I wanted to make an unbiased N64 appreciation thread on here for a few reasons. The amount of people coming out of the woodwork lately to consolewar on here about it is absolutely ridiculous. If you actually like video games I think you would be able to enjoy a game no matter what system it was on as long as the game is good. Say what you want about Nintendo in the current day, I think they suck massive fucking cock and are the worst of the big 3 now(really everything is terrible now though), but we're on a board about retro games aka the best games. Can we just have a civil discussion about it for once? I think there are a lot of genuinely great games on this thing, most of them are exclusive too, the meme about there only being 10 good ones is kind of a massive load a shit I've discovered. I haven't had much experience with N64 since I didn't grow up with one and getting an original controller with a good analog stick and emulation being bad until pretty recently were big roadblocks for me. I got the NSO N64 controller and have been using Ares and finally for once everything works, looks, and feels like it should so I've been on a marathon of playing a lot of this stuff for the first time and I just can't stop. It's quickly becoming one of my favorite systems of all time.

Picrel is everything I've played in the past couple months and how I'd rank them. I've really thoroughly enjoyed almost everything I've played so far and there's still a lot of good stuff left I think. Not everything has to be a 10/10 to be considered a good game.

you beat 80 games in 2 months?
>I didnt beat them all
then why did think you possessed the ability to rank them?

I initially assumed the chart was serious, then I realized that the 'joke' was it seeming reasonable at first and then putting Goldeneye and then Mario 64 in among a bunch of trash. You could have used the thread to advocate for stuff like Space Station Silicon Valley, but no.
>>
I'm always surprised at how highly Pokemon Stadium is rated on 4chan. I remember being so disappointed with that game after waiting so long for it come out. When the most memorable aspect is the minigames it says a lot.

I was going to give some advice but then I saw SM64 was "C" and I realise it was an obvious troll list.

I just don't think Mario 64 is all that interesting or fun to play. Revolutionary for the time no doubt but I think just about everything that came after it is better.
>>12211132
Its really not a joke, its my genuine opinion lol theres plenty of lesser known stuff on there too if you looked
>>12211138
Its great if you like Pokemon battles on their own and also bring in your own team from one of the gameboy games. It has a lot of content and challenges to build specific teams for, its cool.

Heaven forbid I don't think Mario 64 is the best game ever made

I've been getting more into the N64 lately and for me it's mostly been a machine for FPS and third person action/adventure so far; with a hint of racing and platforming

>FPS
We all know the ones but special mention for TWINE

>action/adventure
I absolutely loved and obsessed over both Castlevanias, I replayed them many times, doing every possible thing on normal and hard difficulties. They're definitely my favourites on the system. Shadows of the Empire was great too. I also liked Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon and Duke Nukem Zero Hour.
Both BattleTanx as third person action games are also fun because of blowing shit up.

>hint of Racing
Only Beetle Adventure Racing and Ridger Racer 64 but I really enjoyed both. RR64 taught me to get good with an analog stick.

>hint of platforming
Goemon's Great Adventure is great, and so is Bomberman 64 if that counts as platforming. Currently going through Bomberman Hero.

I know the retarded console warriors that have been populating and polluting this board since mods gave up on the website are going to say that I'm just pretending to search and like 3rd party games, but in fact the only first party game I really enjoyed are OoT and Banjo & Kazooie. I hated Zelda MM though I forced myself to finish it, I dislike Mario 64, find SMK64 bland, and in Banjo & Tooie I forced myself to get 70 jiggies to beat the final boss but for the most part it was a miserable experience. So as you can see I'm in no hurry of trying all the other meme'd first party titles.

>>12211223
I thought C64 was really interesting but I'm not sure I'd say it was actually good. It has good ideas and I could see how with different level design it actually would've been really good. The best level was the villa, I think if the whole game was focused around getting keys and exploring the castle, kind of like Zelda or something, it would've been awesome. Instead it turns into a weird platformer in the second half and idk man lol. The development of the game and what it was supposed to be is more interesting than the final product.

I played a bit of Duke Zero Hour, unless I was missing something though there aren't any checkpoints and you can't make manual saves? It was just too difficult for me to make it very far and getting to the end of a level only to die and have to play the entire thing over was devastating. I did like it overall and I want to go back. Maybe I'll just savestate here and there or something.
Battletanx looks cool I'll have to check it out.
Beetle Adventure Racing I really didn't get the hype for. It was okay, it's playable, but nothing about it stands out for me.
Shadows of the Empire is probably next for me, apparently the Japanese version got translated back to English and its supposed to be a bit better so Im gonna check that one out. Im glad Im not the only one who doesn't care for Mario 64 lol.
>>
>>12211240
I just don't understand why its one of the higher regarded racing games on the system. Everyone parades it around like it's a hidden gem and I couldn't tell you why. It's not bad, but its pretty bland and doesn't have a whole lot going for it. It's fine. Maybe D tier is too harsh but I just didn't care for it.
>>
>>12211080
Yoshi's Story was great and I will not pretend otherwise.

>I played a bit of Duke Zero Hour, unless I was missing something though there aren't any checkpoints and you can't make manual saves?

I don't remember, you might be right, but I don't think it's a problem. There are usually Medpacks you can stash and use when necessary.

>Battletanx looks cool I'll have to check it out.

It's not great but it's fun for what it is, seeing how much destruction you can wreck in the levels is especially fun. The different control schemes, difficulty settings and game modes make it replayable. In the 2nd game you unlock more tanks too and switch them around at map start or when you die.

SotE is just great, definitely recommended >>12198403

Good thread, OP. If there's one console that's severely underappreciated, it's the N64.

>conker’s bad fur day
>not S tier
It’s the best game on the console.
>>
>>12211551
I really enjoyed it but I hated all of the shooting sections and found them to be pretty frustrating. I also just don't really understand why the game becomes a bunch of movie parodies in the second half, I didn't hate it for it or anything but it was pretty random and came off like they ran out of material or something. Still really liked the game though thats why its A tier.
>>
>>12211157
I have no problem with you thinking that it's hardly the best. I wouldn't put it in S tier either, and feel like it gets overpraised because it opens so strongly and gives the impression off the first few levels that it's going to be a super deep game that gets even more interesting as it goes along. But most of the levels end up feeling like hacked together beta material that shouldn't have made it into the final game, and it never makes deep use of most of your moveset. It's definitely inferior to Banjo. I'd also say that, while it's better than A Bug's Life, that's also an under recognized game that's better than the movie it's based off.

Pokemon Stadium games irk me, because it just shows how easily Nintendo could make a 'complete' Pokemon proper challenges, RPG mechanics and adventure all in one, but instead they deliberately snub you to sell the experience in seperate parts you pay for individually, and can do so because nobody else makes anything that does what Pokemon does.

This. We need some more Nintendo Switch discussions on here.

My main issue with it is the complete and utter lack of variety in the missions. Most of the stars in the game only involve you just going to a random point in the level and most of the time it isn't even challenging and doesn't have any kind of major obstacle or roadblock you need to overcome, hell a lot of times it doesn't even involve any kind of real platforming. Even though most of the bosses the game has are baby easy, I don't think it would have killed them to make one for each level just to spice things up a bit. They also could have just done more with things that already are in the game if adding any more bespoke content was a no go. They could have done so much more with all 3 of the power up caps, I don't think most people realize the iconic wing cap only even appears in 3 levels plus a bonus stage, and one of those levels doesn't even have a use for it at all. All of those times it shows up is just to collect some coins, why not design some other kind of challenge to utilize it in. Same with the invisibility and metal caps. All you ever do with the metal cap is sink to the bottom of some water and grab a star, why not make use of the invincibility it gives you in some way, or use it to kill a bunch of enemies quickly. Or make a shitty stealth section with the invisibility cap idk Im just spitballing here lol. How about a few more races with Koopa the Quick you only do that twice and those are probably the most fun missions in the game if you ask me. Literally anything besides just walking for a bit and getting a joyless star thats just sitting there and immediately going back into the level to walk a little bit further the next time and getting another one.

I also just don't like how Mario feels in this game, I think he controls a lot better in Sunshine but people don't like when I say that.
>>
>>12211852
I don't actually disagree with you in any way. You're criticisms are spot on and I also wish the game had been better in the ways you do. But putting it far below a ton of frankly gimmicky games doesn't do it justice, C just seems needlessly cruel to the merit it does have even if it had so much room for improvement.
Not making a squeal to Mario 64 on the 64 in the same style, but improved was a big mistake.

I agree that modern Nintendo is worse than I ever could have imagined them being even just 10 years ago, but N64 was my least favorite before the Switch. Besides Mario64, Smash, Kart, Star Fox, and Goldeneye there wasn’t anything that I found noteworthy on it back then, and only Mario64 has aged well. No, the Zeldas on it are not good games and I won’t pretend that they are just because of the name. It’s the only Nintendo console besides VB that has no hidden gems because there simply aren’t enough games for the good ones to remain hidden

I'm not too well versed in wrestling games, this was the first time I got into them and I had a blast with all of them. Couldn't really discern the quality between any of them if I'm being honest though I just blitzed through all of them in like a week.
