Evening gentlemenLast night I beat FF7 for the first time and it knocked my socks off. The music, the characters, the backgrounds, the city of midgar and the wider world you explore, how the materia system lets you swap builds on the fly, it was incredible. What game in the series should I play next? Never been much of a JRPG guy, only other one I've played was the super mario one for the snes that I dropped about 2/3rds in.Also general Final Fantasy thread I suppose.
If you want an older one try 6, if you want a new one try 8
>>12188749I just beat FF7 in one night and boy are my arms tired!
My biggest complaint about the materia system is that most of the combination materia is backloaded to late-game chocobo breeding and/or the crater. There's a lot of depth and cool shit you can do with it, but you don't get anything to actually use them on by the time you have access to them.
>>12188682FF9 next
>>12188682If you can handle 32 bit graphics play 6- best in the series. If not, play 9- it was the last true FF game. IMHO skip 8 entirely unless you're a min/max build autist in which case you'll probably love it. Worst story of the original 9, worst characters, although the first disc was pretty okay and the card mini game was quite fun. Overall it's the least-best FF until series jumped the shark with X and all its rampant unmitigated faggotry.
>>12188929whatever you do dont listen to this retarded fucking pleb
SSS: VII VIIIS: VI XA: V IXB: I IVC: II IIIDont Play: Everything elsechoose accordingly. you cant go wrong with anything from V-X. gameplay wise the best are V and X. story wise the best are VII, VIII and X. exploration/secrets wise, the best is VI. any other "opinion" in this thread is objectively dogshit, btw.
>>12188682you should play X next, VII and X are the best newbie entries because they have the best characters/story/world. then after try out VI and VIII.
>>12188682That's cool, I'm glad people are still playing this game for the first time and enjoying it. Seems like all you see is people shit talking it nowadays
>>12188929After that Nomuras bitch ass kept the bad game combo going with Kingdom Farts. Hot topic belt ass motherfucker
>release upgraded ports of FF1 and FF2 for PS1, the west can finally play FF2 without emulation>release mostly straight ports of FF5 and FF6 for PS1, the west can finally play FF5 without emulation>release mostly straight ports of FF4 and....Chrono Trigger, the west doesn't get to try out FF3 outside of emulation until the fucking Pixel Remasters came outIt ticked me off back then and still does to this day. We could have had the first 9 Final Fantasy games on the same console.
>>12189028Technically FF3 got that DS remake.
>>12189028it's probably because unlike ff1 and 2, 3 doesn't have a wonderswan port to base it off of, so they'd have to redo the sprites. although one was in the works but got cancelled from what i hear.
>>12188682I recommend trying 4, 5, 6, 8, 9 and 10 and Tactics
Decided to go with 6, already very charmed by the game. I like how your other party members react when Terra first casts a spell, and seeing Locke's spirite sleeping when you leave the save menu on for a while is genuine soul.I would like to apologize to the JRPG enthusiasts on this board, I've written off the genre for too long.
>>12189028FFVI is the first good game in the series, and FFIX is the last one.FFXII and FFT are decent games, but not really a part of the series. Another honorable mention offshoot is Vagrant Story.
>>12189308The PS1 version, eh? I suppose if you already have it on hand, it's decent enough. I played through it many years ago myself. Wouldn't do it again, though, due to the additional loading times every time you open the menu, and when you get into a battle (though Chrono Trigger was way worse in this respect IIRC).
>>12189028i played FF3 on DS as a teenager,it was the first final fantasy i owned.
>>12189315yeah the load times are pretty shit but I just can't be asked to dig out the wii I emulate snes games outta storageI do wonder how the fuck square bungled the load times so bad. This was ported after 7 right? They should have a good handle on loading from disc by this point.
>>12188682>he boughted the shitty ps1 portsoh god no>The music, the characters, the backgrounds, the city of midgar and the wider world you exploreFF8 and 9 are just as soulful though they fall off story wise toward the end (FF8 in particular feels rushed) compared to FF7. FF8 combat systems are cool but very feast or famine depending how you play. Still my favorite FF in term of music and environment so I highly recommend it.
>>12189349Its funny to hear FF8 felt rushed when they ripped most of the staff off of Xenogears to work on FF8
>>12188906This is a general problem with most games in the franchise. In FF1 you don't get the cool spells or feel powerful on your fighters until you upgrade your class, and the monk's upgrade is useless, and all of that happens pretty late. In FF2 and the ones with Job Systems (FF3/FF5), you either have to grind to get the stuff you want early, or deal with not having access to anything you want until the end of the game. FF6 dodges most of these problems, but you won't be customizing your characters much till the second half of the game. 7 locks the coolest materia behind subquest bullshit or extreme late game. 8 locks the best abilities/commands behind rare/late game GFs, though at least you can take advantage of the drawing/binding system to do some fun stuff early on. 9 also dodges this problem, but again, limited customization.>>121893086 is a good game to play next, but you're going to have a bit less flexibility in your character builds than you did in 7. If you want something more flexible after that, check out 5, 8, or Tactics. You can really build the characters into whatever you want in those. One tip for FF6 that doesn't as much apply to the rest of the franchise. All the characters in 6 have some core gimmick or gameplay mechanic, and often times it's better to use that to attack than it is to use traditional magic or summons. A lot of these are powered up, augmented, or get new abilities from certain character specific items and events. So whichever characters you end up using, make sure you get all the stuff/play their whole storyline. You can beat the game much more smoothly and with less grinding this way than you can just grinding forever and teaching everyone Ultima.
>>12189356i mean all things considered it's incredible how they pumped FF8 and 9 so fast after 7 and they still feel like complete games but you can tell FF8 systems had not been extensively tested and they clearly tried to bite more than they could chew with the squall/laguna concurrent narrative, forcing them to do an enormous cut of laguna's travel to ishtar, uprising against adel and ascension as president. adel herself was extremely under cooked
>>12188682if you haven't played Chrono Trigger yet play that
>>12188682Soak in the silence for a few weeks (or months) then play what interests you next.
>>12189362>8>flexibleThere's no builds in 8 lol, it's junctioning all your farmed magic
>>12188682Glad you liked it anon, it's an amazing game. I got filter'd hard by 8 and am thinking about skipping it and going straight to 9
>>12188959Me and you would get along IRL
>>12188959>exploration/secrets wise, the best is VIyeah there was always something to discover.
>>12188949But he's fucking right
>>12188682i never played Final Fantasy 7 because i hadn't played the previous six (6) Final Fantasies and I assumed it was a series instead of anthology, because they're numbered.I also didn't play Final Fantasy tactics because I assumed it was an interactive tutorial for Final Fantasy. Like it's tactics for playing Final Fantasy. DAE?
>>12189471i did eventually play XIII (13) and i enjoyed it :-)
>>12189474I played all games before but 13 was too much for me. It was one of the first game that I felt like I have no obligation to play all, it it feels like joyless work, don't do it. I haven't played 15 either. Fuck this series.
>121889290/10 bait
>>12189478i found 13 to be a fun challenge. I wish I'd understood JRPGs better at the time and fled most battles so i was forced to not entirely ignore the weapon upgrade system
>>12188929The people hated him for he spoke the truth. FF8 is the worst game I've ever played and that's coming from a Sonic fan.
>>12189416absolute retard.
>>12189497>and that's coming from a Sonic fan.I've played through Drakengard 2 three times to get the endings, have beaten a bunch of really bad /vr/ FROMsoft games, got the best endings in almost all of the Game Gear Sonic entries, have beaten all of the console Valis games, etc and I still couldn't handle FF8. I find it to be really weird because even normalfags who get filtered by 2D FF games including 6 still more often than not say that 8 is great but I just can't man. I don't want to say that FF8 has objectively bad gameplay because once again it seems like unlike FF2 (which I'm kinda a fan of by the way) for example most people actually enjoy the game but it's one of those games that no matter how hard I try I just don't get
>>12188756this and then if you want an older one try 5 and if you want a newer one try 9
R + U
>>12189683Man I wanna titfuck her.
>>12189416Just... fuck.
>>12189028>skipped ff3 and gave us ludo trigger insteadthey did us all a massive favor. thank you squaresoft
