Do MUDs count? I went through a period of being addicted to dragonrealms before I realized nobody is actually playing the game just botting.

On that thought two early ones that spring to mind were shades and much later AOL UKs Legends of Terris. Shades is a very intersting part of early retro history as up until that point MUDs had largely been restricted to University networks and it was on British telecoms micronet service, no IP stack working as BBS muds but on a much larger scale and in that era much slower with connection rates like 1200/75

I used to play a MUD years ago and I fell in love with it. The truth is that I was not in a good place in my life and mentally and so I ignored what was happening in my life by playing this game. There were no maps for this game so I decided to take it upon myself to create all of the maps for the largest regions. This is one of the many maps I made. Each region has over 6500 rooms (81x81) and I made 15 different regions just like this one. I actually created more than just 15 maps so in total I single-handedly mapped out over 100,000 rooms. I treated it as a kind of coloring book.

Technically there are rooms above and below (air, water, solid rock, etc.) so there are actually over 65,000 rooms per region. You can enter these rooms if you have the ability to fly or have intangibility.

I am in a better place in my life now.
