Quake III had much smoother movement and better gunplay but UT was impressive for the sheer amount of weapons and modifiers. It was jankier but more fun.

Quake is great but I always preferred Unreal.

The lineage of Unreal Tournament leads to Fortnite, while Quake's connects to Half-Life, Medal of Honor, Team Fortress 2, and Call of Duty. Quake came out on top, leaving Unreal troons on suicide watch.

This is disingenuous at best. While you're right on the Quake front you're leaving out the rest of Unreal's lineage which includes games like Deus Ex, Tribes, Brothers in Arms, Killing Floor, Bioshock and so on. Both were successful in their own right, the only losers were forgotten to time.

id Software
>Celebrates Quake each year with QuakeCon, a massive annual event so big that Bethesda heavily supports and expands it.
>id acknowledges issues with Quake Champions (a hybrid of id Tech and Saber Interactive's engine, not pure id Tech) but keeps it free-to-play and updated on life support, including esports like Quake Pro League.
>Keeps Quake Live playable and available for purchase on Steam (and formerly free for prior players), despite its age.
>id gave away for free the remastered versions of Quake, Quake II, Doom, Doom II, Doom 3, and more, made by Nightdive, to anyone who owned the originals.
>Allows purchase and play of all its games, including classics like Doom 64 (Quake 64 included in Quake) on GOG, Steam, and Microsoft Store.
>Licenses id Tech selectively to capable studios (post-acquisition, limited internally to ZeniMax/Bethesda projects), avoiding resource drain on support.
>id Software knows that the engine is the heart and soul of the game.

Epic Gayms
>Has no dedicated convention or events celebrating Unreal Tournament or its legacy
>Work on the UT reboot was put on hold in 2018 to focus on Fortnite instead.
>Sold Gears of War to Microsoft in 2014; original Epic titles unavailable on EGS.
>Delisted nearly all old Unreal Tournament and Unreal games from Steam, GOG, and other stores in 2022 (servers shut down; a promised UT3 "X" revival quietly canceled).
>Makes classic Epic games hard to access legally on major platforms; prioritizes Fortnite revenue over legacy preservation.
>Licenses Unreal Engine broadly to any sector for revenue, bloating it into a general-purpose tool.

Yes, Unreal Tournament came out on top, and its legacy far surpasses Quake's. The only studio that respects and continues to update their games like id Software is VALVe: Both are keeping Quake Champions and Team Fortress 2 on life support instead of shutting them down like Epic did with Unreal Tournament.

You need a commercial license to publish your id Tech game, especially on consoles. On PC, you can experiment with it freely, but if you plan to release the game, you could either open source it or request a license from id Software and demonstrate your capability to handle it properly.

quake has the better movement, there is a reason quake always had a big community centered around it. be it speedruns or stuff like defrag. ut tried copying it wth their retarded dashes but fell flat since it felt like shit. even one cuck lead designer cliff once said they never achieved what quake did with their movement. acceleration is part of what makes it feel good and they regret not going for that. having said that ut has the better soundtrack.

>>
>>12206194
Just like Quake 64 (Midway), Enemy Territory: Quake Wars (Splash Damage), and Quake Champions (Saber), id Software has acknowledged and celebrates them.
What does Epic Games do about Unreal Tournament? They play dumb as if that franchise didn't exist and do everything they can to erase that part of their legacy.
If they were people, Epic would be a weak zoomer femboy ashamed of its race, and id Software a Gen X Chad proud of himself and his culture.
