Nowadays, you have access to perhaps the single most streamlined software debugger ever in the form of Mesen, incredibly intricate and comprehensive documentation of even the most minute hardware details thanks to the Nesdev wiki, and in Aeon Genesis' case, 20 years of experience in how to manage these types of projects. Modern resources like these are the difference between a project taking a month and a project taking a year. Famicom hacking and development is a solved problem. In terms of tooling, the resources available for newer systems like the Saturn or Dreamcast is much more like the Famicom tools of 2005 than those of 2025. Moreover, newer systems are more complicated, and games on said systems are usually much longer. Hacking a Famicom game in 2025 is like fighting a war in the 1800s with modern technology.

I can't get any version of the rom to run on my 3ds. Tried virtuanes and 3 retroarch cores- really odd. I am now one of the very few people in history to have completed this game. It was pretty good. The encounter rate is just as absurd as you would expect from a Famicom RPG, the music is good, the graphics are great. It runs out of steam a little at the end but it's fine. Feels like if this came out back in the day and got a fan translation in the late 90's/early 2000's it would have a small dedicated following. It's more than exotic and quirky enough to earn it.
