Newcomer here, I just bought today for less that $60 CAD a RG28XX and a R36 Ultra

What can I do to make these better? I keep reading about swapping the OS, others talk about flashing something

I have seen a few videos of the R36 Ultra running Dolphin MMJR with impressive results

I just want to use it for Gran Turismo games, especially GT4 Spec II hackrom
>>
>>12174723
>Dual screens are probably going to be all the rage in 2026 so hopefully we won't be waiting too long for one of these companies to stumble into accidentally making a good one.
considering there are still no good 4:3 handhelds i doubt that
>>
>>12174732
in short - don't trust the micro SD cards these come with, they most likely will be crap. Get new cards depending on how many games you want on them (e.g. 128gb if you're going to do Playstation 1 and below, wouldn't trust the R36 Ultra to do GameCube)
Flashing means using a card reader to burn a CFW onto the cards, MuOS for the RG28XX maybe and ArkOS for the R36 Ultra, although not sure which version
here, this guy's a fag but it might help
https://www.joeysretrohandhelds.com/guides/anbernic-rg28xx-setup-guide/
>>
>>12174732
Neither of those consoles emulate PS2 well, which means GT4 probably won't work well. If you're wanting to try a custom firmware/OS it needs to be flashed onto an SD card, that's what they mean by flashing.
>>
I'm going to prepare an SD card while waiting for my first handheld. Is there a quick and easy way to take a rom set and leave only one rom for each game?

Just because a console had a certain control scheme doesn't mean that's the best way to play it. See: toggling waggle to button inputs.
>>
>>12174783
In what currency? Because I bought a JP DSi XL off ebay for about 80 something CAD or less than 60 American bux and it seems fine besides yellow screens. Menus are all in moon but it still plays NA carts just fine.
Like >>12174789 says you likely will find yellow screens tho, but it seems like the fix is to just let it display white images on the highest brightness.

Anon, you still misunderstand. That example image was not two different scenes. It was the Zelda 1 HUD cut up and repositioned onto the lower screen. This is feasible using existing tools, but they aren't incorporated into any emulator I'm away of. ReShade may be able to do some of it with lots of finnicky configuration.

Here I've made another example. This would allow a very popular game, Neo Turf Masters, to be much more playable on smaller screens.
Notice how the graphics are duplicated along the bottom of the screen where it says "shot power". That's because that area corresponds to where the putting meter will appear once you get on the green in the game.

So now you can use the lower screen to be able to see the swing and putting meters more easily, which are very tiny on most handheld screens.

And again, none of this actually hacking the game's code. This is purely a post-processing effect.
>>
>>12174850
You can do this with live video editing software. But the only way you could see it on a handheld would be streaming.
>>
>>12174868
Steam Deck could do it.

Not sure about the R36, but the Anbernic device runs it's operating system from the micro SD card, like a computer runs it's operating system from a hard drive or SSD.
The custom OS you download will be a disk image that you write (flash) onto the SD card, replacing the default OS.

Trimui relies on bigger companies to sell and advertize their products. e6 is pretty much one guy and he's legit more compotent. That and they have a good deal with allwinner.

It says 8GB, will see once I plug it in

Other sources say it has none and relies entirely on the SD cards for the OS
It has 2 SD card slots, 0 care. Will buy a 512GB Express and have everything on it
>>
>>12175021
>he power bar is perfectly visible on the actual screen, you don't need to blow it up to 50x its size and pretend it looks good
Again, you do not understand the purpose here. It's not about looking good. It's about utility. If you think playing the game staring at a swing meter that's less a centimeter in size is playable then more power to you, but I would prefer to have the swing meter be large enough to not strain my eyes over 18 holes.

That means one is for the operating system, read the manual to make sure you know which is which.
>Will buy a 512GB Express and have everything on it
I would highly recommend something like 64GB for the OS card and then keeping all your games and saves and media on the 512GB.
>>
>>12175054
>Let me dream!!!
Nta but just so you know, GC and PS2 is like at least $150 and up when it comes to chinkhelds, and even then that might just get you maybe 2/3 of those libraries playable. If you have an android phone, you could download NetherSX2 and Dolphin to play some stuff, likely RPGs at most unless you have a plug-in or bluetooth phone gamepad.
>>
Does anyone own the RG505? It's under $100 with coupons in the AE sale, has an OLED screen that's perfect for PSP and can do some PS2/GameCube. What's the catch?
>>
If the handhelds have 2 in-use SD card slots, if I plug it into a PC will it see 2 drives or will it screw me up? Should they be Fat32 or ExFat?

Sorry for asking many questions but the RG28XX will be for a 6 years old kid and the other for me and my GF at home or else, she likes Pokémon

I want the kid to receive what was just a wild dream for us in the late 90s, a portable console with "ALL" games in it, backlit screen, and that can be plugged on the TV too. I would have been drooling

You guys are really helping me to make it a wonderful Christmas for the boy, thank you very much

Do I absolutely have to buy new SD cards or the chink ones that are included with good? I am supposed to receive a 64GB card, I want 128GB or 256GB if I transfer PS1 ISOs

They'll be separate but personally, you're better off powering the device down, removing whichever card you're working on, and sticking it into an sd card dongle that plugs into USB. Faster transfer speeds and all that.

Pure Red, Perfect Crystal, Emerald Rogue EX, Renegade Platinum, Sacred Gold, Volt White 2. RetroGameTalk. That's it for spoonfeeding.

It is called CDRomance.com not RetroGroomTans anymore.

RetroGroomTrans is the forum you must signup to if you want to comment under the newest ROMs in CDRomance.com, but you no longer need to be part of the Grooming Community to download ROMs from CDRomance.
>>
>>12175062
For setting the devices up with custom OS' or to learn how to use the stock OS' just read the guides at:

https://retrogamecorps.com/

They are unironically the best.
For already compiled ROM sets without doubles, and without shovelware google "Tinyset Archive", the sets are available at Archive.org, already curated to some anon's taste, but they are 99% excellent to most people's taste.

For window shopping and personally curating your ROMs, in order to have the BEST SELECTED ROMS you choose yourself, go to CDRomance.com and browse per console, it is a superb Catalogue with previews, covers, and most of the best romhacks already patched.
>>
>>12174898

Kinda shit ergos (inline shoulders, no triggers, as >>12175105 noted, plus no real contouring, just some antiskid pads on the back). Screen is decent, but still OG Vita (14 year old OLED, so burn-in is a genuine risk compared to newer devices), SoC is a bit meh today (compared to when it came out), memory is on the low side (for an Android device). Also, Gamma hasn't updated the OS since Jan 2024.

No problem, feel free to ask, just expect random rude snobs to answer first, cryptically. Just wait and you will get most of your answers.

I honestly recommend
https://muos.dev/
for the RG28XX, it is easy enough for a kid to learn to use, but depending on how simple you want it to be, you might want to set it up with the SIMPLEST OS possible for the kid to focus on games without an OS getting in their way.

The minimal os can be seen here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t2rMB5z9dQw
Do not be misled, he is showcasing a particula handheld as example, but the video explain how to setup ANY handheld with said OS, so just watch the video and consider whether your kid might want the simplest device, or whether they might want more cool stuff like Music Player, and even Movies or Cartoons in the device (if that is the case MuOS has media players, and a cool music player "Rockbox" under "PortMaster", Portmaster is a superb APP to port PC games to the RG28XX and it also has Rockbox for music)

For further reference: Portmaster.games
>>
>>12176049
For some violently retarded reason, TrimUI stock OS overboosts the already overclocked A133+ (standard A133 is 1.6 GHz, A133+ is 1.8) to 2 GHz. So you get a tiny bit of extra performance, for a shitload of extra heat. Several custom OS-es (and the CrossMix frontend) downgrade the clocks to specsheet levels (so max 1.8 GHz), or use separate governors for each emulator (lower freq boundaries for 8/16-bit, higher for 32+).

In America, Black Friday is basically when stores with High Rotation of inventory are about to receive new stock and must get rid of the old one, thus "giving it away" at supplier prices.

These 11:11 are offers on top of already cheap devices, so they are not as spectacular, but in my case the offer and coupon absorbed both the shipping price and the tariffs and taxes.

I would have paid literally TWICE this price had I purchased it from a local Mexican e-store instead.

>>12176332
The RG28XX is actually superior to the R36, it has a better chip and supports small 2D PC Ports through Port Master. It is better built and has better audio amplifier if you use it as Music Player with headphones.

I would always keep an Anbernic for myself over a generic R36, but then again, the better built quality is a plus for a kid who will certainly drop the device a couple times. Anbernic is sturdy.

I think it is actually generous to give RG28XX to the kid, considering they cannot purchase the better devices themselves. You can always sell the R36 if you dont like it and get a prettier anbernic later.

Well anons I love these threads and speculating and scrutinizing the next best chinkheld but Valve kinda ended the debate with SteamOS on ARM. Since the chinks were just ripping off the FEX project (which Valve is the primary contributor) for Winlater/GameSAARHub and Valve is gonna release a proper SteamOS for ARM with their Steam Frame I've put all my handhelds up for sale on jewbay and putting it towards one of those for now. It is so light, tiny and a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 with the best version of FEX emulation for PC games and the ability to load any Android APK natively. It is the perfect retro and PC gaming "handheld." Gonna pack that in my backpack and just play retro games while I watch jewtoob at work on it, or indie PC games.

Things will get exciting again when chinkheld manufacturers ship ARM SteamOS but it is unlikely since they seem insistent on using x86 emulation with a shitty FEX emulation to spy on us instead. It's been real. Good luck on your hunt for the perfect handheld and thanks for coming to my Ted Talk.

>>
>>12177018
>also you're gonna wear a vr headset at work?
Yeah why the hell not? I lead a small team of 6 employees and work in an underground datacenter as the lead infrastructure engineer. Nobody bugs me. We have TVs setup in the office. One dude plays PC games on his Surface (yikes), the older guy likes watching Thundercats and Spongebob one of the TVs, two just scroll their phones when not working and I have my own office (separate from their cubicles) with a TV I never use and typically just play on my Pocket 4 or just read mango.
I've automated a majority of our work but as we're the only ones who understand it we ain't going anywhere. Also government job. Pretty cozy. Would much rather put on a super tiny/light headset and just lean back in my Aeron and chill out with a big virtual desktop. Seems so cozy. My Index at home is so much work to enjoy. This seems perfect. It is smaller than most decently powerful chinkhelds too.

Sub 600 bucks for full VR that can emulate most PC games natively on the headset? Ultra portable (smaller and lighter than any Quest by about HALF). I already got an offer on my old Index at 800 bucks with base stations. So it is paid for. Not to mention Gabe tweaked the CS skin economy and turned by 50 dollar inventory into 2.1k (so far sold at least). It was gonna be free anyway. Unironically having a fully open source SteamOS on ARM with 100% perfect x86 emulation, native Android APK support and can load anything I want from AUR? Sounds like genuinely the absolute PERFECT mobile computing system. It is insane to me that people aren't more hyped. I probably won't even stream high-end games to it at home. It will be exclusively an ultra-light portable headset. I can't fucking wait.
Don't feel bad anon, I didn't get it at first either. But it is a mobile workstation you can fit in your pocket. Full field of vision virtual desktop on the go. It is the everything device.

Fair enough friend. With any luck the chingchongchinamen will start shipping their chinkhelds with SteamOS and we'll be in pure retrohandheld bliss. Emulation station, x86 emulation, no spyware (or at least spyware you can uninstall), etc.
Honestly I'd be shocked if Valve doesn't release a low cost Steam Pocket soon. They've done 100% of the hard work with the headset. Just take all the headset shit out, slap on a normal LCD and put it in a retroid pocket 6 shell or some shit. Good to go.
>>12177050
Valve hasn't announced when they're going to publish SteamOS ARM edition and who knows if there will be proper driver/firmware support for <insert random chinkheld here>. It is a portable game console so I see it as the same thing as a handheld. It is more portable than the Steamdeck and Switch 2 for sure. As soon as SteamOS ARM is public though I'm definitely going to try loading it on a bootloader unlocked phone.

You could have bought it for less than 200 on tuesday.
Genuinely the best 4:3 device this market has ever seen. There are stacked shoulder buttons available but as someone thats been using ambernigs inline shit since the 350M, I actually think they're more comfortable to use with your thumbs on the sticks, compared to the RP5.
The 2 genuine downsides are the lack of analog triggers and currently the high CPU mode forces the fan to be at max or near max.
I have other chinkhelds with triggers so I'm not too bothered by the former, and although the fan is absolutely loud and high pitched at max, the RP Flip 2 is worse, and this can be addressed in software.
I found that max CPU doesn't do much, any bottlenecks you encounter with this device right now will be software ones.
I keep the default CPU mode and set the fan to ~80. Inaudible but does the job.
Even demanding games haven't been able to get the device more than nominally warm, and the grips are plastic so any heat is localized.
This is it for me I think, especially if/when malishit gets proper gpu drivers

I don't entirely disagree, but these are sketchy Chinese electronics sold to accomplish a questionably-legal task.
It's common for them to come with pirated games bundled in, so I'm not surprised that there are regulations and standards they don't bother to follow when they make them.
That said, I'm glad I better understand the risks that come with using these handhelds now. If I get one, I'll try to stick to using lower wattage chargers with it.
>>12177095
Good to know. My phone got pretty warm charging it on a relative's laptop charger once, so it makes sense that that would destroy something without proper protection circuits.

Nta but as someone who uses a laptop charger on my phone every now and then, yeah it gets hot so I pull it off and wait till it's cooled down to put it back on. Funny enough the fast charger that came with it doesn't heat it up as much despite charging at least twice as fast as the laptop charger. That said, I don't recommend anything but the lowest tier chargers for chinkhelds. I think the standard is 5w or something.
>>
>>12177407
USB-C laptop chargers have been a thing for years now. I'm a poorfag though, so my laptops all have barrel jacks on them.
>>12177408
I wouldn't be surprised if your phone's original charger works faster because it doesn't cause your phone to thermal throttle like your laptop charger does.
Like, your laptop charger is probably trying to charge your phone so fast that it causes thermal protection measures to kick in, in turn reducing the speed that it ends up charging at compared to the original charger.

The dpad itself just needs a little extra pivot.
The issue is that the screw placement is wonky so theres more pressure on one side, which is why the right diagonals are much more sensitive than the left.
Easy fix is to loosen the screw close to the dpad a bit, works very well but makes the device slightly creaky when you flex it.
More involved fix is stuffing something nonconductive next to the screw on the screen side, so that you can get the board down tight while keeping the pressure even.

This is the fast charger of a decade ago. Regular charges were 5v - 700mA or 5v - 1A.

A 5v - 2A us the safest fastest way to charge your hand held coolly, prolonging battery life in the process (specially charging between the range 20%-90%)

The devices come with a USB-A charging cable with good reason.

>you’d still be saving money by not having to pay tariffs
I know 4chan is generally full of retards but it is wild people still don't understand how tariffs work. The manufacturer or importer pays tariffs. The cost of tariffs are baked into the price you pay. If you're buying from someone that is adding a "tariff" charge at checkout you're being scammed. That is not how it works. Tariffs are paid long before the transaction you make.
>>
>>12178640
Even with the waiting he's still shelling out $700-1400 every few weeks. Yeah, he complained about not getting the Sugar until months later but he tends to get most of these AYN funded ones close to launch and any retail machine day one pretty much. Dude, when you import from China, YOU PAY THE TARIFFS.
When you purchase form an American Seller, then the seller is the importer then the seller bakes the tariffs into the domestic price.
These offers are mostly from China, in which you are importing directly.
>>
>>12178658
The seller imports it TO YOU. It is not legal to charge a "tariff fee" on a consumer purchase. If you're being charged you can file an FTC complaint. They are by law required to put that in the MSRP.

You sound like professional importer, then you might have a clearer concept of American imports.
In my case, the tariffs Trump forced my president (Mexico) to add to Chinese products (to try to toss a wedge between Mexico and China) are relfected as Taxes. Before Trump's pressure we paid 15% Taxes, after Trumps' pressure for us to levy tariffs on China, the Taxes went up to 30%.

Tariffs are a Tax at the end of the day, and you are nit picking here, because the origin of this discussion is Anon saying that the Discounts and Coupons would absorb the tariffs, which is true, it does not matter how they are written down on paper, as Tariffs, or Taxes, or Base Price, at the of the day a Tariff is a Tax, a rise in price levied upon the buyer (Trump cant Tax China, only Americans), and the Chinese Coupons and Discounts are a way to make up for said Taxes.

>rise in price levied upon the buyer
The biggest psyop about all of this tarriff shit that pisses me off is that it let all of the mega corps completely off the hook as far as price hikes go. There are many many products that have huge profit margins where the companies selling them could easily eat the cost of a tariff to stay competitive in the market. But NO, everyone is IMMEDIATELY BRAINWASHED into just accepting that it's something THEY MUST AND WILL pay. It's fucked.
>>
>>12178712
>There are many many products that have huge profit margins where the companies selling them could easily eat the cost of a tariff to stay competitive in the market
Which is exactly what China does (e.g. 11:11)
They are unironically better at Capitalism than America.

And yes, it is funny how people think America is P0WNING LE CHINA with Tariffs when the only ones paying Tariffs (Taxes) are Americans. Tariffs are hurting either American Middle Classes purchasing affordable Chinese products, or Upper Classes importing products losing markets and profits either by rising prices or absorbing tariffs themselves, respectively.

He is right about what?
He is trying to refute this statement:

>you’d still be saving money by not having to pay tariffs

How is the above statement wrong?
Are discounts off the regular list price, plus coupons that equate or even surpass the Tax/Tariff and Shipment cost, not saving money?

The Anon that brought up "people do not understand tariffs" and went on to agree that tariffs are levies on products, that add to their cost UPON importation, as if that explains how coupons or discounts don't save money.

He is just trying to sound smart and knowledgable by going on a rambling tangent that never address the point he was trying to "refute" so flippantly, again the point was:

>you’d still be saving money by not having to pay tariffs

How is it not true?
The only reason contempt for the Orange Golem was brought up is because HE CAME UP WITH THE TARIFFS ON CHINA, it is not random TDS posting, it is addressing the root cause of tariffs.
Tariffs levied upon Retro Hand Helds. It is completely pertinent.

>you’d still be saving money by not having to pay tariffs

This was not about saving money with coupons and 11:11 discounts (I got confused by the running theme of the last 3 days being 11:11 sales).
The argument was:

BY PURCHASING A USED DEVICE IN 160USD IN MARKETPLACE, YOU WOULD STILL SAVE MONEY EVEN IF THE LIST PRICE IN CHINA WERE 140USD, BECAUSE TARIFFS, TAXES, AND SHIPPING COSTS WOULD RISE THE FINAL PRICE TO WELL ABOVE 160USD.

My bad, I sperged like a retard, obsessed by MUH COUPONS AND MUH 11:11...

This was about PURCHASING USED IN MARKETPLACE VS PURCHASING NEW FROM CHINA.

Now Nintendo Amoebas are trivial, but back then this was an opening, futuristic, portal...

tape as in >>12177486?
yes, the pivot is slightly too short.
Here are the problems for the zero 28 but applies to a lot of chinkhelds
>sensitive diagonals:
pivot is too short (on some devices the shape of the conductive pads is bad like 351 era ambernig)
fix is to add pivot, cover pads or both if its a genuinely shit device like the sf2000
>right diagonals are more sensitive than left
board is screwed in more on the right side of the dpad than left, the screw right next to the analog stick is a clamping one and doesn't screw through the board.
Hard to blame them because there's just no room.
Fix is to loosen that screw to even out the pressure or put a spacer etc so that you can torque the screw all the way while still keeping the board balanced pressure wise. its hard to explain but i think you get the point.
i think its easier to just loosen the screw.
doing both addresses both problems
Bonus:
>face buttons dont always actuate/have bad travel unless you press them in the exact center
add a spacer between each button and the membrane, i posted a pic earlier in the thread
maybe i really should go back to making videos, its insane how people can't/dont want to address dpads and sheit. Also I just noticed I got banned for racism kek

Nigga why you be asking /vr/ for parenting advice?

I'd recommend getting a simple durable chinkheld and keep the gamelist CURATED with less than 50 games until the PS1 so they dont get overwhelmed with choice paralysis. Also having your kid actually go outside and socialize with other kids the same age is crucial for development and way better than letting them play video games.

thank you very much for the help
I've loosened the screw you drew the arrow to and the one next to the analog stick and it seems to have cut down on false diagonals to the right by a lot, but I still occasionally get them sadly
how exactly do you access the dpad pivots? I tried unscrewing the screw next to the analog stick but I couldn't pry the board off
I'm stupid and you're literally the only source of info for this on the internet, thank you for your patience

By pivot I mean adding some tape etc under the stem of the dpad to make it functionally taller, which will decrease the diagonal sensitivity.
You do have to take the whole board out including the screen and analog stick ribbon cables.
This is from memory but I believe that's all the screws. Just go slow and dont force anything.
Make sure to take out the SD card since it goes through the shell. You dont have to take out the shoulder buttons but it makes it easier.
Pro tip: put some tape over the volume and power button holes from the outside, it will save you from the massive ballache of having those buttons fall out when you're putting the board back in.
After you finish that screw everything in tight except for that one screw, keep it a ~quarter turn loose, I found that gives the best results.
Also I'm usually the biggest asshole itt lol
>>
>>12178740
>Just announced we'll only see the SD2 when better chips that offer a 50% increase over the Steam Deck release.
>Someone did some napkin math and the current best PC handhelds are only something like 20% better tan it.
We're never seeing this thing for another five years, are we? I might as well buy an OLED at this point.
>>
There will be no reason to get anything but a Pocket AIR Mini
>>
What's a good saturn emulator for my RP classic? I tried using yaba but it seems slow.
>>
>>12179478
I spent the last two hours disassembling and reassembling it multiple times to get the buttons and dpads working right and I finally got it
I put a piece of tape under the dpad like your pic and I loosened the screw too and it definitely is a lot harder to get false diagonals now
thanks for the help!

Yeah, for some reason, people in this general like to spout objectively wrong bullshit for the sake of ragebaiting. Which is weird, since I thought /vr/ was one of the more obscure boards, which are normally supposed to be for people genuinely interested in the hobby, rather than the shitposting reddit tourists on /v/ who want ebin screencaps to repost for karma. I guess handhelds are too popular to have genuine discussion anymore?

getting real sick of android emulation input lag tbdesu
>>
Is the Retroid Pocket 6 the best portable option (without getting into absurd prices) for GC/PS2/DS/3DS emulation?
I've never bothered with emulation handhelds before, but I'd like something relatively simple to set up and well constructed enough mainly for those 4 platforms.
>>

I mean for PS2 games that had ports to the PSP, like Burnout Dominator or Dead to Rights. Ignoring content differences that differ from game to game, is it worth it to have the UI at a natural 16:9 ratio without glitching or stretching, in exchange for it being half-resolution?
>>
>>12180476
Depends on the game.
Some PS2 games have decent widescreen patches while others break UI elements, and PSP ports universally looks worse than the PS2 version. The best option for each game is always a case-by-case basis.
>>
>>12180476
Is Dominator on PSP 60 FPS like PS2 or does it need a hack?

Looking for something with good build quality, feel, and button feel, and decent screen, that can play mainly SNES and Genesis era well, and maybe some GBA or newer. Prefer horizontal layout. Is RX35XX-H the best option at the price point for me? Is it stupid to get one of these if I already have a N3DSXL?
