Witnessing millennial nostalgia online during the mid-late 2000's, I got the impression that Metroid was this titan franchise that sold tens of millions of copies. It's a shame the series never actually sold that well, because these games are absolutely fantastic and 100% deserve their inflated popularity. So why was Metroid such a dominant part of online gaming culture in the 2000's?

r&d1, the guys who made the first five 2d games, were absorbed into another department unfortunately. same reason why wario land is dead. one of the biggest losses in gaming. imagine the potential ds kino that was lost to time... instead we live in a world with master of shit. but i digress.

It was never a big franchise but it was good. Popular doesn't always mean best, and online retro gaming communities weren't casual gamers they were people looking for better stuff than GTA and Tony Hawk

Because it introduced everything you need in a good exploration game - map, meaningful upgrades, areas that become easier to backtrack with upgrades. That's it. What can you improve? Gunpei Yokoi left the company and died. Dread is actually decent though, I would say it successfully replicates a tiny bit of its genius.

Gunpei Yokoi left the company and died. The series was not especially popular in Japan.

Videogames moved on, you don't get intricately designed games designed to intrigue the psychologically invested player any more. Everything became flashy and dumbed down.

SR388, a cancelled Metroid 2 remake fangame. AM2R is called Another Metroid 2 Remake since there were several other projects back in the day attempting to remake the game.
