I love this game
It's a fun ass game, looking back the only gripe I have, is how much better the street based skaters are for points.Granted as an old fag who skated, I was always a street fan over vert. But a good manual > 900 on points.
It's a bit of a downgrade not being able to do manuals, but at least the goal scores aren't too high if you're trying to unlock everything. And it's nice to revisit the old maps.
>>12205303the THPS games didn't really give vert anything worthwhile until 4, when you could spine transfer, revert into manual, and balance lip tricks like grinds.
>>12205294I remember getting it for Christmas in 1999 and playing the absolute shit out of it all day, even taking my PS1 to my grandparent's for the few hours we were there for dinner so I could continue playing it. Then getting my 16yo ass drunk at my mate's house in the evening and coming home to continue playing it into the early hours
Anyone who says THPS1 aged poorly is a faggot. Is it primitive? Sure. But "aged poorly" implies that the later games made this one feel useless, which is untrue. The fundamental gameplay is still fun, in spite of what's possible in the later installments, and that's all that matters. You can still come back to this and enjoy it for what it is.
>>12205904>Anyone who says THPS1 aged poorly is a faggot.i guess if youre some newfag who had only played the later ones, going back and not being able to manual would likely be jarring. the downhill levels might be confusing.but i also liked that about it. it was much harder to get infini-lines going in 1. without mannys, your lines never ended up being you rolling slowly over in some corner of flat, popping fagflips and switching to nose ad infinitum. once manuals came in, that became a major mechanic/playstyle nothing wrong with that style of sk8ng irl desu. but in vidya? i always felt it a bit too cheesey and lamebut thats the thing that neversoft did that was so brilliant. they kept doing something like that, adding in a new autism or two, every single game, continually building on the complexity>reverts>no complys>wallrides>wallplants>grind change>getting off board>climbingthey just rationed out all of their ideas and managed to make a successful vidya franchise in a way that idk if its ever happened since. they made the same game over and over again for yrs, but theyre literally all different somehow. its actually crazy how long it took to jump the shark considering how many classic games they made. even when they were actively trying to jump the shark, they had to get into the peripheral meme-controller market to rly fuck up bigly.
THPS 1 and 2 feel like they gave you way too little time. If you want to high score tapes then you gotta just spam moves and grinding on different rails like a spaz, otherwise you'll never get enough in the 50 seconds they give you.
They should have made THUG for ps1 too
>>12206030if you really want to break it down, the THPS franchise was only 'good' for about six years. the series was annual until 2007 or 2008, I forget. Pro Skater 1-4, UG, UG2, and maybe American Wasteland. and a lot of people would debate whether the latter two are good.
>>12206038never would've been able to stuff those missions and levels onto a PS1 disc. they already had to cut a lot of corners to get THPS4 on there, to the point it's not really the same game. Proving Ground on the DS is made in the old Pro Skater PS1 engine, and plays like them. underrated port
>>12206030>weed AIslopSkaters, everyone.
Tony 1, 2 and 3 will always be the best for me. Once 4 decided to change the formula I lost a lot of interest. Not because of the losses of the timer and the compactness of the levels necessarily but because it made most of the missions really fucking lame. Doing 40 kickflips in the order listed on screen isn't fucking fun. Hitting a score requirement in a tiny portion of a level that only has a single halfpipe isn't fucking fun. 4 and the games after are full of just bullshit throwaway missions like these. That and how big the levels got just felt like they were missing the point of the original trilogy, or were just ignoring it in order to make things feel fresh. I dont hate them or anything, I think THUG1 is good for what it is, but it doesn't even come close to the originals to me.Also just wanna say the Dreamcast ports of 1 and 2 are the best and are underrated.
>>12205660>>12205904THPS1 has the best high score goals because you actually need to find good lines and use special moves instead of deleting the level design with manuals and reverts.
>>12206126>zoomer cant into shoopsprolly cant kickflip eitherfag
I believe holding up+right and circle was Rocket Air which was worth the most points besides a Special
>>12206095>if you really want to break it down, the THPS franchise was only 'good' for about six years. the series was annual until 2007 or 2008thats still a crazy streak no matter how you slice itesp given how the games all still feel different. its not like madden or cowadoody, where it was literally the same exact game every year.>and a lot of people would debate whether the latter two are good.and those were the ones where i was saying they were actively trying to jump the shark. still perfectly playable. it was just, ya know, like the tenth time they had been stuck making the same game. pretty clear the devs were over it by then and wanted to just kill the series. and the fans were getting to that same point as well then skate happened, so the series just became redundant
>>12205904thps1's framerate makes it borderline unplayable on ps1; it makes several objectives a crapshoot
>>12206986literal 8yos used to 100% this game in an evening at sleepoversgit gud
good soundtrack, I think I like every song between the first 2 games
>>12206986200% overclock in retroarch or dreamycasta, mate. no excuses
>>12205904I still think that the strongest titles in the series are 1, 3 and THUG. 1 sets the foundation and it's flawless in its execution. The worst thing I have to say about it is that Downhill Jam isn't a fun level and I never liked Burnside either, felt way too small. 2's issue is that the addition of the manuals heavily lean the game towards manual+rails, everything else kind of falls to the side. 3's reverts fix the issue so now there's theoretically no limit to your combos. 4 experiments with a more free roam approach but still feels relatively tied down while THUG takes that freeroam to its logical next step of making it a more character driven adventure.
>>12205294it's unplayable coming from 3 and onward
>>12206986My little chromebook runs the dreamcast ports of 1 and 2 (60fps) damn near perfect using the flycast core through retroarch plus for android. You don't need to play the original PS1 version anymore, especially if you've beaten career mode with all golds with all skaters many times in the past. (Private Carrerra has no ending.)
>>12209201more like gaybook
>>12208814I always did a special rail trick for a long time, flipped in and out of rails and manuals for multipliers, and then launch off a ramp with a special grab for a massive score. usually nets 200k
>>12206037You're supposed to practice, that's 99% of skateboarding
>>12206037the only ones that ever gave me trouble were ones like the 'drain the fountain' at Philly because the gap to get onto the roof is real finicky for certain characters, or the SKATE letters at Downhill because if you miss one you have to start the level over because of how it's designed.
>>12214521I had way more trouble doing a misty flip at kona than draining the fountain in philly, it's probably a practice issue. I could get consistent at the misty flip at kona if I practiced much like if you practiced tricking before the rail before the jump in philly
>>12214541sure you can do anything with practise, that doesn't negate my point. at least with PS4, I don't remember there being a time limit on that mission. as a kid, I remember the snake run slalom being more of a pain.
>>12214553it kind of does though. the game is tricky and your skill improves with practice, I played 2 more than 4 which is why I'm better at 2 than 4. the plywood coaster in san fran is also way harder
>>12214557by that logic nothing is difficult because you can "just git gud".
>>12214565we aren't just saying "games is be the hard times" though, we were comparing 1&2 vs newer entries. I'd say 4 is the hardest, but as I said earlier it's entirely subjective relative to the amount of practice you put in. in that sense you are right, no games are hard after you practice them enough (barring actually random games like roulette etc)
>>12214572the anon I originally responded to simply said he thought the time limits were too short because he struggles to get the score requirements. I responded with I only really struggle with the finicky gaps because a lot of them require a certain level of air/ollie stat to actually get to, and/or precise jumps that if you miss cost you a lot of time.
>>12214576his issue is bad score multipliers, you can clear the required score within the first minute by boosting the multiplier flipping in and out of manuals and rails then nailing a special move at the right time to maximize score; practice etc... your issue is putting stats in air when you should be maxing ollie and speed first, then manual and rail, then air and hangtime. that is more of an experimentation thing which comes with practiceI've been replaying 2 on PSX in case you couldn't tell
>>12214621>your issueI've beaten the games dozens of times, you're not speaking to someone who is struggling to clear the games in 2025. I was speaking of my experiences as a child 20+ years ago.
>>12214641yes, games are hard when you've hardly played them. cmon now
>>12214645that's what the discussion was about, reminiscing about a childhood of playing THPS.
This is one of the best videos I’ve seen in a LONG time and although it is THPS related it can be applied to much more than the game. I implore you to watch it: https://youtu.be/wivEnuubViE
>>12206938Reverts and holding manuals have significant speed penalties.
>>12214729Nah I'm good thanks, I couldn't care less for some random persons opinion video. Plus the family guy reference in the corner adds to the cringe. I'll just play the games instead
>>12214658exactly>>12214013
>>12214896>>12214565
>>12214803If you play the new one you’re likely to be horrifically disappointed.
>>12214940I'd recommend going and playing the other games made by the THPS crew. Shaun Murray Wakeboarding, Shaun Palmer Snowboarding, Kelly Slater Surfing, Matt Hoffman BMX, and Travis Pastrana MotoX. I'm surprised they never made a MTB game
>>12214803Anon, you can stop insisting on yourself. It's cringe.
>>12205294A LOT of people do, the whole skateboarding thing missed me because I was not a urban kid and they don't work so well in fields and mountains and woods. It's like sportsball to me although I have a few of the genre, always preferred the snowboarding stuff that preceeded it like coolboarders
>>12205303>THPS1>manual
>>12215079You didn't really have to like skateboarding to like THPS. If you knew anyone who skated at the time they'd raise their noses and say it was fake skateboarding or the tricks are impossible. (2 & 3 have unlockable simulation mode to appease that mindset.)
>>12214949I have. And the Spider-Man game they did iirc.
>>12214729Watch this
>>12215312play SSX then. then Freekstyle. then Sled Storm. then the Amped series.
>>12215330then Dave Mirra. then Downhill Domination. then Aggressive Inline.
>>12215339I have played them all. I actually did aggressive online irl for years so I was hoping that game would be good but it wasn’t. I was disappointed.
>>12215349Cool Boarders, including the JP-exclusive ones.
>>12214940I was expecting that to be the case. In all honesty I probably won't for many years. I have a big back catalogue to go through, plus a child to rear so I'm not really interested in any new releases right now. When I get the time to recap my pvm I'll dig out the old hawk and his pals
>>12214953Kek thanks for confirmation
>>12215662Watch the video I linked in this thread. The 1 & 2 remake isn’t half as bad as the 3 & 4
>>12214916you've never skateboarded have you
>>12215349You haven't played Rolling, and don't tell me you have. I like it better than Aggressive Inline and I hope you do too.
>>12216357Kek no thanks, I think 95% of YouTube content is cringy gay shit and this looks like it fits the category. Video game essays are usually guaranteed to be cringe. I did play a bit of 1&2 remake and yeah it was okay
>>12216420post deck
