I kind of don't give a shit about Id games.
I respect them, but they feel more like engine demos than compelling video games.
They do not have interest factor.
Also, Daikatana is cooler than anything Id ever made.

Quake 1 was the last good iD game. Everything after that I don't blame ya. They don't make quality like they used to.

They're fine games, revolutionary even, I'm just sick of the way people talk about them and how I have to constantly hear about Romero and Carmack and everyone inbetween "Oh man when Romero designed E1M1" like holy shit just shut the fuck up already I get it. I agree about Romero, but Carmack is a real skilled programmer who developed something new from almost nothing (a single paper about BSP). And then he kept improving it for years and making something new. There are not many people who can do that, less than a hundred on the whole planet I'd say.

Its color palette is trash but the enemies and architecture hold up really well. They feel like they belong to a real believable world. Unlike Doom which feels like an incoherent mishmash of random ideas.

doom was so far ahead of everything else being done at the time. and though it's not my particular cup of tea, it's so good, in fact, that people are still playing it and enjoying it to this day, not just as a sort of nostalgic throwback or a curiosity
and quake (my cup of tea) is a complete fucking mess that's still really fun to play. calling it just a demo is insane. there would be no engine to demos if the games didn't stand on their own. and they did
quake 3 is probably when you can start calling id's games engine demos. it was clear where carmack's priorities were and with romero and hall gone that was the only drive left
and it's still fucking awesome and being played to this day

I seem to remember a whole lot of "it's nice but it's not great" chat around Wolf3D at the time. Sure, maybe it was salty amiga/st owners, being a bong there were a lot of them around, but my distinct impression was that Wolf was not universally acclaimed. Boring level design, "who has the bigger gun" determined the winner in fights, RNG being the deciding factor in how much damage you take, boring grind to find secrets, every boss being just a damage sponge, etc. etc.
Doom was praised much more though.

Original Dooms are fine in terms of available mechanics. Community wads basically distilled the game to its prime components - movement, weapons and enemy rosters, and combined them in various ways. Not many other games have that, only a couple dozens I think.
