and remember it looking fine

You can just use headphones. I don't hear any whine when wearing them >>12148642

People complaining about coil whine n shit are literally zoomers

i do, i don't blast music in my ears because of my tinitus.

oh shit I forgot about that
i remember the relief of when I upgraded to an LCD
>>

uhhh wtf are you talking about? I avoid the TVs because of my tinitus, same thing that people with epilepsy would avoid flashing lights. You're fucking retarded.

do you like drone music

So why are you here bitching about the fact you are brain damaged?

Also cause I have a fucking Computer CRT which counts as a CRT and I've already said that I had one but again low IQ retards assuming shit.

Curious about what? All you did was bitch about being unable to handle a little noise
>>
>>12149226
>>12148617
literally was my question and I exaplined that I use my computer CRT, and then I was basically attacked called a bitch and a zoomer cause I can't handle coil whine, but sure i'm the one bitching.

>>12148574
Lovely. At first glance looked like a Thomson set that I had a few years back. Looks like 27 or 29 inch. The picture looks like it has decent contrast and colors. I love these shadow mask consumer crt, specially with speakers in the bottom and not the sides. Can't really get much better than this IMO.

About the scratches I've seen people using a drill in a very low setting with a sponge and some kind of product? I don't know, I have some scratches in a few of my sets but I just live with them, they don't bother me while playing.
>>
>>12149229
Cry more zoomie. No one cares about the sound
>>
What's the smallest size you can go while having it still be legible and not squinting?
>>
>>12150061
depends solely on distance (and of course the input resolution) but 13" for desk (2' away), 20" for bedroom (4' away), 27" for living room (6' away)

5" might be too small (for color) depending on text size. it's easier to read in person but not perfect. 13" will surely do it, but 9" might work if you're really close.

composite blending together adjacent columns of pixels was a quirk of the shitty video encoder used in the genesis, not a quirk of composite in general. other consoles won't produce the same image, even at 240p.

If anyone here wants to learn more about CRT TV's and how to diagnose and fix them then go watch Shango66 on Youtube. Posting here because I enjoy his videos but they are very long form videos though so buckle in.

the waterfall blends when I use composite output on my wii and genesis plus GX. I don't think it's unique to the genesis encoder

how do I get WoW to display properly on my CRT? the text keeps on flickering and i have it set to the correct resolution and playing an old client Chromiecraft to be exact.
>>
>>12151391
Are you using a CRT monitor? It should just werk then. WoW just wasn't meant to be displayed on a CRT TV at 480i
>>
>>12151647
yea its a CRT monitor but the text keeps on like having weird things happening to it, like if you were drunk and trying to read it.
>>
>>12151680
Weird. I played classic WoW on a CRT and it just worked with no fucking around. Are you using a pretty standard resolution? stuff like 640x480, 800x600, 1024x768, 1600x1200.

Try restarting your graphics driver (ctrl shift windows key B) and maybe mess with the DPI scaling settings on WoW

i realize the picture looks kind of normal but i promise you theres like some fuckery going on thats making it like move back and forth if i had a way to get a video of it i would but it mainly only happens when im moving so kinda hard to move and hold my phone at the same time.
>>
>>12151789
Maybe it's CRT blooming?
>>
>>12152060
nah cause WoW is the only game its having issues with.
>>
>>12152130
text makes stuff like the CRT bloom really apparent. Try turning down contrast and brightness each and see if either helps

There is absolutely no way you can hear crt whine over game music. Turn volume up higher than 3.
If anything, it is a nice indicator that you forgot to turn it off.

I assume this is not on the CRT in itself, but I'd appreciate any help.
So I had my CRT fully off for a while, but my consoles still plugged in, and some days ago we had some power issues and I only found out after the fact the socket I have them on was affected.
My deep retardation aside, I went to check if my shit is in working order and everything seems mostly fine, but trying my Mega Drive with its RGB cable it would have a persistent louder sound (not just your typical slight noise and not sure I can call it a hum, even if I could get it just a bit quieter but not much) and the image had a scanning look, almost seemed like something was out of sync (the quality was otherwise sharp). Granted, the RGB slot on my TV isn't perfect but every other console still seems to work like before with regards to video, that said I'm pretty sure this RGB cable also worked just fine the last time I tested it 1-2 years ago. Could the cable somehow have gone to shit, do I need to mess around with it a bit more and see if it might somehow be a bad contact, or has the console sustained damage? I have a finicky RGB cable for my PS2 as well but that's never given me this sort of issues (then again I don't remember the Mega Drive having done so either). I tried checking the RF output but couldn't really get the TV to find it.

Perhaps in summary can an RGB bad contact give you loud noise and a "scanning" image, or is it the cable, the TV's RGB slot or the device at fault?
>>
>>12152752
I would buy one of those cheap $2-$5 crappy RGB cables of aliexpress to test it with. They have audio buzz but should still be to figure out whether it's your console or cable that way. I really doubt it's the TV if RGB is working fine with everything else.
>>
>>12152440
tried that, made 0 difference.
>>
>>12153201
Try uninstalling WoW and playing a better game. only trick I have left.
>>
>>12150596
I concur. I used retroarch on my wii u over 480i composite and saw the rainbows just fine
