Now that Metroid is dead, can we discuss why the genre peaked here? why can't they even replicate a tiny bit of its genius? Also, why did the Nintendo give up on developing the series in-house?
>why did the Nintendo give up on developing the series in-house?Money
>>12181080You would think that paying Jap salaries is more economical than paying Californian salaries
>>12181083They literally had no idea what to do with with the franchise post super until they saw some Aeon Flux ass looking tech demo out of Retro, it was only after seeing the hype of the Prime trailer that they even bothered cooking up Fusion.
>>12181089>>12181083Also Retro is a Texas company
>why did the Nintendo give up on developing the series in-house?Imo the lack of popularity in JapanA new Nintendo employee in Kyoto has problably never played a Metroid in his life, so yeah better give the IP to americans or spanish that know what Metroid is about (in theory , seems like modern Retro Studio don't know what Metroid is about anymore)
>>12181107They thought "Modern scifi is and should strive to be Marvel shit" and decided to turn Prime 4 into quip shit.
>>12181072I really liked Dread.
Other M is good, actually.
>>12181126>>12181139Neither are retro
>>12181072its not really that good (super materoid)
>>12181139https://youtu.be/XvZG-TJes4w?si=BklO6hqNZn8l6XJd
It doesn't make enough money for them to care.
>>12181072NES has better freedom. Dread has better weapons. Fusion has much, MUCH better boss fights
>>12181089>They literally had no idea what to do with with the franchise post superWhich is funny, since Super rehashes a lot of the first game
Witnessing millennial nostalgia online during the mid-late 2000's, I got the impression that Metroid was this titan franchise that sold tens of millions of copies. It's a shame the series never actually sold that well, because these games are absolutely fantastic and 100% deserve their inflated popularity. So why was Metroid such a dominant part of online gaming culture in the 2000's?
>>12181072how is it dead? it used to be dead, but now it's bigger than it's ever been. and dread was great, dunno about prime 4 since a. it's not out yet and b. i haven't been paying attention to what's revealed anyway.anyway you're at least right about it being peak, but zero mission ties with it imo even if the 100% route is lame.oh and>why did the Nintendo give up on developing the series in-house?r&d1, the guys who made the first five 2d games, were absorbed into another department unfortunately. same reason why wario land is dead. one of the biggest losses in gaming. imagine the potential ds kino that was lost to time... instead we live in a world with master of shit. but i digress.
>>12181436> So why was Metroid such a dominant part of online gaming culture in the 2000's?It was never a big franchise but it was good. Popular doesn't always mean best, and online retro gaming communities weren't casual gamers they were people looking for better stuff than GTA and Tony Hawk
>>12181489>how is it dead?Prime 4 has an actual quirk chungus dork character following Samus around for some portion of the game. I'm not on team "it's never been so over", but it's fucking grim, man.
>>12181782alright sounds retarded unless they're doing another raven beak style twist (except this time it'll be more like double from megaman x4), hopefully they'll listen to feedback about it and tone it down or just cut that part entirely and at worst have him be a minor npc.
>>12181779But there ain't much that's better than Tony Hawk.
>>12181794I see the novelty but by then I was playing marvel vs Capcom for multiplayer so it was shit I played just to placate my normie friends while wishing they were into more demanding games only like three kids I knew played
>>12181072>why the genre peaked here?Because it introduced everything you need in a good exploration game - map, meaningful upgrades, areas that become easier to backtrack with upgrades. That's it. What can you improve? The only thing I can think of is allowing to make my own notes on the map, like a certain non-retro game about bugs did.
>>12181072The secret must somehow correlate to having shit controls, ala Resident Evil.
>>12181072>why did the genre peaked here?Because everything else has been derivative.>why can't they even replicate a tiny bit of its genius?Gunpei Yokoi left the company and died. Dread is actually decent though, I would say it successfully replicates a tiny bit of its genius.>Also, why did the Nintendo give up on developing the series in-house?Gunpei Yokoi left the company and died. The series was not especially popular in Japan.Videogames moved on, you don't get intricately designed games designed to intrigue the psychologically invested player any more. Everything became flashy and dumbed down.
>>12181160>The series is dead>No it's not, there are some modern games>NOOO DONT TALK ABOUT NON-RETRObrain of a fart
>>12181072>Now that Metroid is deadIt already died with the GBA games, Prime aside.>can we discuss why the genre peaked here?NES Metroid is better.>Also, why did the Nintendo give up on developing the series in-house?Better question is why they gave the reigns to a retard who's never beat a single Metroid game until Samus Returns on 3DS.
>>12181072metroid was never profitable or popular
games stopped being good once they started putting the word super in front of the titles
>>12181436lots of people were emulating it in the 2000s, which doesn't translate to sales
Fool! Metroid peaked with Prime. Get it right.
>>12181934But Mario and Pokemon were which are objectively retarded games for homos
>>12182104Primefags will say they're "True metroid fans", but then bitch about any time it doesn't resemble prime, as if 2D metroid games are suddenly not true metroid games.
>>12181967super was always temporary, then 64 came to replace it. for gamecube they should've put 3 cubed in their titles, teach a little algebra to em.
>>12181072SM was still close to its source material, Ridley Scott's Alien. Subsequent Metroids have all strayed away from that and become more capeshit-like.
>>12181782>>12181790Maybe they'll do the Halo 2 thing and say, "remember when we showed hiw the game was going to be? Nope, you don't, this is how the game was always going to be." Then cut that whole section out. Maybe it's just some kind of stupid viral marketing thing to get people to talk about how bad the game is going to be so when the game comes out and it's just mediocre people will talk about how it exceeded their expectations.
>>12182319/v/ faggots were saying Fusion isn't a Metroid game. Retards being retarded.
>>12181072I wish Super Metroid had received a remaster for the GBA that adjusted its controls to make it playable.
>>12181436>So why was Metroid such a dominant part of online gaming culture in the 2000's?Autism. Autistic speedrunners. Autistic lorefags looking for deeper meaning in a pastiche of 80s sci-fi. Autistic coomers fapping to Samus.
>>12184251Super Metroid's controls are better than Fusion's.
>>12184251I prefer Zero Mission to an hypothetical Super Metroid Remake.
>>12184251There's a years old PC sort of port (or maybe just a port I don't remember) that lets you adjust Super Metroid to play like the GBA games, including having a gamepad where you can hold R or whatever to fire a missile and release it.
>>12181287Yet none of them are actually good
>>12181812You can add retarded jrpg stats and gay vampire twinks and tell everyone it's a new genre
>>12182602>doom3 not on da cube
>>12183378>Maybe it's just some kind of stupid viral marketing thing to get people to talk about how bad the game is going to be so when the game comes out and it's just mediocre people will talk about how it exceeded their expectations. It's this. They already spoiled that everyone but him dies and once people reach that scene suddenly everyone'll scream that the game's "KINOOOOOO", then it sells 2mil. copies, Nintendo will mask their disappointment over the dev cost to sales ratio and consider the game a """success""", then they'll quietly shelf Metroid and we'll never see another game in the series again.
>>12184331That is exactly how soulslikes were born.
>>12184326not true, by the way
>>12181072Impossible without Yokoi
Why is it so hard for them to just copy and paste Super Metroid?
>>12181287Super has the music and atmosphere.
>>12186654It has the speed too. Metroid Prime has the music and atmosphere, but I look at Prime 4 and the lock-on gameplay from 2001 turns me off completely.
>>12181436What's this gif from? This is what I wanted every since super Metroid.
>>12187624SR388
>>12186923they should put the speed booster in prime 4. even if it's limited like how the screw attack was implemented it'd be a lot of fun to shinespark in 3d. they managed it in other m apparently so it can't be that tricky to do.
>>12181072I enjoy Zero Mission more desu
>>12187624SR388, a cancelled Metroid 2 remake fangame. AM2R is called Another Metroid 2 Remake since there were several other projects back in the day attempting to remake the game.
>>12187624Cancelled Metroid 2 Remakehttps://youtu.be/Ba6-DtjuZ8EAfter that I think it became AM2R.Though I'm not so sure. Physics feel different. There's a fan game called Metroid Origins that look and plays more like Super Metroid, similar to this trailer above.:https://youtu.be/c7JEVFV4FxY
