Did you really think just posting a few Doom challenges after the last attempt to shill this would make it seem more organic?

>SUB MORTEM : A Dead Simple Halloween Project
On the verge of done, only needs tiny tweaks.

>CURRENT BETA:
https://files.catbox.moe/ytur3g.zip

>iWAD: Doom 2
>Map Format: MBF21
>Number of levels: 12

Updates done:
>last update of Bereaved Battlement
>made the Yellow Skull switches in The Whine Cellar more obvious
>added level titlepics
>made episodic title pics (hopefully doesn't look too much like a ransom letter)
>Into King Boner's Manor Of Teleporting Goblin-y Spooks has the variant green sky like asked for

Bugs that need fixing:
>Yellow Skull Key fight in Caligary's Delight does not trigger anymore and softlocks you (haven't looked at why)
>Hell Knight that cockblocks the lift in Concussion sometimes does not teleport in, meaning you can't max kills

Do give input on level order, if you think it should be shifted or not. I sorta went by a mix of aesthetic themes and difficulty, putting the hard maps by the end. If you think your level should have another sky, chime in with that.

Imp. I love these underrated guys so much. They're not difficult but a swarm of them with a big gin is always a lot of fun to deal with

Pain Elemental. The "that guy" of Doom. My day is slightly ruined every time I see one of these unfun Lost Soul generators. They aren't even satisfying to kill, and yeah you can get in their face to shut down the Lost Soul stream but it's not always possible.

No Doom challenge for this thread, it seems. For those unaware, you can record Heretic demos using chocolate-heretic, crispy-heretic, or dsda-doom. Surprisingly, I planned on making a Heretic challenge before anyone mentioned the Quake challenge, just to mix things up. Trying to screen-record a new program finally motivated me to try a new method for making images. Exporting a webm instead of a gif should result in higher quality/framerate with comparable filesize

Depends on enemies they respawn. If you have custom archvile that just spawns imps/pinkies then it's not so much of an issue when compared to normal archvile reviving doors with hit points combined with the LoS attack

On the topic of enemies that can resurrect, I had a fun idea for a small monster that has no collision that you could spawn swarms of, and resurrects 1 monster before disappearing. Give them extremely low health, too.

That will make enemies move away from the player, and it's a classic DeHacked trick, the cat in Aliens TC is actually the Yellow Key with negative speed set to it so that it runs away from the player, and you have to catch it.

Funny, these are both of mine, with The Wind Tunnels and The Chambers of Torment running close behind.

There's wrong with episodes 1 and 2, but I wanted to exclude them because I feel like it's with episodes 3 and 4 where the team really understood what they could do. That makes sense of course, more time to have become familiar with the tools, with the monsters, with the rhythms of combat. But The Pain Maze and Azure Agony in particular are exemplary of a "playfulness" that Doom 2 evokes throughout its entire run. They are absolute torture to play in co-op, but otherwise very nice choices lads. Thanks for engaging me in good faith.

Scary? No. Insulting? Absolutely. The QUAKE challenge isn't actually QUAKE. Notice you don't have anyfuckingthing to say about that, because you understand how monumentally retarded it is to have the QUAKE challenge feature Librequake.

I once again invite you to engage my reply here >>12169151 with your own original thoughts on level design, Doom 2 as it compares to Quake, or anything else productive on your mind instead of presiding with your holier than thou horseshit. We both know you don't want to do that. You just want to enable this bullshit, this tumor that's now made itself known. You don't give a fuck about Quake. He CHOSE to use LIBREQUAKE instead of QUAKE as the challenge. I would hope the capitalized words would allow you to read clearly. Finished episode 1 of Soul of Evil. Its fourth map, The Autumn Citadel, is pure Quake goodness. The highlight for sure.

What isn't a highlight is its final confrontation. The mapset released 18 years later, Ter Shibboleth under Drake mod by ORL, saw inclusion of the same boss enemy as the boss of Soul of Evil episode 1, the Bane. In that Ter Shibboleth fight, you have allies, you have a ton of armor, ammo, powerups, and health. Bane also has more gimmicks in that later fight, owing to Drake becoming more advanced with time and effort, so all the extra support is needed. But this earlier, 2002 rendition of Bane under Tronyn, it needed more testing. I'm very certain the idea is, as you face him atop his tower, you are supposed to be knocked off by a gust of wind (a trigger_push), and Bane is supposed to either get caught in the wind as well, or failing that, do a jump attack after you. Both events often fail, leading you to just go back up the elevator to keep attacking him. But on Nightmare and Hard, this is a fruitless endeavor. There isn't enough range to use your grenade launcher up there, which you need to use to kill him because there isn't enough ammo in the map for your shotgun or super nailgun. I only figured out he's supposed to fall because I kept loading and trying different tactics, whereas the average player would rightfully dismiss the fight as poorly constructed. Which, unfortunately, it is if the Bane doesn't fall down to the larger area below.

I know the longstanding joke or rather rule is that early FPS can't do boss fights correctly, but in this case it's just a matter of not having been tested or designed better. What about a trigger_monsterjump set to a delay, and fired by a trigger_once after entering the Bane's tower arena? After 20 seconds, the monsterjump triggers, and Bane "jumps" down into the larger arena below. But that doesn't happen. It's all luck to get him down there.

cont.

I've gone on at length because I've looked around, and nobody has talked about what's wrong with this fight, probably because most people play it on Normal. Maybe they're sane and I'm not. It's a rather disappointing capstone to a more than solid episode of medieval Quake goodness. It's no doubt something Tronyn would have revisited had he not passed before Mjolnir was completed :(

Onto episode 2 (maybe later).

I haven't seen much discussion for it here, so maybe you're talking about what's been posted on other places like Quaddicted?
It wasn't the best final fight but I was lenient towards it considering the mod's age. It was otherwise a fun mod throughout, and at least had a final fight that was still more engaging than vanilla's Shub or Cthon.
>>
People do a lot of magicry with ZScript. Is there a mod which will attempt to equalize the volume for different music tracks? Or is that not really possible to do?
>>
>>12169485
Always thought the original movie would be perfect for a Quake clone while the series would be great for a Ghost Recon 1 style big map tactical-ish shooter kind of thing.

>>12169489
>>12169491
I think most classic FPS boss fights struggled due to lack of pathfinding. If the boss can't get around well enough, then you either have to make the arena really simple so you can't cheese him, or give him some dumb gimmick that often doesn't end up very fun.
I noticed when I played the Quake 2 re-release that it was much harder to cheese tougher enemies with map geometry. I only realized much later that they use the new deathmatch bot nodes for pathfinding.
>>
>>12169496
>so maybe you're talking about what's been posted on other places like Quaddicted?
Indeed.
>It wasn't the best final fight but I was lenient towards it considering the mod's age
I want to be more lenient, but I imagine trigger_monsterjump was a known quantity to Tronyn. It's a nice setpiece, but the fight could have been nicer.
>fun mod throughout
Oh indeed. Soul of Evil is as I said, more than solid medieval Quake goodness. Utterly charming stuff. I haven't finished episode 2 yet so I'll look out for that final fight being more engaging than Shubby or Cthon.
>>12169503
For the Bane, it's definitely just a matter of getting him down to the larger space. You can outrun him and grenade launcher him to death down there, which is the intended way of killing him for sure. Although those deathmatch bot nodes sound like they would have been useful in some capacity. Maybe getting him to reliably get trigger_pushed off his tower.
>>
>>12169501
Can't you just do that in Audacity?
>>
The fact that Quake will buffer held jumps means that sourceports should just have a "Hold Space to Autohop" option. At this point there's little meaningful reason not to offer it.
>>
>>12169506
Audacity doesn't read MIDI files to my knowledge.
>>
>>12169507
You could do that pretty trivially with an external tool if you wanted, I use X-Mouse Button Control for similar stuff. However, using auto-repeating functions that weren't present in the original game have historically been considered cheating (like for games with different bunnyhopping physics than quake, or trubo fire for certain nes games), so I think it's unlikely source port devs would implement it directly.

Only d2twid style wad I can think of is Doom 2 In Spain Only.
>>
>>12170045
I think their style is pretty far-reaching, but splitting wads into aesthetically unique episodes and arranging them from easiest to hardest is just a slight extension from what Doom 1 offered.

I think the point is Doomworld (and other people, but DW is where the shit happens) focuses far too much on everything made with Doom needing to play like Doom. The wad that caused this was a total conversion and you had to find and destroy all statues...so you know.

Like killing all the Keens in map 32 to exit.
>>

It's not like Keen maps are even an unknown thing to Doomworld, they pop up fairly often in wads like Paint-It Doom, it was just presented in a way that they couldn't immediately recognize as Doomlike so they went on the attack.

It's funny how it was getting praised here for coming across quite differently to the usual stuff you see coming out while over there it seemed to be hated for it.

Isn't it doing it in the same way as FreeDoom does, so it's only at best situationally? Even if it does do that, it's not like it'll ever actually replace the original Quake, that's a preposterous notion, it's the same for if FreeDoom actually got its shit together and turned good, it's NEVER going to functionally replace the classic.

Further, FreeDoom gets points knocked off, because its Doom 1 E4 is good, BUT, that's because they're just borrowing Double Impact, so yeah, of course FreeDoom gets good sometimes when you just slap in some of the best pre-existing maps in there, rather than making new maps which stand to that quality.
Does LibreQuake do this, or are all the maps original?

My biggest inspiration is the music I listen too, as I find it videogamey enough that can put it into maps I work on and design those maps around the music. That train map I worked on, I built it around the music track that plays in it to catch similar feel:
https://youtu.be/6wmZ9I0d-1I
Then when I got general idea of the map I look into other games and maps with similar theme. Again my train takes lots of inspiration from similar maps in Duke, Blood and Ion Fury

Oh, I realized what anon was getting at earlier, trying out the Sub Mortem beta in GzDoom, some of the music tracks are in differing volumes, October's music track is too loud, while Whine Cellar's music track is too quiet.

I think there's maybe a command to address this with GzDoom's SNDINFO? It sounds fine in Nugget because it appears to equalize music volume, something that I wish that maybe GzDoom tried to do. Maybe I'll just add a lump for this so that it's fixed for GzDoom/UzDoom users when they play.

>>12170548
>My biggest inspiration is the music I listen too
This can drive a lot IMO. Sometimes I maybe listen to a fun streamer or something in the background while mapping, but there's times where I just want to put on an album and listen to that, and sometimes that REALLY drives me to map harder and faster.

Yep, there we go, with...
>$musicvolume FILENAME X.X
... in a SNDINFO lump, you can either reduce the volume of the given music track, or boost it. Apparently it lets you do it by decibels if you want, but using 1.0 as a baseline you can just go 0.6 or 1.3 or something and that's fine.

I can for instance make the droning atmospheric track in Bereaved Battlement be earrape loud in GzDoom if I want to, but just a small boost should be fine. I'll look at trying to fix the level bugs in a bit and then we should have a finished Release Candidate.

I have a family with young kids and a hectic job and I love cracking open a beer at the end of the day, once everyone is asleep, and playing some /doom/.

I don't recall exactly, but I was blazing through the levels with IDDQD just to test and make sure that exits and intermissions were happening and working as expected, and probably I was being ballsy and careless, and just waltzed around like the floor or king boner rockets didn't hurt. I think I MAY have gotten it to happen a second time after running the level again, but I'm not sure.

For a lack of a better solution, maybe a failsafe triggered around the exit could make him get squashed by crushers? A band-aid solution, admittedly.

Otherwise, I find this setup to be pretty failure proof:
>monster in box
>floor slides him forward
>block in front of him keeps him in there
>action in level lowers block
>lowered block also slides him forward
>first linedef tries teleporting him into his spot in the level
>three extra linedefs silently puts him back at the beginning again

This way, if his destination is blocked, he's sent back and can try again, or if the teleport action just fails for some reason (linedef skip), then there's three more linedefs which will ensure that he can keep trying. The odds of four linedef skips in a row seem astronomically low, so it should never fail in unmodded circumstances.
The main drawback of this setup is that it's mildly tedious to build, but you can also copy and paste it and then alter numbers iteratively after you've built it.

I've been on a level generator kick for Doom. I know there's quite a bit of programs for making random Doom levels. While you can memorize the layouts after playing enough of their output, they're still fun for quick popcorn sessions or multiplayer where nobody knows what to expect going in.

Here's a few that I've autistically gathered:

AngDoom
>Angbash dungeon-crawler like levels but for Doom
https://www.doomworld.com/forum/topic/129372-angdoom-an-angband-style-doom-random-map-generator/

A WAD of Dungeon Mazes
>Boxy maze generator
>neat but produces unbalanced levels
https://www.doomworld.com/forum/topic/143889-random-doom-maze-maker/

DOOMBA
>Convert Roomba maps into Doom levels
>also has an image interpreter so you can convert image files to Roomba maps then Doom levels too
https://richwhitehouse.com/index.php?postid=72

SLIGE
>Needs no introduction
>one of the first (but not the VERY first) level generators
https://doomwiki.org/wiki/SLIGE

SLUMP
>It's SLIGE but cleaned-up and has different level generation algorithms
https://doomwiki.org/wiki/SLUMP

OBLIGE
>Also needs no intro
>each version has different level generation algorithms
>worth keeping all of them archived for different level styles
https://oblige.sourceforge.net/

ObHack
>Modded version of classic OBLIGE
https://samiam.org/slump/

OBSIDIAN
>OBLIGE but on steroids
>still actively developed today
https://obsidian-level-maker.github.io/index.html

PNG2WAD
>takes color-coded PNG map and spits it out as a Doom map
https://akaagar.itch.io/png2wad

LevFusion
>Converts Doom maps into RGB images and in reverse
https://gitlab.com/andwj/levfusion

GENWAD
>The very first level generator for Doom
>Can be found on D!Zone discs
>DOS only
https://www.doomworld.com/forum/topic/124990-genwad-the-oldest-random-map-generator-ever/
That's all I could find for now. I haven't found many, if any, for other games like Quake, Duke, etc., but if you anons know of them, give me (You)s in exchange for links.

I could maybe see randomly generated levels being mildly enjoyable for multiplayer with randomizing mods, but at the same time, you can get basically the same result by doing an iDGames Roulette and just picking something you don't recognize and just going YOLO, because then it has the chance to maybe be actually pretty good, and it might have custom assets and novel design which you're not expecting.

I'm not joking or exaggerating, by the way. I've found a few nice works by pure chance doing iDGames Roulette.

They do, quite often, but some get stuck in place.

It's worth having back versions of FreeDoom just to see the differences, especially for the ones that they tried to pull from the net.
>>

Bit of the same problem as when they replace a really good graphical asset for the sixth time, but then still hold on to one of the shitty and old ones, huh?
Isn't there some Demon Eclipse stuff in there too? That's high quality spritework, but it's also really distinct in style and very recognizable, it feels like slipping in a scene from Pulp Fiction as a placeholder for your WIP indie movie, and maybe Tarantino said that you could do that, but to me as a viewer that's still extremely jarring.

I remember some sloppy unity made indie 2d platformer being based on very classic mariolike gameplay and levels being comprised of “nuggets” - little fragments that the author made himself which then were composed into a longer level by the generator
I wonder if we could make a project like that - everyone submits little map fragments with enemies and then some generator like oblige restricted to only use those fragments would compose a short wad which would be personalized for every player - all the novelty of random generation without the soulless slop aspect of it
There could be different categories of fragments to submit - corridor, item room, weapon room, secret, boss room and so on

The Marathon community did something like that: Mararthon Yuge.
In short, a bunch of people created small map snippets that were then thrown into a random level generator.

And no, Mararthon isn't a typo.

Apparently Valve are finally doing that Steambox thing after all, it's kinda like a console in that part of the idea is hooking it up to a TV, but it's a Linux derived computer also or something, so it's far less cucked than a regular modern console, and probably very moddable.

Now, rather than focus on all kinds of not-retro games, I wonder, how well would that thing be suited for putting Doom, Duke, Blood, Quake, etc on my big TV? Like with sourceports and piracy.
>>
>>12171229
Since I'm still on the fence about this one aspect I'll ask:
Is survival a good starting difficulty? I'm worried I'm making the experience needlessly tough in an attempt to be immersive for my first playthrough.
>>
>>12171313
Just as good as anything else I'd imagine. Similar to the Steam Deck.
>>
>>12171315
Survival is fine, just save your ammo for enemies that either drop ammo and/or you can't easily crowbar.

Finally... the year of the Linux desktop...
>>
>>12171323
Alright, thanks. I was only asking because that big enemy rush bit at the end of the last level felt kind of impossible without clearing me out, but I guess on Survival you're meant to treat it like that Half Life 2 Episode 1 bit with the elevator and all the zombies rushing you, where you're buying time until you can escape and leave the cluster fuck.
>>
>>12171313
>how well would that thing be suited for putting Doom, Duke, Blood, Quake, etc on my big TV
Literally anything could do that. If you were so inclined, you can put games on your big TV with a $30 microcontroller right the fuck now instead of paying hundos for a bigger box.
>>
>>12171313
If it's like the Deck, it'll be slightly more annoying than a regular Linux desktop but completely viable.
>>
>>12171324
It feels like the Steamdeck and Steambox will probably be a bit of an entryway towards Linux stuff for a lot of people, by the virtue of being something stable and well supported.

>>12171331
There might also be a handful of not-retro games which I may be interested in. I don't know, maybe it'll be shit or not, but it's the first time since the PS3 that I felt a console wasn't completely AIDS.
>>
>>12171327
That was one of the few times I used ammo on melee enemies.
It's definitely meant to squeeze you, but if you've played conservatively to that point, it won't squeeze you completely dry.
>>
>>12171338
>by the virtue of being something stable and well supported.
This is Valve running the same shit that was wiping people's hard drives and got abandoned for the best part of a decade.
>>
>>12171338
>There might also be a handful of not-retro games which I may be interested in
It depends how far up the chain you want to go, but you can also use a myriad of $150-$200 mini-PCs to play quite a few games from across many years, although this is starting to leave the purview of /vr/

Survivor difficulty is fine as long as you are not brainless retard and know when to pick fights and when to save up on guns and ammo. I think I'm nearly done with the Birth expansion of Duke 3D. These levels fucking suck and I'm so tired of this game. Recently had to bust out my a back up laptop I had cause my old one has a swelling battery etc. So I stopped using it etc. Any ways the back up one is kind of a piece of shit. Definitely old tech grandma bought it off one of those TV ads or something idk. It was very nice and thoughtful anyway its kind of a piece of crap but modern gz doom runs brutal doom 22 like shit. I downloaded gz doom 2.30 and it runs brutal doom 22 with in city only on the same exact setting at gz doom 4. 12 whatever its at now way better. What exactly changes in it to make it run worse like this??? Also for note on my other battery swelling laptop it the last version of gz doom it ran smooth was 4.8. And lz doom runs better on both. Especially since newer versions of it come with all that texture filtering off. Idk
>>
>>12173651
How old is the laptop? GzDoom has jettisoned some legacy hardware support over the years to try to get better performance with later machines, along with easier maintenance.
You may want to check out LzDoom, it's a fork which is friendlier to lower spec hardware, I don't think it's entirely up to date on stuff like ZScript code and what not, but it should still be playable.

pretty much it, the team wants to get rid off all ripped assets, and currently they are doing this with all released stuff to have an update soon. I'm worried how retextured Dome will look like, that map is made out of Redneck Rampage textures, now they have to be replaced and I know the artist doesnt have enough skill to do it justice.

pic rel is those textures in Redneck, don't want to post the ashes map to keep spoilers away from anon above who just finished first ep.

Probably getting shown off at Realms Deep and a bunch of other things did it, along with the weird GoG redistribution of Ashes.

Mild exposure and suddenly they got to clean up their act, quite literally in some ways.

It's been fun though that's two Quake challenges in a row using the same mod. If not the vanilla levels, what are some other mods that would suit a challenge run? I usually take my time with Quake levels but I've been enjoying these.
>>
>>12173950
I don't know, new to quake myself
only played official levels, librequake, alkaline and a bit of retrojam. Maybe something from the latter?

That could work. The levels in those are often much more “bitesized”. You’re very limited looking for similar levels in Arcane Dimensions, Alkaline, and even Violent Rumble.
>>
I feel the ssg-first route may be the most optimal because you can unload quad on both the shambler and the final spawn. I just need to figure out the correct order to do things
>>
>>12172698
Thanks, anon. I've picked up a lot of experience since it was released and started making an effor to experiment more with the upcoming update to Operation Deadbolt.
I think the Agitator has it beat in terms of popularity all around (especially here) but it's kinda hard to top playing a big pissed off skeleton with a mix of guns and magic.

>>12173353
Thanks for playing, happy you found the combat interesting. Peanut unfortunately didn't quite make it in, I don't think sump anon was around when I asked for a photo of Peanut sitting up so I could make it into a shrunken down sprite.

The sump room is near the library, wedged between two bathrooms. There's a pack of Rolling Lock in there.

>>12173365
That's what I was thinking of, honestly - earlier in development they were arguably as dangerous as revs thanks to their higher pain chance. Using melee on them was basically a death sentence. Now it's risky, but at least you won't die 8 out of 10 times.

Since I'm here and haven't had a lot of time to use 4chan, here's the new NUGHUD for Deadbolt. It's been a blast making this particular mod more unique, suffice to say the boring but practical assault rifle is gone and the blaster will be basically a tech version of Agitator's haunted lighter.
Time is a flat circle, i was getting started with skelemod around this time last year.

Hopefully the armor will clear up any misconceptions.

you get there via the other route anyway. but give it a shot, who knows?
this reminds me that I had in mind to write a thing that uses the collision mesh to try and find the optimal path through any level, under certain simplifying assumptions..
>>

so to be clear deadbolt will have its own custom (or at least modified) enemies so no need to bring my own monster pack?
also i am stupid and don't know what nughud is, will this hud show up on gzd?

Probably not, but inducing a few more gay panics won't likely do much harm.

the idea is to portalize the collision BSP, then check which combination of portals to traverse leads to the fastest path, subject to having to push certain buttons etc. this becomes feasible because as far as collision is concerned the player is a point

Nosp2 and Nosp3 both use tracker music files extensively (MOD, IT, SM3, XM) and they work fine for me on Nugget. As far as I know, it simply inherited tracker support from Woof. I did a clean install just to check, and the music seems to work fine with all the default settings. Are you on linux or somesuch? It could be a bug.

>forlorn future on a dbp
i remember having to comment its decorations out to make the mod playable on augzen. fyi, dbp changes vanilla actors through dehacked, and hard replacing them through decorate with no precautions (like forlorn future does) can break shit.
the pictured dbp dehacks the spidermomma into some lower-teir enemy iirc. got bitten hard by the ashes monster pack because of it.
>>
>>12174127

Hey, at least you found them. DBPs are mostly solid, some are a bit boring and a few are especially bad, but you'll find at least a dozen you really like.

>>12174031
It's a just a weapons mod, so you can bring whatever you like. NUGHUD is exclusive to Nugget Doom, it's basically a simpler form of SBARINFO used on the ZDoom ports to put together new huds.

I'll make a ZDoom/Zandronum/GZDoom/whatever version in the future, I just want to squeeze as much out of MBF21 as I can. Until then, just use Nugget if you want to see it (keeping in mind the version out there hasn't been updated yet).

>>12174036
Thanks, but really I just assembled it. The people who helped me out with graphics did the heavy lifting as usual.

I'm gonna go back to the Trenchbroom mines now. There's much to be done even if I'm wiped.

Doing that and seeing it through to production is still a skill, one that's a lot less common than you'd imagine.

Why is the original Quake 2 client so temperamental? I installed it on an 86box window95 machine with a voodoo 1 and it just won't detect the thing, always switches back to software immediately when I select hardware rendering.
GLQuake, NFS, and other games I've tried all work fine.

I also had to switch my system language from English (US) to English (British) to get it to install, but that might have just been the .iso I was using.
