Within the beat em up genre that quickly went the way of the milkman in the face of more complex vs fighters, here we have the winning combination of Conan the Barbarian and Lord of the Rings inspiration wise in Golden Axe
>>12206730That's so hella wicked
>>12206730These games were very mediocre, even compared to other beat em ups of their time, but the atmosphere and OST carried them
>>12206730Fighting games are not 'more complex' than beat em ups. They also did not vanish as a result of fighting games; they were being produced at the same time for many years.
>golden axe>his axe is clearly aluminum
>>12206730I loved this as a kid and would replay it over and over doing I guess "1cc" runs, but I am completely inept at it trying to play it now. I have totally lost whatever mentality you need for beatums
>>12207039death adder has the golden axe. duh.
>>12206730>Lord of the RingsHow? And don't saw DORF.
>Axe Battler>uses a sword
>>12206730Might be silly but I love the little theme that played during the intermissions with the map, felt so mythical and like you were resting beside a fire or something. Never beaten it as a kid though.
>>12207838Don't you get carried by eagles at some pointThis is not LotR but a level on the back of a giant turtle isn't very Conan either
>>12206730>Within the beat em up genre that quickly went the way of the milkman in the face of more complex vs fightersBeat 'em ups didn't go anywhere, they just became 3D.
>>12207038The problem beat em ups had is that they let the player bypass interacting with the game mechanics by feeding in credits. Thus leading to complaints about the shallowness of the genre by the sort of people who do that. Shoot em ups never got that reputation, they made sure you knew you were playing the wrong way by wiping your score and eventually withholding the ending entirely if you feed, or just using checkpoints. Even thought you can play most shoot em ups just by feeding in credits until you get through just like a beat em up.
>>12208156That is absolutely true. Beat em ups should have had checkpoints as a rule, allowing immediate continues only in two player mode.SNES final fight sensibly makes you start the stage again if you game over, an actual improvement over the arcade version.
>uses a sword in-game>uses an axe in the cover>the axe is not even golden>the dwarf's axe isn't golden eitherholy false advertising
>>12207039>aluminumaluminium*
>>12208448It refers to the villain's axe
>>12206910>mediocre game carried by atmosphere and musicThat's the Sega Genesis's entire library in a nutshell
>>12208448True, but we didn't care bcuz ass is the source of life
>>12208486The fact that she shows more ass in the Genesis port than in the arcade original shows it's the superior version
>>12208156Literally how is that different than having continues.
>>12207838It's high fantasy crossed with sword and sorcery Lotr and Conan are the most iconic representation of those two genres, and the Golden Axe creators said that's what inspired the world they made
>>12207038>Fighting games are not 'more complex' than beat em ups.Literally the only complexity in a BEU at all is when they mimic fighting game inputs albeit simplified, such as SoR2 having simple combo chains and specials with inputs like SF or MK
>>12208876in a fighting game there are only two actors on a single plane that interact only with each other with one action at any given moment in a game where the only obstacle is the other character.Beat em ups have multiple actors on variable planes which act independently of one another, work with or against each other, and with or against the player. Beat em ups also have level designs, enemy placement, pacing, etc. They're more complex than fighting games.
>>12206730>see this in the arcade, the intro playing where some character gets beheaded>play it on the mega drive (yes, yuro), no beheading whatsoever in the game
>>12208959The beheading only happens in the Japanese version. Your arcade have an imported board?
>>12208948Beat up enemies are braindead ai that any five rear old can take on all at once. Like me as a kid beating them all on single player
>>12208982maybe..i saw it in italy
>>12208452Both are correct
>>12206730I don't care for the original Golden Axe much. 3 and The Revenge of Death Adder are pretty good though.
>>12206730That pit in the second-to-final level of the Genesis version is fucking bullshit. You really don't get anywhere else to practice jumping.
>>12208990Of course their AI is simple. If it was advanced you'd be fucked. As it is you get challenged because many different enemies, all with their own simple behaviours, all combine together to form tough obstacles that you have to deal with. It's great. What they don't do is cheat like fighting game AI has to.
>>12208876>>12208990t. another shitter with no clearsModern fighting sissies that dismiss bmups are just posers w/o real arcade culture.>>12208156Literally all 90s arcade game do this, the only reason you think shmups are different is because of its autistic community. Continues were just a way to milk kids and tourists, if you are the real deal you wouldn't creditfeed like a retard, bmups either delete your score or expose the continues you used, not to mention Capcom games have 1cc endings.
>>12211990No one cares about the score in a beat em up.
>>12208990>Beat up enemies are braindeadHahahaha, you don't know what the fuck you're talking about.
>>12212005Fuck off retard some and it's not the only way to play a game, that's tranny mentality
>>12212036Some do*
>>12212005>Not knowing when you're about to get an extend>Not experiencing the thrill of being on your last life and trying to get that extra 50k so you don't game overEven if you don't care about the high score table, most arcade games reward understanding the point system.
>>12206910>These games were very mediocre, even compared to other beat em ups of their time, but the atmosphere and OST carried themExactly, the gameplay is just decent, but the world is Conan with a touch of LotR, so it ends up being alluring or like zoomers say "soul"
>>12212005casuals don't
>>12208457>refers to the villain's axeirrc Gillius used a golden axe in the arcade version.
Play Golden Axe Myth and Golden Axe Returns
>>12211856I've also never failed to beat a beat em up when I was five
>>12208995If only North America and their former colony say it that way then they're out voted and wrong
>>12218023It's a ruling by the IUPAC
>>12215134nice dude, thanks
