>On January 15, 1997, it was announced that development had been moved to the PlayStation. By the next day, both stock in Sony and Enix rose significantly in Japan
> In turn, the move to the PlayStation was described as a "semi-crisis situation" for Nintendo, with Japanese stock analysts and industry observers losing faith in the long-term viability of the Nintendo 64 line
>By 2000, Dragon Quest VII was predicted to be so successful in Japan that it would "create a 50 billion yen effect on the Japanese economy", said research firm DIHS
>Before its release, it was ranked as the most wanted game in Japan and Square, knowing about Dragon Quest VII's release, moved Final Fantasy IX to come out on a later date
>Became the best selling game on PS1 in japan despite it's extremely late release

Prolly DQ8 when it comes to retro, the whole "Nintendo is in trouble cuz they don't have FF or DQ" was a bit overblown considering that they still got DQ games on the GBC (who also sold pretty well) and they where rolling on the money Pokemon was bringing.
Another one would be FF8 who sold like 2.5M units on the first week or something, record wasn't broke until DQ8 came along and then DQ8 record was broken by DQ9, who's record was broken by Splatoon 3 or some shit.
>>
>>12202925
imagine waiting all that time, getting 3 incredible FF games, thinking dqVII will be a masterpiece, then you finally play it and you get.... that.
>>
>>12203032
And yet Japan loved it
>>
>>12203025
DQ7 actually sold more than DQ8

4170000 for DQ7
4000000 for DQ8

DQ7 is still the best selling home console dragon quest game in japan
>>
>>12203032
Japanese DQ fans didn't want the superproduction FF style

>the team was also initially reluctant to include CG movies and cinematics due to letters written to Enix by fans fearing that doing so would change the overall feeling of the series.
>>
this game really rugpulled me with a really interesting 3/4 hour intro followed by a 100 hour treasure hunt.
>>
>>12202925
Were they disappointed? I was extremely disappointed by VII after playing III in my GBC.

I was expecting another semi open jrpg with focus on exploration and not story and I got the most linear game in existence with a lot melodrama bullshit stories you are forced to sit through with little input.
>>
>>12203056
Well it was ranked 9th best game of all time by famitsu reader in 2006 si i guess no
>>
>>12202925
80 hours of nothing
>>
>>12202925
DQVII was so mid, they really didn't use the full power of ps1
>>
>>12203036
Then why did they demake it casually twice?
>>
>>12206348
Oh believe me they used the 650MB of CD-ROM data
>>
>>12203056
It's Dragon Quest, nips are genetically incapable of not loving it.
>>
>>12206367
lol
>>
Is DQ7 really that bad
>>
>>12206454
It's a lot of people's favorite so it can't be. It's undeniably slow though.
>>
>>12206350
Haven't you heard? That's precisely what modern devs and gamers do when they like a game.
>>
>>12206454
It's the most divisive game in the series. I guess it depends on what you're looking for in DQ, if you want a fast "go wherever you want" RPG with minimal story like the early ones on NES you're going to hate it. To enjoy it you have to really take your time and immerse yourself in the world and characters. The story unfolds through mostly optional dialogue, so you should always talk to everyone, listen to what your party has to say about it, and then do it again after every plot progression. By not playing like this and just rushing through mandatory events you're gonna miss 98% of the games script. If that sounds horrible to you don't even bother.
>>
>>12206454
It's the polar opposite of what the series was up until that point. Instead of one big world that you adventure through and hear hints from NPCs it's now a bunch of small disconnected episodes for 80 hours (disc 1). Villages were small breaks between dungeons and fighting in previous games but 7 flips it to spending all your time talking to NPCs about whatever bad shit is happening in their village and eventually you get a small dungeon break before more talking. You can skip all the talking of course but then you won't understand shit about what's happening.

japs are braindead npcs that eat the slowest burn grindfests with boring ass storylines, must be their cultural programming
>>
>>12203050
And then they called the CGI cutscenes of the dancers a "horror movie".
>>
sometimes I think about the guy who lived with his robot. It wasnt dramatic or anything but what a sad end. I don't just feel sorry for him but his robot too.
>>
>>12207189
He was a sigma that was literally ahead of his time
>>
>>12206921
That sounds like a tedious waste of time. A proto-moviegame.
>>
>>12207034
DQ was already going that direction as early as 4, limiting exploration via the keys, transportation methods, etc., to keep you locked into the storyline more and more with each game.
>>
>>12202925
I really like the game but Maribel was more tsun than dere for my liking.
>>
>>12202925
It strangely has the least eye-catching designs that Toriyama came up with for the series IMO. I'm banking that it will be a good game eventually, PS1 JRPGs always deliver something worth to at least look at.
I'm still interested enough in playing it eventually. I'm really enjoying DQ5 so far.
>inb4 seething contrarians start shit about DQ5 success.
>>
>>12207431
Idk why he thought hobo link was a good main character design
>>
>>12207738
Zelda is a popular series
>>
>>12207431
The designs are great, some of my favorites. The main characters aren't supposed to feel like legendary heroes like in past games, they're just a group of kids who snuck where the adults told them not to looking for adventure.
>>
>>12207857
Bascially, The Goonies if it was an 80+-hour RPG.
>>
I don't understand Japan's obsession with JRPGs...
>>
>>12208241
They are fun and you don't have to read a manual before playing them.
>>
I can't beat the thieves after you get the classes.
>>
>>12202925
This was the first JRPG I really loved. I have no idea why I begged for it at Kmart that one day since I had never played a DQ before, but goddamn am I glad I did.

>>12207189
Why won't he eat the soup, bro?
>>
>>12203056
>he most linear game in existence with a lot melodrama bullshit stories you are forced to sit through with little input.
That's what Japan loves. They want their hands held and be led through a linear game. They don't care for open world exploring.
>>
>>12210426
How then was the first game a success?
>>
>>12210516
The Famicom generation was just more based than psx hikkimories
>>
>>12207194
It is, from what ive heard its awful in some aspects, but its got his good things, they dont mega bash it for a reason
>>
>>12206921
Your pic is lacking context. It's the entire game script for DQ7, and remember that the Japanese language can fit more text in smaller spaces. That's a ton of text.
>>
>>12213249
It didn't feel that big though
>>
>>12214031
that's what she said hue hue
