It was once called the greatest first person shooter ever...
>>
>>12222236
No, it wasn't, but it should've.
The game is super cool and it is criminal that it is lesser known than either its sequel or even its prequel.

Dark Forces was better
>>

EU never canon
>>
Is this a good way to play the game now?

No, use DREAMM.

It's pretty neat but holy shit you are a rat in a maze

Jedi shit is boring.

Yep, it still is.
>>
great game, best of its series

So you can play vanilla, as God intended.

That’s hyperzoomerism. DF2 was as well if not more known than jk2 even after the latter came out. People compared the two all the time. It’s only been forgotten in the last decade or so because it ran like jank on modern PCs until devs fixed it for steam, and jk2/academy has somehow endured through online multiplayer on random third-party servers. I swear, the past really is a foreign country sometimes…
>>
>>12222248
It was briefly until Half-Life and Unreal

Dark forces 2 is just so memorable w its endlessly memeable but still campy fun cutscenes and some cool new additions to the EU. Really like Kyle it was so easy for them to create Han Solo knocks offs but they are really fun. Him and Dash Rendar were both extremely fun protags. Wish we had gotten more adventures w Dash. I’m guessing they did comics and books for him. I’ll have to look it up.
>>
>>12222963
No, it's not. It's a PC only action game in 1997 that wasn't made by iD Software, but still needed a fairly new system with hopefully supported hardware. That's niche as fuck.
Jedi Outcast and Jedi Academy became popular because they dropped in a whole different world (and had Heretic 2 based melee combat and acrobatics).
I adore DFII and MotS a lot, but they barely had a spotlight they deserved.

Just dropping in to say that Mysteries of the Sith sucks ass.

>"Best game ever." - PC Gamer
Was it justified?
>>
>>12224506
Video game journos have always had retarded takes. It is a good game though. Especially the sound design and use of big 3d spaces to create scale. Actual level design is kind of spotty and the graphics were ugly even at the time, though.
>>
>>12224506
You have to understand that this came out before ocarina of time.
>>
>>12224497
Yeah, nobody gave a fuck about DOOM nor Quake until they were ported to consoles.
>>
>>12224521
I forgot to mention I'm trans. Not sure if that matters.
>>
>>12224501
Perhaps if the only thing you were into was live action cutscenes. It was a decent mission pack.
>>12224523
Wrong. Doom and Quake are among the games non-IBM PC and console faggots desperately wanted to the point of settling for inferior and usually late versions.
On other hand, some of less mainstream games like Hexen are more known today because they had a console ports at the time. The same goes for the first Dark Forces as well by the way.
>>
This masterpiece was straight robbed by Half Life. Best shooter of the 90s hands down. Mogs Half Life so hard it isn't even funny.

>It was a decent mission pack.

It doubled down on the worst parts of JK2 gameplay. Levels are designed with a structure in which a new player takes part in combat for five minutes, then gets stuck on wayfinding for 20 minutes (20 if they are lucky). Once the hidden path forward is located, there is again a reward of 5 minutes of combat, directly followed by 20 minutes of being stuck. Rinse and repeat. Enemies don't respawn, so there's nothing to keep you amused while you're scrutinising a vast and empty chamber for the fifth time.

Some people describe this as "old-school PC shooter design," but I don't think it can be defended as such. Doom and Quake were never so frustrating with their mazes – it wasn't the standard of the time. Shadow Warrior's key-hunting is almost as frustrating, but this is usually not held to be one of that game's strong points. I believe MotS and Shadow Warrior were both rushed productions, so the constant roadblocks were likely just a way to pad those games.

>>12225564
I completed Hexen multiple times (the expansion too) and Shadow Warrior completely filtered me on the first level.
>>
>>12225579
Hexen gets much easier on replay once you realize that the switches are mostly set up logically and the auto-map will clue you into where the really well hidden ones are.

Vader, luke and boba fett were in multiplayer only.
>>
>>12225564
I never had problems with Shadow Warrior level design (which wasn't a rushed production, but rather a development hell with the game changing the direction after Duke3D success).
In all honesty, Redneck Rampage 1 was way worse in that regard.
Either way, this quirk of MotS is not a problem for me personally, as I love exploring the levels and consider enemies as an obstacle rather than a reward. It had quite a few memorable moments as well.
>>
>>12225887
My only big gripe with it is there are very large areas in the later maps that were clearly unfinished and meant for something else.

Fixed that for you. DF2 was always exploration first and action second.

The best shooters are always like this.

This game is too fast it gives me motion sickness
