>Critics have called this the greatest JRPG everIt's...fine? What the fuck.
>>12174879Critics are correctLet me guess not enough waifufagging for you?
Stop talking like a fag.
>>12174881Not enough characterfagging. I can't hang my hat on anyone. They're all cutouts, representations of ideas - interesting ideas - set against the most typical of typical JRPG gameplay. >>12174883Thanks for the bump.
>It's...fine?I don't even disagree with you but yeah you talk like a fag. Very womanly.
>>12174890the dry minimalism and sense of loneliness is the appeal, but it also gives the game something people that are afraid of anime can say makes it not like the other anime games which makes them comfortable praising it
>>12174879It was there for hurricane katrina when Kingdom Hearts 2 did fuck all. That alone makes it the greatest.
>>12174879my only exposure to this franchise was a shitty 2010 or so mmorpg that i turned off 15 minutes in and probably got shut down a month later
>>12174879It's because Nocturne is the most Persona-like SMT. Actual gameplay with no gay undertones. Nothing but homosex simulators were made after SMT IV. Especially SMT V, I love how the fags scrambled to defend their boyfriend dating simulator.
>>12174879It's not even the best mainline SMT
>>12174879it's better than whatever slop is your favorite RPG
>>12175184I thought SMT:if... was supposed to be the Personalike one.
>no AliceI don't think so. But it's easily in the top 5 best SMT games.
>>12174879It was my first Megaten game and I enjoyed it big time. At first I thought it was going to be a horror game, lol.
>>12175547Naw.
It really shows how superior 3rd person perspective is. Fundamentally, it is the same as the rest of the series, but the presentation and immersion are just next level compared to all the other games.
>>12175398correct but Nocturne is the best /vr/ mainline SMT game
>>12177056You can play the dungeon navigation in first person too
>>12177526>Apocalypse>what if we made Persona but in SMT?: the game>bestnah
>>12175102ding ding
>>12175595Most of the people in this thread have minimal experience with the series. Or they're baiting. No serious individual would say Nocturne is the most like Persona. I'd say Nocturne is high tier but there's a small handful of better games
i love shin megami tensai games, my favorite right now is shin megami tensai persona 5, it used to be shin megami tensai persona 4. i love these games whenever i am feeling sad or have a tough day i play shin megami tensai 5 or shin megami tensai persona 4 as the bight colors and music always makes me feel better. i love the characters and it teachs me good things for school . i cant wait to move to japan and find a japanese friend and maybe even a girlfriend and i feel that the shin megami tensai persona 5 and shin megami tensai persona 4 games have giving me a head start for when i move there. i cant wait to go on a beach vacation trip with my friends. i love shin megami tensai persona 5 so much. gonna go steal some hearts now
>>12178073For how ironically cringe this is, this was literally me when I was a depressed loner and outcast at 12, except substitute persona 5 for 4.
>>12177526>4 and 4A still locked to handheld shitso retarded that fatlus couldn't just share persona and smt on playstation. noooo only persona allowed. would've made it so much better
>>12175184you couldn't be wronger. persona is SMT for gays and zoomers who want the story without the gameplay
>>12174879>>Criticsi thought it was the most UNDERRATED game, Chrono Trigger again?
>>12180087>persona is SMT for gaysNah thats SMT.>Persona is so heterosexual that SMT IV and Apocalypse try to be as hetero.>Just cult classics.>Make V about a twink femboy having a suit boyfriend.>Re-release doubles down by making MC the reincarnation of the suit's girlfriend. >Best selling SMT ever.>>12175184This. Its crazy how all females, inclusing demons, want to hump on your dick while V protag has gay angst over his dead bf.>>12174879Its pretty good. I liked SJ and IV Apocalypse more though. My main issue is lack of demons and they take so long to level up so your team feels static most or the time.
>>12174879It's not like that's a high bar. 99% of JRPGs are copypasted garbage meant to appeal to a specific subset of nerds who just want the same stupid shit over and over in a genre where utter crap like FFVII is considered unique and original.>FFVIIYeah, it's a bad game. They literally just made a model of SSJ Gohan from the Cell Saga and put him in as the main character without even bothering to change the color of his hair or his gi. The other main character is a racist Mr. T stereotype who swears in punctuation for half of his dialogue, and the story is about the two of them going up against le genereic megacorportion #14,917 with the laziest writing known to man.Shim Megani Tensei is a goddamn masterpiece compared to shit like that.
>>12174879People in the west got introduced to JRPGs with things like FF7, FF6, Chrono Trigger, Super Mario RPG or Pokemon. Even the hardest JRPGs people knew about could be either cheesed or you could just grind all the challenge away. They got a reputation as comfy games you play for the plot and graphics. Nocturne is a game that's light on the plot, un-comfy, and actually tries to challenge you. To many people it was mind blowing. Add the edgy "ally with Lucifer to kill God" plot that would attract any rebel teenager mad at their parents trying to make them go to church and it's no wonder people liked it. To top it off, it also has Dante from the Devil May Cry™ series.
>>12181003Are there other JRPGs that are challenging in the same way as Nocturne? The only other RPGs I found to have any difficulty at all is Etrian, but that's probably considered a different genre. I know there's plenty of bullshit moments and difficulty spikes in a lot of JRPGs, but that's just due to bad balance or being shit.
Temper my expectations /v/I think Megami Tensei II is the peak of the series out of MT, SMT, SMTII, and SMTif... and its not even close. Will I like SMTIII when I eventually play it?
>>12182219SMTII is shit.Yeah I said it.Nocturne is good so you wont like it.
>>12174879You posted SMT_Nocturne.jpeg when you meant to post FF7.jpeg
>>12174879>Criticsjust watch the longplay and then decide for yourself if it's worth playing?
>>12182229Nigga I said MEGAMI TENSEI II
>>12177534Yes its the best.I kill the previous protag, take his woman and then genocide the current universe so I can lead the new one.
>>12182248anon you can just download it and play it yourself for free
>>12177003Alice is boring.
>>12174879Because when it came out, players were filtered by its bullshit RNG mechanics ( and the Matador fight ). But to those who survive it ( and learning about the nature of the game ), they had a good time.
>>12180447>only SJ mention in the whole threadthe rest of you have shit taste>>12182251based unc
>>12182251Holy shit giga based!Havent finished it yet because the PSP with my save had died but got the files so will return to it soon.>>12186335Well SJ its not retro after all.
>>12174881Fpbp
>>12182251is it really as hard as people say it is if you don't bother mapping out the dungeons yourself? people said smt1 was hard but most of the game you're just gunning fools down left and right with sleep bullets, and if that doesn't work then spamming zio with a fast character often will
>>12188119I wouldn't call any of the first 5 games hard. There's times where you can be in a bad situation and at risk of dying, and usually the early game can fuck you up, but nothing's ever too bad.In MTII you definitely will want to map things out for yourself, I can't imagine anyone going through certain areas without a map. Encounters won't challenge you too much though other than late game encounters where many things either reflect physical or gun damage so you need to pay attention rather than mindlessly spamming Auto. The second boss fight of the game will immediately push your shit in and rape you hard, but the second you strategize for the fight you end up finding the primary weakness of every boss in the entire game; Bufu Stones, they cast Bufu and you can hold up to 9 of them. Bufu in this game inflicts the freeze ailment that wastes a turn 100% of the time, and the only fucking boss in the whole thing to resist it is the final final boss. There's also a late game dungeon where you lose your partner for the duration of it, making petrification a severe threat as a single thing landing a successful petrify on you is an instant game over (which sends you back to town Dragon Quest style in case you aren't familiar with the first MT either)
>>12188342makes sense then, ig i'll bust out a graph chart on ms paint when i get around to it. also i'm currently playing smt 2 and i've heard you (presumably the protagonist) needs 10 magic points for something), is that required? because it's not like he uses it, unless he does learn how to harness it in the late game and a boss is difficult without that stat boost or something.
>>12178073We all have been there
>>12188376Yes, the 10 Magic is required for a key item later on. Equipment does count towards this but you'll still need a few levels/stat boosts regardless. You can also get a drink from the bar that gives you like +3 Magic but you can only get the event for the key item during a specific moon phase, the same moon phase that drink buffs run out on, so you kind of have to artistically plan out your steps and such to get in there with the buff active, or you could be like me, who unknowingly broke the game by having a character leave the party while under the effects of a drink, so the game forever thought I was drunk and could not get drinks ever again, meaning I had to grind out three levels to hit the 10 Magic when I got to that point in the game.
Just started SMT II, is there anything I should know? I'm using my SMT I build of just maxing out STR and VIT until I get the biggest machine gun I can/whatever the hinokagatsuchi equivalent is and hoping it works.
>>12189530VIT is a pretty useless stat since STR also increases HP. You should invest into INT instead for easier negotiations with demons, as well as SPD so you consistently act first.
>>12188119The only hard thing in MT2 is the dungeon where you are inside the fish if you didn't get a stack of core shields from Rag's shop to cheese it.
>>12177003SMT3 is the only title that actually respected the original intent behind her. She shouldn't exist in SMT games past SMT1 and was only a easter egg in SMT2.
>>12189530Yeah, it's not as good as SMT1. So temper your expectations.
>>12189530Do not equip any weapon with high atk power. Instead only look at the number of hits. The game has a nasty glitch where your damage can easily overflow and you will only do single digit damage. Also the postgame dungeons has huge stat requirements that you have to work for from the beginning if you even want to play them because its implementation sucks. You can't just continue after beating the game. You have to beat it and then reload a save from before entering the final dungeon losing all the exp and other stuff you gained in it.
SMT is such a good series, bros.
Hmmm thinking about it I didnt do the Ex dungeon of 2.I think you need to beat the game which I did but I dont think I ever found it.
>>12178073lul did i skip this phase or did i repress it
fatlus hasnt made a worthwhile game since megaten 2 for NES. the sheer definition of weebslop for incels.
>>12189751>The game has a nasty glitch where your damage can easily overflow and you will only do single digit damage.wonder if they fixed that in the ps1 port
>>12189530there's a part where they tell you to look for a demon who's rampaging and another demon who's a boss. what you have to do for the rampaging demon is enter an enclosed gate that doesn't look like you can enter it and step on a tile jutting out. those tiles are how you speak to people on the overworld in general btw, i don't know if they were in smt1 but they are here.
