Did anyone else play the retro TF games? (Quake TF, Team Fortress Classic, Unreal Fortress, Quake 3 Fortress, Fortress Forever, etc.)
>>
I am a veteran of the 2fort wars.
>>
https://youtu.be/asgtIKR3CeA
>>
I can't go back after TF2.
>>
I loved this game when it was new, but the imbalanced characters always annoyed me. Soldier is a better Pyro and Medic is a better Scout.
>>
>>12153224
Tf2 is retro old man
>>
>>12153224
For me it's ETF
>>
>>12153591
Vanilla TF2 maybe but Live TF2 lolno
>>
>>12153624
based
>>
TFC must've been really fun when it came out and everyone was playing it, heard it had been pretty popular for like a year before CS came out. But I'm a filthy secondary who played TF2 first. Pre-Polycount/trade update TF2 was great though. Also the time when /v/ wasn't a complete shithole, there were party vans and shit and they also made a popular map called mario_kart. There was also that cyberpunk map with Jet Set Radio vibes and iirc it's also made by /v/
>>
>>12153591
Technically but people seem to treat it like an honorary NOT RETRO game. I blame how it made the F2P+microtransaction structure popular outside Korea in 2010.
>>
>>12154346
mario_kart is a fucking classic and seeing less and less servers with it is heartbreaking.
>>
>>12153224
>Unreal Fortress
Seems legit
>>
>>12153591
It plays like modern slop so it's not retro you dumb drooling little cunt. TF2 feels way more like Fortnite than Quake 3.
>>
>>12155086
> TF2 feels way more like Fortnite than Quake 3.
Lmao that's a complete fucking lie, TF2 stands out among other non-/vr/ or barely /vr/ games precisely because it plays like an arena shooter
>>
>>12154346
Play pre-fortress 2
>>
I bought this game AFTER tf2 had already been out because my computer was shit.

literally had zero players
feels bad man
At least I had Gang Garrison 2 for a bit and even made it into a jerma video on accident with it before I even knew who he was
>>
>>12153224
Played a boatload of TFC in the early 2000s. Favorite thing about it was NeoTF, an expansion mod that added abilities for each class. I can only remember two.

Spy could call an airstrike with a volley of missiles coming from any sky brush he points and presses the corresponding ability key. I used to call them down on the enemy base's entrance on the well map.

Engineer's was the best, but then again I was a kid and I don't remember the rest. He could build a transparent HL1 turret that would get different attacks and / or models depending on the ally class who touches it. For instance, if an engineer put down this HL1 turret, and an ally spy touched it, it would transform into a three sphered tesla coil turret that zaps enemies for high damage when they get close enough. You had to hide it around corners and whatnot. If a medic touched it, a skull gib would float above the HL1 turret, and it would fire projectile gib skulls rapid fire at the enemy team when sighted.

That's all I can remember. Lots of fun playing it. Good times, being young and having no responsibilities.
>>
>>12153224
I played Q3F briefly. It and Reaction Quake 3 were really fun, but they didn't take off with the original communities and died pretty fast.
>>
>>12153224
I played a pretty good amount of TFC from about 2002 to 2004. I liked it quite a bit, the nine classes felt unique, maps had a lot of variety, you'd get a nice balance of fighting vs objective gameplay.

What killed the game for me was when competitive play got bigger and bigger. I think TFC suffered from a major problem with balance but also an oppressive design with grenades being such a big deal and extreme mobility for every class which resulted in a game that was nearly unplayable when fighting someone who was just elite at it. As the population dwindled and all that remained were hardcore players, a lot of mechanics and classes were sidelined and the same few started to dominate the game and overshadow everything else.

I think a good example of the differences in the game was just how 2fort operated early in TFC's life vs much later on. I remember playing on a public server where people were pushing in to blue's base, would grab the flag and move it ten steps before dying, only to respawn and try to push in again and move it another ten down the road. Spies would take the long route in through the sewers, engineers would construct sentries on turns, it was a slower pace for the objectives although the action was still really frantic.

Later on, you'd see scouts who would spawn, conc jump from the battlements on their side to the enemy, drop down the elevator to the flag, conc jump back up the elevator, then fly across the enemy battlements to score before picking up another set of grenades and doing it all again. It took like 20 seconds of swift motion to score a point and most of the enemy team would simply fumble around vaguely aware of what even happened and be completely unable to formulate a counter to it all. Not to mention snipers who'd headshot people so quickly no one know if they were bots.
>>
/vr/ TFC game night when? The latest half life 1 update lets you host using steam networking

I love TFC, just hooked into it recently, It's really fun and addictive, the action is constant, A/D in TFC is more fun than in TF2, you are defending, kill one guy, and that guy immediately comes back again to capture the point
>>
>>12158378
>wants to play games with the likes of "Sega System"
>>
>>12157181
So like Fortress Forever?
>>
*bunny hops the entire time* and it's not personal
>>
I like hwguy more than heavy.
>>
Conc jumps are bullshit. At least with grenade/rocket jumps you have to take damage to be pushed to your destination. Concs just make you woozy for a second, and some cheaters had macros that could move the mouse in a pattern to eliminate even that.

Also, I am bad at them
>>
>>12153224
>tfw Fortress Forever just got buried by TF2
>>
>>12160426
I didn't knew that, even though, when you are conced you can still maintain speed by bhopping, as long you hit the right timing, it's all good

I can bhop consistently, no scripts and no mousewheel trick, just spacebar timing, the only script i can accept is the lagless client-side grenade script, because getting those grenade jumps or controlling space with grenades can get a bit finicky with high ping
>>
EXCUSE ME, I'M IN NEED OF MEDICAL ATTENTION
>>
>>12160797
it's a shame because FF has a lot of real classic TF stuff that TF2 lacks
>>
I have only about 30 hours in TFC since I first picked up the game waaaay late into its life and long after TF2's peak popularity.
but I do like watching this guy's tfc videos
https://www.youtube.com/@NeonLight_TFC/videos
>>
>>12153224
I played all the Quake-based ones when they were new
This includes TFC and TF2 and the one week where Fortress Forever was out but TF2 wasn’t
And the one Quake 2 TF thing with the medic chick
>>
>>12157181
Q3F did decently well, but suffered from ADHD of the audience wanting to move on newer engines, like Enemy Territory Fortress and then Doom 3 Fortress, which was never finished with the development shifting to Quake 4 Fortress, which was promising but left unfinished.
>>
>>12155086
Absolutely insane opinion
>>
>>12153224
Anyone here old enough to remember QWTF? I really miss that 1996 to 2001 era of frag fests. Now the kids demand a battle pass or vbucks just to keep them playing.
Shit, THE GAME was enough to keep us playing, not some shitty skin treadmill when we had skins FOR FREE!
>>
>>12163417
>medic healing axe
Yes
>>
/vr/ Fortress when?
>>
>>12153328
I still call them 2fort5 and wall6 lmao
>>
>>12155086
>quake based engine feels like fortnite
>>
>>12163417
What's better for QWTF on modern machines, should I download FortressOne or should I get a Quake engine (like FTE or DarkPlaces) and the original TF mod?
>>
>>12162226
awesome stuff anon
>>
>>12153224
Sort of, my internet was bad but I enjoyed messing around with bots
>>
>>12164554
I also really liked the vods from the FortressOne guys
https://www.youtube.com/@FortressOne/videos
too bad they stopped uploading a while back. Guess they weren't getting enough views or something.
This guy specifically is a really amazing demo and I'm a big fan of how QWTF/TFC/FF/FO Demoman plays (he's my second most played class in TF2).
>>
>>12153224
so OP you setting up a server on TFC or something for the oldfags to play and newfags like me can get fucking schooled?
>>
>>12153374
ARE YOU GOING COCK SUCKING?
>>
>>12157163
>Look at the server browser
>No NeoTF servers in 2025
Sad
>>
>>12153591
Pootis pow haha!
Edit: Thanks for the gold, kind stranger!
>>
>>12163714
with famous quake features like 17 second respawn times, walking speed cap for airstrafing, random critical hits and all manner of instakill faggottry and unpredictable design bloat
>>
>>12163714
TF2 creators somehow managed to achieve this abomination, yes.
>>
maybe i should try playing fortnite if the mechanics are as good as you say
>>
>>12153591
After playing tfc for a long time going to tf2, Tf2 is infinitely superior with no grenade spam. That shit should've stayed in quake
>>
>>12165675
skill issue
>>
>>12164616
>too bad they stopped uploading a while back. Guess they weren't getting enough views or something.
What a shame, older 'fortress games deserve a lot more love, especially with the anniversaries of Quake and TF coming up in 2026 and TF2 in 2027 people should really know that there is so much more to Team Fortress than just TF2
>>
>>12167102
i'm neurologically retarded and cannot play a pvp fps more demanding than splatoon sorry
>>
>>12153224
yeah i used to play on the SAINTS OF MURDER clan server with NICK VIPER and EKILLER and i loved sneaking into the enemy base on well as a demoman, putting proximity bombs on the elevators leading to the top, then dropping a detpack down the big hole into the main base area.
>>
>>12167109
lol
>>
>>12153224
Sorry, I prefer Threewave CTF.
>>
>>12160426
im autistically good at conc jump maps. Its the only gamong related thing ive ever been good at. Dizzy shit needs disabling with addons though.
>>
>>12167109
Splatoon is pretty good, though. You can’t flake out in 4v4 like you can on 24v24 or 50v50. If you’re a boat anchor in Splatoon, your team WILL lose.

It's still kicking broder! Drippy's 24/7 2fort server is still active somehow, there is a server named 1999TFC that has regulars and there is custom maps as well, there is a also NeoTF server revival going on just recently
>>12164616
For QWTF, there is a another successor of FortressOne, named QWTF.live or something like that, they managed to get Anti-lag from Quakeworld working, meaning SA, Oceania and Asia players can play with European and NA servers with 100 ping! kind of cool, they are organizing games on Discord though, gotta play there one day

Also worth nothing, if you want to play vanilla QWTF, there is a russian pub server which has players each morning or night on your timezone
>>
>>12171056
is does live have a custom client like FortressOne or is it just a mod?
>>
>>12171056
Hey! Thanks for that, I just played a little bit of it might hop onto that 1999TFC serb sometime this weekend.
>NeoTF
What's that?
To be clear, I'm a total newfag to this but love the Aesthetic of both TF2 and TFC, but I like the darker aesthetic of TFC a lot more, makes me feel like a nameless, disposable Henchman.
>>
>>12171694
QWTF live uses FortressOne AFAIK
https://qwtf.org/#qwtf-downloads
>>12171835
It's a mod for TFC, basically adds new stuff, it's pretty fun, you can call down airstrikes for example, it is quite chaotic and messy fun
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KUC_RJKIr_A
the NeoTF revival server is just getting started and it's on work in progress, i haven't seen many players there, I also saw another server named OST team fortress where it had a full lobby game of A/D tonight, you can check them out as well
>>
>>12153224
In cyber cafes when we got bored of CS we played TFC but changed the map to hl crossfire in console just for fun
>>
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qMBg7ynb18I
>>
What's the best TFC map and why is it Avanti?
>>

Why is his nose microscopic? He looks like a ghoul from Fallout games.

>>
>>12170579
TFC sometimes has a server or two active.
Fortress Forever has jack shit.
>>
>>12175602
For real, and it's disappointing, is there enough interest? It seems like the devs really did put their all into FF.
And I found out about it, maybe.. Two years ago? Finding out it came out JUST before TF2 and was forgotten is sad.
>>
>>12175602
There is supposedly a organized pub game every saturday, i played a bit of FF the other day and im suprised how well the netcode played, it felt more smoother than TF2.

Most people playing FF are people playing 2v2 pickup games
>>
>>12157163
>>12165048
Anyone remember EternalHowls server called 'Ultimate NeoTF FunHouse'? That shit was my go to server
used to play with a guy called RedButton and FatManMichael in that server alot

>>12173154
I love TFC Well for no good reason, i just have good memories of playing it when i was 10 years old
>>
>>12155086
tfw was a good game until they made it free/casual/gay with hats
many such cases
>>
>>12153224
Anyone here play Fortress Forever?
>>
>>12173154
pipejump2001
>>
>>12176319
Sadly no because there's almost never people playing it, it's frustrating
Semi-related, something I really appreciate about FF is the fact that it even has a tutorial for newfags to learn the classic mechanics like conc jumps, bhops, rocket jumping and whatnot, and the best part about that is that they apply to the other games like Quake Fortress and TFC
>>12176260
You should try TF2 classic, TF2 vintage or Pre-Fortress 2
>>
>>12176843
>>12176319
I'd be willing to hop on if we set up a proper time and date, maybe wrangle up enough interest? Even if it's once.

>>
>>12180796
boa wouldn't have been anything like qwtf's derivatives and enemy territory resembles what we know of boa most with all of the design bloat cut out (gutting commander, condensing duplicate classes into weapon options and having vehicle convoys as objectives)

Without scramble and persistent servers 95% of matches end up as steamrolls where everyone leaves near the end anyway. Casual matchmaking killed TF2 and the community drives the direction of the game. Just look at all the balancing changes. Or maybe I'm just too burnt out of TF2 and want to find something similar to it.
>>12182692
I highly doubt that.
>>
>>12183637
what balancing changes? they haven't changed shit in years in except that now you can finally pyroshark with the gas passer (it's still the worst weapon in the game).
>>
>>12183637
There were more than a few furries in the TFC community. There was a server called Yiffy Foxes that was constantly packed around the clock. Pretty sure they also had a CS server under the same name. It sticks in my head because I always had good pings on both but knew better than to play with those degenerates.
Avatar-X was also a notorious furfag who routinely had meltdowns and unironically ranted about mundanes and fursecution. He packed the admin team on the Sillyzone with his furfag pals and none of them would shit the fuck up about their fetishes. I'm pretty sure it was all that shit that led to Invictus and BillDoor walking away and the eventual death of the server. But my memories of 25 year old vidya drama are a little fuzzy.
>>
Does anyone know how to connect the old Sierra CD version of TFC to the internet? I tried installing it on an old machine that no longer supports Steam but it won't detect nor connect to game servers
