The respawning enemies and level design really kill this game, even though I really wanted to see more (the opening cutscene and bayou are amazing setup just like I remember, and then you meet Jaunty and then you think you're going to have an amazing time), I had to refund it. "Asshole of the universe" indeed.
>>
You got filtered. It's a amazing game. Enemies only respawn on level change.
>>
>>12208030
This is a game with backtracking so level changes are invariably going to happen. It's made worse when you want to talk to Nettie and Jaunty to hear some flavor dialogue.
>>
>>12208016
>The respawning enemies and level design really kill this game,
I mean, why the fuck would they not respawn?
>>
>>12208070
There's no benefit to them respawning like in SOTN or Dark Souls.
>>
Here's an example of why it sucks: Early on, you can make a shortcut bridge rope from Jaunty. Convenient right?

Except the shitty little zombies have a ranged attack that will knock you off the bridge rope.

If the enemies stayed dead, this wouldn't be a problem.

Enemies only respawn when you leave an area, and you have a weapon with infinite ammo as well. It's really not that big of an issue.

I've noticed for many many years that anyone talking about "level design" is 95% likely to be an idiot.

Also pretending Shadowman is a classic when this was one of its reviews on release.
>>
>>12208716
>Letting you reenter and further explore previously visited areas is a proven play mechanic of the genre. Shadow Man adopts this system then manages to screw it up by populating each level with a large number of enemies that are neither challenging nor fun to fight.
>The best that can be said about the battles is that they certainly are time consuming. Enemies lumber towards you or stand in place and shoot. Worse yet, all the enemies respawn (in exactly the same place) every time you enter a level, a huge discouragement to the sense of exploration the game should be working to promote.

What the fuck lol that's LITERALLY MY CRITIQUE AND ITS STILL FUCKING TRUE

And much like you, he didn't play very far, since the more dark souls you get in the game, the spawns for deadside change.

Gamespot's standards dipped but we're talking about a game from 2007. They had an amazing run from 1996-2007, which I could never say the same about most magazines or websites. Seriously, name one shitty game Gamespot glazed during that era.

It's a game with a lot of revisiting areas, how fun would it be if the back half of the game was just you running around empty levels? Your issue isn't the respawning enemies anyway, if >>12208168

Somebody said new enemies in the old areas get introduced. Why not keep the areas empty until the new enemies?

>You don't like the combat in the first place, so just stop playing it?

I was willing to put up with the bad combat for the story, but the respawning enemies really fucking sucks, and rerelease allows you to savescum, which I did just so I could talk to Nettie and Jaunty so the enemies wouldn't respawn, which reeks of bad design.
>>
>>12208139
What are you talking about? There were plenty of enemies that didn't respawn in OoT, you moron.
>>
This is easily solved by having the enemies respawn on a fixed timer rather than when you enter the level
>Kill enemy
>Leave level and come back
>Enemy is still dead and won't respawn for another 20 seconds
>>
>>12208016
Kill yourself, this is a fucking incredible game, still nothing else like it.
>>
op is a worthless faggot zoomoid, as usual
>>
OP played like an hour of this game and got filtered lmao. Respawning enemies is such a non issue. Once you've gone through a level you know where to go, just run past them faggot, it's not hard. Not only that but enemies get replaced and shuffled around later but again your secondary ass wouldn't know about it.

Is shadowman 2 good
>>
>>12210000
It is gold. It maintained a hardcore cult following for like 20 years for a reason and that's why it got a remake, probably the best remake I've ever seen actually. Anyway, kill yourself.

>>12210165
No. Shadow Man is incredibly unique, being a horror Zelda Metroidvania mashup. 2 has none of its soul. There's a few decent levels here and there but I wouldn't really recommend it unless you're super into the IP and very curious about it. The best thing to come out of 2 was the ridiculous marketing campaign acclaim did with the tombstones.

Because it was blasted onto every console they could get it on. So you either rented it or owned it on something.

Says the guy who posted Gamespot, which was giving games good reviews for years for companies that paid for their advertising.

>If you saw these faces, you knew you were in for a worthless review.
Here's a novel idea, try thinking for yourself.
>>
>>12210176
It got remastered, not a remake. But it is good. Some of the areas I wish weren't so labyrinthine though.

Yeah, because a generic multiplat would develop a hardcore following and people would keep talking about loving it for multiple decades to show there's enough interest for a remaster. Fucking retard.

>>12210489
You're right, it's damn extensive since they actually added entire cut levels, the option for Dreamcast water and both old and higher res textures, enhanced the controls, the original composer came back to do more music (he himself is a huge fan of the game) etc. Definitely nightdive's best work. Also I think it's fine for some of the areas to be like that since once you go through them you basically know what to do after. From a thematic point of view they fit since all of Deadside feels surreal, otherworldly and hostile.
>>
>level design

nigger if you can't even appreciate the based levels in this you're not qualified to talk about anything lmao
>>
>>12208139
Ocarina of Time doesn't have clunky controls and the respawning enemies are typically either passive enemies or conditional spawns. I also don't remember anything like hitscanners or getting machinegunned like a shmup in OoT.

Same mechanic, different execution.

I want to play this but unsure of which version to play? I would assume its better on Dreamcast but I've heard several people tell me its actually better on N64. Not interested in fucking around a bunch to get the old PC version up and running but from what I gather its the same as Dreamcast and I don't want my first experience to be the remaster either. Don't know enough about the game to decide which one to go with so some pros and cons would be nice.
>>

embarrassing sperg out
>>
>>12211221
>better on N64
Smells like Tendie bullshit
>>
>>12211221
N64 version is only good if you have the controller because the analog stick is actually quite good when the rubberband doesn't wear out. I never played the emulator but if you don't use a controller for the emulator you will be in for a bad time from clunky controls.
>>
>>12211231
From what I understand it's the original version of the game they were making first so I could see it maybe being the more pure experience. Go off on your tendie tyrade though.
>>
>>12211221
I would like to know this as well. I never had much interest in this game but this thread has kinda inspired me to give it a shot.

I’m leaning towards the PS1 version since that’s the easiest to emulate.
>>
Now I can't unsee it this is Zack from doa so shadowan wuz a spin off all along

That one is the worst, by far.
Just pirate the remaster, it has everything.
>>

Dreamcast. I don’t even know why you’d touch the N64 port. And DONT even think about playing the PS1 port. It’s the worst one.

idk sounds like the Dreamcast port isn't exactly great, and the N64 version actually looks pretty nice in some cases. Maybe I'll just play both.
>>
>>12211421
>>12211429
>worst one
What’s so bad about it?
>>
>>12211470
It runs at, not exaggerating, 10FPS and even dips from that, has significantly worse visuals. The main character doesn't even have his iconic glasses because they couldn't figure it out.
>>
>>12211504
Goddamn lmao, alright fair enough

Might give me a good reason to boot up my Dreamcast again. I still need to confirm if I have the kind that’ll run pirated games or not.
>>
>>12211457
There's no reason not to play the remaster. It just finishes the game and even has the option to turn off a bunch of the remaster stuff. The original game is literally unfinished to the point where some of the bosses were forced to share levels.
>>
>>12211843
You can't appreciate the good changes or know if there are any bad changes in a remake or remaster if you never played the original. I always play the original first unless its very specifically something like an ancient PC game that's too much of a pain in the ass to get working correctly.
>>
>>12211873
>You can't appreciate the good changes
I think you'd be able to appreciate two entire levels and like 3 new bosses being added. It's your life though, ganbare.

The best version is the remastered because it adds cut content, uncensored content and adds all the secrets from every console version. Not including high definition and modern resolution fixes.
