I kind of don't give a shit about Id games.I respect them, but they feel more like engine demos than compelling video games. They do not have interest factor. Also, Daikatana is cooler than anything Id ever made.
Quake 1 was the last good iD game. Everything after that I don't blame ya. They don't make quality like they used to.
Doom's aesthetic didn't age well at all, it screams "what boomers think is cool". Heretic, Hexen, Quake look timeless.
>>12229830>games feel more like engine demoswell yeah, that was their entire business model.
>>12229839right, but I don't care about the games. I feel almost no compulsion to play them. The best thing about these games is they laid a groundwork for modding.I've never sat down and beat every level in any of these games. I maybe do the first episode, and get bored.
>>12229830Doom feels more like an engine demo? I'm sorry, are you fucking retarded?
>>12229849Yeah, it's just the same shit, once you have beat one level. Lots of brown corridors.I don't feel drawn into the adventure at all.
>>12229835skibidi bop yes yes
>>12229830They're fine games, revolutionary even, I'm just sick of the way people talk about them and how I have to constantly hear about Romero and Carmack and everyone inbetween "Oh man when Romero designed E1M1" like holy shit just shut the fuck up already I get it. Nobody else talks about other games like this, you don't hear about how Takashi Tezuka or whoever the fuck designed stage 32 in Mario World or something it's obnoxious and makes you sound like a pretentious retard. It's exclusively Id and Id adjacent games that make people go off like this for hours and I don't understand why.
>>12229857people talk about the "hidden tutorial" genius of SMB 1-1 all the time. but I agree its annoying
I can see from miles away OP is baiting the doom general postersDid you know that that thread had his own janitor? That's right, a janitor just for one thread. I don't know if he's still here since the takedown but he used to delete any negative post about Doom and ask the mods to warn you under the pretense of "flamewar"; though in this case of OP that would be correct.
>>12229854I mean boomers in the literal sense. I'm 30 years old. The Matrix aged magnificently. Doom did not.
>>12229915So if I said.>Doom? More like Gloom hahaha!I'd get a warning? Kinda sad ngl.
>>12229830this, they don't hold a candle to the last of us
>>12229857>I have to constantly hear about Romero and CarmackI agree about Romero, but Carmack is a real skilled programmer who developed something new from almost nothing (a single paper about BSP). And then he kept improving it for years and making something new. There are not many people who can do that, less than a hundred on the whole planet I'd say.
As if Carmack's comment on story wasn't a dead giveaway.
>>12229857>Nobody else talks about other games like thisi see way more jerking off about shit like mario 1's mushroom going the opposite direction you are facing being the pinnacle of game design and why miyamoto should win the lifetime achievement award in gaem design
>>12230075For games gameplay is more important than anything else, he is right about that.
>>12229849Yes. It's incredibly repetitive and has zero depth. Not as much of a demo as Wolf3D was though.
>>12230460Carmack's games are very skimpy on gameplay mechanics. Doom 3 was even a regression from 1 and 2 and Quake sequels, gameplay wise.
>>12229830Valve, Bungie, 3D Realms, LGS, Monolith mog them
>>12230562yeah but still: google Cacowards, get yourself a copy of GZDoom or PRBoom-plus and get crackin' (need the original Wad files tho.shouldn't be difficult)
>>12229830>Also, Daikatana is cooler than anything Id ever made.
>>12229835Quake is brown and boring
>>12230640Its color palette is trash but the enemies and architecture hold up really well. They feel like they belong to a real believable world. Unlike Doom which feels like an incoherent mishmash of random ideas.
>>12229830this feels like such myopic and revisionist view of games at the timewolfenstein gave you the sort of gameplay you couldn't find anywhere at the time, let alone a machine where you could barely run text processorsdoom was so far ahead of everything else being done at the time. and though it's not my particular cup of tea, it's so good, in fact, that people are still playing it and enjoying it to this day, not just as a sort of nostalgic throwback or a curiosityand quake (my cup of tea) is a complete fucking mess that's still really fun to play. calling it just a demo is insane. there would be no engine to demos if the games didn't stand on their own. and they didquake 3 is probably when you can start calling id's games engine demos. it was clear where carmack's priorities were and with romero and hall gone that was the only drive leftand it's still fucking awesome and being played to this daygo figure
super mario bros is just a sidescrolling tech demo
>>12230640you're brown and boring
>>12230767>wolfenstein gave you the sort of gameplay you couldn't find anywhere at the time, let alone a machine where you could barely run text processorsI seem to remember a whole lot of "it's nice but it's not great" chat around Wolf3D at the time. Sure, maybe it was salty amiga/st owners, being a bong there were a lot of them around, but my distinct impression was that Wolf was not universally acclaimed. Boring level design, "who has the bigger gun" determined the winner in fights, RNG being the deciding factor in how much damage you take, boring grind to find secrets, every boss being just a damage sponge, etc. etc.Doom was praised much more though.
>>12230791Your butthole is brown and boring.
>>12229830They got the same criticism in I think PC Zone back in the nineties after better games using same or modified engine followed Quake 1 and 2.
>>12229832Quake 1 was shit compared to Doom 1/2. The awkward transition to janky 3D models/animations was jarring.
>>12231035It’s funny when you bring poppers : )
>>12231096great games like sin and daikatana and kingpin
>>12230470Original Dooms are fine in terms of available mechanics. Community wads basically distilled the game to its prime components - movement, weapons and enemy rosters, and combined them in various ways. Not many other games have that, only a couple dozens I think.
>>12229830Quake and later were essentially tech demos and / or multiplayers,W3D and Doom had at least some kind of progressive gameplay linked with a plot. Quake 4 was like this too.
>>12229835>Quake's aesthetic didn't age well at all, it screams "what boomers think is cool". Heretic, Hexen, Doom look timeless. There I fixed it. Back in my day, bait used to be believable.
>>12229830>they feel more like engine demos than compelling video gamesPeople still play Doom and Quake regularly 30 fucking years later.
>>12229915No really though. No one ever has this conversation. They're just not that appealing as games.>well John Carmack pioneered the-Sure sure. He's a very smart man. I have never sat down and played all of Wolfenstein 3D, and I'm not going to. It's kind of boring.
>>12230619It is. It's an awesome cyberpunk time travel adventure, with real characters and a plot. The fact that it's kind of a bad game, doesn't negate from that.
>>12229830I 100% don't give a shit about the hot take of a faggot who has never made anything cooler than Daikatana.
>>12229915Because people there want to talk about the game and all the mods for it. They don't want some b***n subhuman on a jeetdroid coming in and shitting all over the place. We already have enough of that behavior in every Nintendo thread in the past 3 months.
>>12229851>lots of brown corridorsRetard trying to LARP like he played the game, lmao>>12230468It's a shooter, you shoot things.
