Some of those old japanese games had a way to subvert your expectations based on how their characters look.Gen'an Shiranui is an edgelord goblin that wants to understand what evil is, but he's actually a pretty nice guy.Axel Hawk, the retired boxing champ from Fatal Fury 2 that busted many people up, is actually a really nice guy and his most famous artwork is of him visiting his mother.Most characters from Soul Calibur are actually good people, even if they look really edgy.On the other hand, Fo Fai of Toshinden fame is actually one of the most evil characters from the series, even if he looks like a walking sage old man troupe. Even the way he died leaves no leeway to any kind of redemption (trained a monkey to kill people, monkey killed him).
Fighting games always have cool character designs and I want to get to know these characters and go on adventures with them but all they do is move back and forth in a small area and fight one guy at a time.
