Retro games so popular and well regarded it's shocking they haven't gotten a (likely terrible) high budget AAA remake yet, though it might only be a matter of time until it happens.

You just know it's gonna happen within the next 10 years

He says, when the DS version exists.

cheap port/remaster =/= high budget aaa remake

think resident evil and final fantasy 7
>>
>>12207970
Not shocking at all considering the current state of Square Enix.
Their budget is only enough to develop one AAA at a time, if Final Fantasy is being developed, then you won't see any Kingdom Hearts anytime soon, let alone a AAA remake of a 30 years old game that doesn't even have much of a fandom as /vr/ likes to believe.
>>
>>12207989
Not every gets that
>>
>>12208013
not OP but I'm pretty sure Chrono Trigger was considered reddit's favorite/best game ever, at least at some point
>>
>>12208028
15~20 years ago, sure.
>>
>>12207974
SOTN too while we're at it
>>
>>12207970
Earthbound
>>
>>12208013
We don't even get new Dragon Quests while they're focusing on Final Fantasy.
SE is borderline indie nowadays, would probably had gone under if wasn't for FF14 almost singlehanded keeping them alive for one decade.
>>
>>12208046
I'd be more interested in an Earthbound movie before a remake.
>>
>>12208067
just watch stranger things
>>
>>12207989
aside from 4, the re remakes are all superior to the originals
>>
>>12208317
sad bait
>>
>>12208028
Yeah, it's still beloved. They could put the SNES ROM on the Nintendo eshop with no enhancements or bonus material, and charge 40 bucks for it and it'd sell well.
>>
>>12208329
Honestly I don't disagree with him but I'm not a huge RE autist either.
>>
you won't get any more (You)s from me
>>
>>12207970
Squenix still has Yuji Horii and had Toriyama, while he was alive. They also seem to have a good relationship with Masato Kato. At any point they could've easily done a new Chrono game or a remaster, yet they didn't. I'm thinking either it was not as big of a success as the internet would have us believe, or the people in charge just don't want to do it for some weird reason. Maybe they feel like they would have to bring back people like Kato but don't want to, or maybe they just decided that it would be better to focus on a high budget remake of the other Horii + Toriyama RPG about kids doing time travel. It's definitely weird.
>>
>>12208356
Was chrono trigger as praised in Japan or was that just an American thing?
>>
>>12208365
that's what I'm wondering

found this in another /vr/ thread:
https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2025/03/chrono-triggers-lifetime-sales-have-now-surpassed-the-five-million-mark?utm_source=chatgpt.com
So the combined sales from all versions until now have reached 5 million. Meanwhile, the other time travel game by Horii and Toriyama, DQ7, sold 4 million on the psx alone and it's much more convenient to remake that one in my opinion since CT is a dormant franchise. It makes sense why CT is not a priority then since DQ7 and FF7 are probably where their focus is now outside of MMO stuff.
>>
Fuck all remakes
>>
>>12208418
There's good ones, but they are so rare that I'm pretty much down with the "no remakes" sentiment.
Also, people have been making soulless "Nintendo this man" Unreal mockups of CT for years. Fortunately, although Square is fine shitting on their legacy, they don't let Westerners do it like Sony and Capcom.
>>
>>12208418
We want young people to be able to enjoy these classics too. Games from the retro era have aged like shit and aren't as finely tuned as modern titles.
>>
>>12208496
If you play a remake you sure as fuck aren't enjoying a classic, sorry
>>
>>12208013
Very thematic for a game about time travel to have the length of a Back to the Future time jump between releases.
>>
>>12208414
So we have a group of superfans being super loud about a game that didn’t sell well.
>>
>>12207970
pretty hilarious they refuse to remake CT, FFV or FFVI but they will remake fucking live a live, saga slop, boring mana games and the sloggiest jrpg of all time dqvii TWICE
>>
>>12208639
dqvii is a masterpiece you would know if you played it faggot
>>
>>12208689
Yup. I bought the first remake and I'm buying the second remake too.
>>
It's so depressing that instead of remakes being a second chance for games that were not great but had the potential to be they are just bastardized versions of great classics
>>
>>12209907
>games that were not great but had the potential
Name them.
>>
>>12208083
No, that show sucks and has no funny or quirk.
My wife likes it and I can't sit through an episode with out playing on my phone.
>>
>>12210157
Ninja Gaiden 3.
They remade it with Razer Edge and it turned into a good game.

Not as great as NG1 and 2 but good enough to be fun.

Also Metroid 1.
Though Zero Mission changed drastically, it's also much superior to the original game.
>>
>>12208317
RE2 Remake is not superior to the original after the first area

RE3 Remake is inferior to the original in almost every way

RE1R is the only one that is better than the original game, though the original still has its charm.
>>
>>12210256
ST is just Earthbound for grownups desu
>>
wind waker hd for sure
>>
>>12208689
I played it for 60 fucking hours before I finally realized I can just play something actually worth my time instead.
>>
>>12210495
>RE1R
>better than the original game
Consider suicide
>>
It would be shite anyway. That SoM remake looked atrocious.
>>
>>12208418
pokemon HGSS is kino though
>>
>>12209907
blame renderware. cheap game engine license allows companies to push out ganes of whatever quality they want, relying on the brand power alone
>>
>>12210157
xenogears
vagrant story
dark savior
>>
>>12207970
I'm surprised they haven't (thankfully) tried to capitalize more on the Chrono series considering it was a formative experience for a whole generation of people.
>>
>>12215932
The thing you people don't get is when a company has a game or a particular IP that sells gangbusters, their previous ones' sales look like peanuts by comparison and considering current Square Enix's arrogance, Chrono NIGGER is no FF7 and doesn't have enough marketing milkage potential. It's too niche.
>>
>>12208634
Reminds me of F-Zerofags, among other fags and all they got after 20 years is a Battle Royal of the Snes game.
>>
>>12216000
chrono cross is definitely ff7
it even took gameplay from ff games and inserted it into chrono trigger which was perfect before just not good for systems that can't load 3d objects without a 5 second loading screen
>>
>>12216497
>chrono cross is definitely ff7
I think the original ff7 alone outsold the whole Chrono franchise. It's like when people ask why Capcom is not doing Mega Man or why Konami is not doing Castlevania when we all know those franchises are irrelevant for today's standards. Investors would be mad at companies focusing on those unless it's a classic collection here, pixel remaster there, these kinds of things.
