You ask people if they want Evil Ryu back and they will tell you we already have enough of that archetype, that he's a lazy design and so on, but if you release Evil Ryu you will see everyone online and their mothers playing him. Same with MK ninjas, everyone complains but if Ed Boon announces a new ninja (wasn't there a pink one recently?) everyone will be hyped.

Meanwhile, Japan with their anime-like plots will say they were killed BUT immediately returned as some kind of evil input-reading super boss. Certain the only reason the new guy is still around is because the VA was adamant about keeping the character alive and cultivated some semblance of a personality via shitposting. If left to capcom he'd have been dust after his introduction in 5. KoF and SNK may have had its ups and downs but they were never afraid to swap protags every few games and keep them around.
