>play these "amazing" games
>It's just ok

Why the Saturn exclusive library is so underwhelming?

I love the N64 and PS1 but damn i have suffered so many disappointement with the Saturn

The only exclusive that i really loved was Night into dreams, amazing game

The other stuff is either mediocre (Panzer dragoon saga,Guardian heroes,Sakura wars...) or pretty good but not amazing(Dragon force, Shining force 3, Taromaru...)
>>
How many of these have you played extensively ?

1. SATURN BOMBERMAN
2. BUBBLE SYMPHONY
3. WARRIORS OF FATE
4. SUPER TEMPO
5. NBA JAM TE
6. RAMPAGE WORLD TOUR
7. ASTAL
8. RAYMAN
9. FANTASY ZONE
10. SEXY PARODIUS
11. Game Tengoku
12. BUST A MOVE 3
13. FANTASTIC PINBALL
14. Bubble Bobble

How about the 4mb expansion CAPCOM 2d fighting games ?
>>
Saturn Bomberman Battle Mode Soccer Stage, 4p-8p couch , is the greatest 5th gen experience to be had.
>>
I can't tell you to enjoy something you don't enjoy OP but Guardian Heroes, Panzer Zwei, Dragon Force, Sega Rally, VF2, SFA2, these are not "mediocre" titles
>>
>>12230905
Check out Magic Knight Rayearth. That's the only Saturn game I would say is decent.
>>
>>12230958
I talked about Saturn exclusive anon,no multiplat or arcade port

The list of Saturn exclusive i have played

Night into dreams
Shining force 3 (the whole trilogy)
Dragon force
Burning rangers
Sakura wars 1
Enemy zero
Legend of oasis
Taromaru
Guardian heroes
Panzer dragoon 1,2 and Saga
Dezaemon 2

I think that's all,may have forgotten 1 or 2
>>
>>12230963
Haven't played it but from my experience all Bomberman are the same

+My friends are absolute normies they only play FIFA or Call of duty, don't think they will be interested in playing an 30 years old game from an obscure machine
>>
>>12230990

My bad, browsing this while half paying attention to NFL.

I consider the CAPCOM 4mb titles to practically be Saturn exclusives until some remasters on PS3 & Switch, since PS1 butchered them so badly. Taking away tons of animation, fucked up polygonal hitboxes, timing off, took away tag-in mechanics from the tag in games like X-Men vs Street Fighter.

Whereas they’re arcade perfect plus on Saturn. Plus because of extra modes, and slightly larger sprites.
>>
>>12230975
>Guardian Heroes, Panzer Zwei, Dragon Force

Guardian heroes is one of the worst Treasure game imo , i don't want rpg mechanic in my beat em up,neither a invincible ally or an extremely unbalanced game

Zwei is good but it's nowhere near Sin and punishment,a truly fantastic game

Dragon force like i said is pretty good and original but it's has many flaws which prevent him from achieving excellence
>>
>>12230996
Naaaaaaaaaaah

Saturn Bomberman battle mode is by far the greatest of them all, and it’s not close. That’s a widely held belief amongst Bomberman fags. Saturn is pinnacle by far.
But FYI, if you only play the single player mode then yeah, they’re all samey and meh. That’s like only playing open world mode on the new Mario kart.

Battle mode is where it’s at.
>>
>>12231004
If i want to play them i just play the superior arcade version

No point in playing the Saturn version

I've started to appreciate the Saturn a lot lately but I do disagree with a lot of the praise its library gets. For example Daytona USA has like 4 tracks and about the same number or cars to choose from. Wow it's fucking nothing. That's kind of how it goes on Saturn. But then I look at my translated games folder and there's over 50 games in that bitch and there's plenty more added each year. I wish I liked fighting games more but I just can't get into besides maybe 20 minutes of X-Men vs Capcom every once in a while.
>>
No one has mentioned Shinrei Jusatsushi Tarōmaru. One of the best and most ultra rare saturn exclusive games......pathetic

OP here personal ranking of the Saturn exclusive i have played

1)Night into dreams: the best by quite a margin 19/20

2)Dragon force: pretty addictive but it get repetitive really fast and the fights are way too simplistic 16/20

3)Shining force 3 (the whole trilogy): sadly way too easy,no permadeath, pacing problem, the animation and the 3 POW are great though 15/20

4) Taromaru : fun and original,wish it was a little harder+autofire 15/20

5)Panzer dragoon zwei: it's good but i wasn't blow away by it 14/20

6)legend of oasis: not nearly as good as the Megadrive episode ,cumberstone spirit system 13/20

7)Burning rangers:meh ,i like the vibe but pretty average overall 12/20

8)Panzer dragoon 1 : pretty barebone ,not as good as the second 11/20

9)Dezaemon 2: this game taught me that i'm not a creative person 10/20

10)Sakura wars 1: probably the easiest trpg that i have ever played (and it's a big problem in a tactical), not a fan of the dating sim aspect either 8/20

11)Saga:what a disappointement,that's not the FF7 of the Saturn 7/20

12)Guardian heroes : pretty bad BTU , extremely unbalanced,RPG stuff ,a fucking invincible ally...

13)Enemy zero : a slog ,the story is a rip off of Alien 5/20

As for me, Saturn was less about originals and more about enhanced ports, especially from PC-98. Although it did have some nice originals, too, like Tengai Makyou 4.
Kind of like the PC Engine.
>>
Blast Wind is a great Saturn exclusive shmup. A little easy, but I play for score, and I screw up a lot anyways. Plenty of stuff like Layer Section and Radiant Silvergun and Battle Garegga were effectively Saturn exclusive back in the day unless you could get to an arcade or a japanese arcade in some cases.
>>
>>12231940
> Plenty of stuff like Layer Section and Radiant Silvergun and Battle Garegga were effectively Saturn exclusive back in the day unless you could get to an arcade or a japanese arcade in some cases.

The Saturn ports of those were JP only anyway except for Layer Section, which had a Windows port as early as 1997.
>>
>>12231665
I mean, to be fair, how large really is the Saturn exclusive library anyway? Nights, PD I & II and probably others on that list technically don’t even count now.
>>
>>12230905
I've had the same experience. I actually really want to like the Saturn, I consider myself a pretty big Sega fan I love the Genesis and Dreamcast and I have consistently purchased almost every game they have made since the Dreamcast era, but I just do not like the Saturn and it's games at all. It's either arcade ports that have nothing to offer anymore because you can just play the real arcade versions on MAME, or the few genuine exclusives that aren't actually that good but get overhyped by Saturn fans anyway.
If we're ignoring arcade ports, which we should given what I said above, you're not left with much. Panzer Dragoon 1 and especially 2 are pretty good I'll give you that. Saga is an incredibly mediocre JRPG though, nothing is gained from turning all the fun rail shooting into turn based combat and the world is pretty small and the story isn't engaging. Nights is a boring and repetitive score attack game that lacks mechanical depth, once you figure out the couple things it doesn't tell you its trivial to get the best ranks on every level and it doesn't even feel good to play. Astal is a fucking snore, the platforming is basic as shit and its incredibly slow. Burning Rangers is perhaps the biggest let down of them all, the training stage tricks you into thinking its gonna be this super cool action platformer but all you do is go around and collect crystals and piss out little dinky fires with a squirt gun. Guardian Heroes is okay I guess, doesn't suck my cock as good as it seems to for the rest of you. Magic Knight Rayearth is just some anime tie-in game and the fact that its heralded as the best of the best for the console is hilarious like if that's the best you have it's pretty clear the console isn't actually that good. It's not a bad game but it would be a dime a dozen if it was on Playstation. Saturn Bomberman is just Bomberman, fun with friends I guess but 90% of the people that brag about it having 16 players haven't actually ever done that.
>>
>>12232037
Idk am I forgetting anything else? Super Tempo?? Does anyone actually like it? Its not even as good as the 32X game which itself isn't that great either. Clockwork Knight is decent, but much like other platformers on the system it just feels sluggish and isn't very exciting.

Idk man, I've given the Saturn multiple shots. I own a real system, bought plenty of the overpriced games, I had an action replay so I could run burned CDs, and even bought the expensive Satiator flashcart when it came out and loaded it up with the fullset when that came out just to try more games and literally not a single thing has hooked me. I really want to like it, the fans make it sound like an under appreciated gem much like my favorite system the Dreamcast, but it just doesn't seem like it actually is. Saturn is the biggest grift of the retro gaming world.
>>
Panzer Dragoon was so fucking boring, I think it only gets praise due to its pretty fantastic art style

>>12232057

>90% of the people that brag about it having 16 players haven't actually ever done that
It's ten players, and since that's a pretty graphically simple 2D game it has worked on emulators for a long time, I bet people other than me have actually played massive games with a bunch of players. Back in the day I brought my laptop and some cheap usb gamepads to school and had friends play it a few times. We could also plug in keyboards from the school computers and map several players to different keys like WASD, FTGH, IJKL, etc. I don't think we ever did ten, but we definitely did at least six. It's more than you can play with in any other console bomberman game I know of, so I think that counts as truly using the feature.
We also played the 7 player tank battle from Saturn Duke Nukem, "Death Tank Zwei" in the same emulator.

>technically don’t even count now.
Literally don't even count now. Just goes to show how utterly ignorant OP is on the subject they/them is sharing a youtube induced hot take on.
>how large really is the Saturn exclusive library anyway?
Quite large. Of games 50+. Of that 1/2 are solid games worth playing. Of that 1/2 are indeed "amazing".
>>
>>12230986
The Saturn's swan song (at least in America).
Great Zelda-like, I'd recommend it as well.
>>
>>12230958
You just named the most 7/10s of all 7/10s

I've played Astal and Super Tempo, and they're... fine. There are definitely better Saturn games to recommend. Bubble Bobble compilation sucks for what it is. Rayman is fine but available on other platforms. Saturn Fantasy Zone is nothing special and a weird one to mention.
>>
>>12230990
This is honestly one of the best lists of good Saturn exclusives. Magic Knight Rayearth is quite nice, and Elevator Action Returns is good too. I do like Tryrush Deppy, but the gameplay and level design is a bit weak. The boss battles are pretty nice though.
>>
>>12231161
>4) Taromaru : fun and original,wish it was a little harder+autofire 15/20
Autofire is the brainlet way to play the game. Attacks are weaker and don't chain between enemies.

bulk slash and burning rangers are also pretty good; also the best port of cleopatra fortune
>>
>>12230905
I think it's easy to miss out on what actually makes the Saturn library good because it simultaneously has amazing coverage in some genres (racing, fighting, shmups, FPS, 2D platformers, Dungeon Crawlers, dating sims) while making no attempts to even compete in other genres (big RPGs with cutscenes and a huge world map, collectathon 3D platformers). This makes sense when you understand that FF7, Spyro, Banjo Kazooie etc primarily released in 1997/1998 when no new Saturn games were being greenlit. Saturn has amazing coverage of the genres that were popular in 1994-1996 because this was the period when games for Saturn were designed and greenlit. It has no coverage of genres that caught on after that.

>Daytona USA/Sega Rally don't have as many cars or features as Gran Turismo!!!
Because Gran Turismo was a late 1997 release, and Daytona USA/Sega Rally/Need for Speed 1 were 94/95/96 releases respectively.

This is why Saturn fans will tell you the best possible path Sega could have taken would have been fixing Saturn's US marketing in 96/97 and delaying a future console until 2000. Most of the PS1's biggest hits in its biggest genres didn't really form into "modern" games until late 1996, and the really impressive stuff like Gran Turismo/Spyro/MGS1 were all 1997/1998 releases. The Saturn did well enough in Japan, and the 3D hardware is strong enough (despite popular misconceptions) that stuff like Gran Turismo/Spyro would have absolutely been made for the saturn if it was just supported a bit longer.
>>
>>12230905
Weird I had the opposite experience. Thought the Saturn had a weak library without many GOAT exclusives then I looked back and realized how many great exclusives I played. Many of the titles you mentioned I think are some of the best ever and I still think about them to this day

That's why they should've done Outrunners. Eight cars and they probably could've had 4 player split screen with use of the multi-tap.
>>
>>12232401
Yeah, it's bizarre, we got ports of random DOS/3DO stuff like Quarantine, but not half of Sega's in-house racers. It's the same with the FPS stuff, solid versions of Duke 3D, Quake, Powerslave, and Space Hulk: VotBA, but the Doom port was made by a retard despite the hardware being perfect for Doom.

Can we take a minute to appreciate how fucking terrible Outrunners on Genesis is? Because Outrunners on Genesis is FUCKING TERRIBLE.

I haven't played the N64 games (I tried the first one but didn't like it, haven't tried the 2nd one), only the PSX trilogy + Park (+ the GBA ones).
The Saturn version is quite different, it works so that you can and have to switch cars at checkpoints, with cars having different pros&cons (speed, handling, fuel, type of terrain) so you have to strategize which cars to bring/change to and you unlock new cars as you progress.
