The Warriors is ultimately a better beat em up but Shaolin Monks is pretty solid compared to a lot of the competition (what little there is)Urban Reign is probably the better overall beat em up but it's coop is jank and you need insane hacks produced by a Russian to get it properly working.

its one of those games that people remember fondly more for playing with their friends/siblings rather than the game itself. its a dumb beat em up with an mk theme. it worked.

Most MK fans nowadays just buy the game to watch the story mode, customize their characters and play a bit of the single-player modes. Almost no one cares about the actual fighting game part seeing how many players are usually online compared to how much the games sell, and seeing the extremely low tournament attendance. On the other hand, a co-op action game would probably sell more to the current MK audience if it kept the same level of cinematics and was sold as a main game instead of a spin-off.
