Your honest thoughts on this game and its departure from the Pro Skater formula
>>
>>12210087
It was so fucking good. Made the old formula obsolete and outdated. I never went back.
>>
Is this the game where Tony kills Bam?
>>
when you're actually skating it's really good. everything else sucks, most goals are braindead easy "do 5 flips in a row" or "collect 5 dog poop", getting off your board sounds cool in theory but it just lowered the skill ceiling because now you can never bail. falls off hard after Vancouver
THUG2 and THAW in classic mode are better
>>
>>12210087
4 was the departure, and both it and thug suffer for it. honestly thug is worse because at least 4 had some interesting and difficult goals (skater specific stuff comes to mind)
nice to see classic mode in thug 2 at least
>>
>>12210087
I don't know, the goals were too wacky for my taste although I like UG2 more even though it was even more ridiculous.
>>
The game having a second ending when you beat it a second time was a stroke of genius, especially considering how satisfying said ending is. Otherwise it's an OK game, I just can't enjoy the way Tony Hawk games control after playing skate.

This thread is filled with casual THPS players and it's very apparent.

As opposed to professional tony hawks professional skateboarding video game athletes
>>
>>12210239
Unironically yes.
>>
>>12210236
Yes. I don't care about robot line autists who spent every hour doing weird physics glitches over their PS2 model.

I made a typo and thus my entire opinion has been invalidated but I ain't gonna delete the post in shame because fuck the police.

if you can't get a skater all gold on THPS2 within half an hour you're a casual
>>
>>12210087
It honestly felt more like a long tutorial than a single player campaign, felt rushed and lackluster compared to previous games and some games after it
>>
It's fine. Not amazing but still very good.
>>
>>12210087
probably my favorite tony hawk game. outside of the story it was basically a create your own tony hawk game with create-a-goals, create-a-level, etc.

i kinda do wish there was a way to share CaGs now that the servers for these games are gone. you could've downloaded characters, levels, goals, etc. from there.
>>
This game would've been kino if not for the vehicle missions shoehorned in with godawful physics
>>
>>12210168
4 was the peak. And it had Kona.
>>
>>12210087
a lot of the later levels especially are really weak, and it's focused too much on the vehicle gimmick. soundtrack was a step down from the previous games. story was fun.
>>
>>12210232
this but unironically. I legit couldn't go back to NFS or Midnight Club after I started playing GT
>>
>>12214997
I can skate the real thing any time I want, so nyeh. in fact, I just went there on Friday
>>
>>12215118
different because you can't do a super varial 900 mctwist off an abandoned building that collapsed into a halfpipe
>>
>>12215246
can't do that in THPS4's Kona either. it's a pretty accurate recreation of the park circa 2002, though smoothed and flattened out and they added some giant grassy field in the back for some reason. the funbox area was identical IRL until around 2015 or so, now it's got a new miniramp thing. they also dug up and reprofiled the kidney pool to make it more skatable. the wooden halfpipe is still there but it's haggard as shit

i feel like some liberties were taken with levels based on IRL skateparks. probably due to engine limitations.

skatopia for example has things like broken loops and a vertical bowl that ARE in the THUG2 level but are unfinished/half-built to look like QPs & half pipes.
>>
>>12215369
the changes were more to make it flow properly in the THPS engine. like, in reality, the Freestyle Bowl is sloped and the rim around it is more a shallow bank, whereas in THPS4 it's flat and has actual vert. the Pink Bowl IRL has no hard lip, whilst it does in THPS to make it obvious you can grind on it. they made the street/funbox area bigger too so you wouldn't go flying over everything.

Kona is the worst map, it's too realistic and bland for a thps game. Only the snake area is ok.
>>
Kona is cool, but it's not a good fit for THPS. I saw recently that people have figured out how to make custom maps in Skate 3, and have ported THPS1's Warehouse over.

I hope someone ports Kona over, I bet it'd play a lot better in Skate, with its (relatively) more realistic style.
>>
>>12215852
I'd rather actual Kona at that point.
>>
>>12210087
I enjoyed it at the time but I would rather play 4 over it. The levels are very small feeling and a lot of them aren't fun to me. The addition of vehicles was cooler on paper but didn't really make the game better. I think it's a decent game but overshadowed by the older versions because of nostalgia. I don't get nostalgic for UG.
If someone made a mod that you could skate in San Andreas that would be a lot of fun.

I was going to reply but you already lots.
>>
>>12214997
I agree, and it's the most challenging for several reasons and probably has the most variety for pure skating. I'm not talking about cars and shit.
>>
>>12215071
>soundtrack was a step down from the previous games
Wild. I can only see it as a worthy continuation at worst.
>>
>>12215118
You lucky bastard.
>>
>>12216356
It was the closest thing I could get to a 'sim' back in the day. I skated for over a decade.
>>
>>12210087
the only great tony hawk game imo. I mean the old ones were great too but theres no reason to play them over THUG.
>>

>formula
Thread hidden. I do not engage with video essayist "game design" threads.
>>
>>12216595
You just did, next time brother
>>
>>12215852
i don't know how much harder it would've been but i would've ported either the THUG2, THPSHD or THPS1+2 version of warehouse.

something about the model not matching the environment feels "off" to me. also i'm pretty sure it's not to scale with the player.
>>
It's the first one I extensively played so I'm biased towards it. Lots of memorable songs and my favorite levels.
>>
>>12216395
4 had certified classic skate punk groups like Agent Orange, Faction, JFA, and US Bombs, not to mention groups like Iron Maiden AC/DC Flogging Molly and the Sex Pistols. UG's isn't bad, but it definitely doesn't have the incredible batting average of 2 and 4.
>>
>>12210087
It's a little rough around the edges by modern standards. Everything that isn't skating, vehicles, on foot sections, the few auto-skitch sections, is just bad.
Goals just ending with no feedback, leading to snapping in and out of cutscenes the instant you complete them is pretty jarring. And the limited tools they had for dialogue, character animations and expository camera angles when starting and ending missions was underwhelming even for the time.

That said, they managed to tell a really compelling story and put together a mostly competent game despite all of that. And even for its flaws, none of them is enough to detract from the whole experience. It's still my favorite Tony Hawk game, even over THUG2. Which I didn't care for because it focuses even less on the core mechanics, and it has a story I actively dislike for putting the player out of focus and for turning Eric Sparrow into the butt of a bunch of shitty jokes. It doesn't really feel like a continuation of THUG to me.
>>
>>12216461
this but with THUG 2
