The First-Person Shooter genre peaked here.
>>12231847The environmental interactions are great. Sprites have a level of production value 3D does not, and when someone wants to flush a toilet in Duke it's a snappy animation with a realistic noise. Someone flushes a toilet in Half-Life it's noise with the water polygon lowering before rising again. It's a different field but the lack of an art to the polygon toilet is apparent even to a child. Toilets rarely felt as good in other games. Even things like cabinets and doors swing open with an effective swoosh and clack in Duke, but in other games? It feels so slow. Duke isn't moving slow, he's bursting through. When I walk thru a door in real life I'm not blocked by the door it flows with me as I pass through it. Unfortunately 3D video game developers never opened a door in real life so this is lost on them.
>>12231847the levels were so fucking soulful it's insane
>>12231847I get stuck all the time like in Shadow Warrior. Didn't have this problem in Blood.
>>12231847>The First-Person Shooter genre peaked here. This and Goldeneye 64 are the best FPS games of all time and it disgusts me how much regression has happened since then.
get em to make more questionable duke expansions, with more weirder box art covers
>>12231857>Toilets rarely felt as good in other games. What the fuck...
>>12232534Isn't Perfect Dark better than Goldeneye64?
>>12232561I think it's good, but the level design and the mission objectives aren't as fluid as GE64. The alien enemies also make the game worse IMO and the frame rate is much more sluggish than Goldeneye as well. In some aspects it's better but I just prefer GE as it doesn't seem to suffer from as many drawbacks.
FPS peak with Blood
>>12231847For single player shooters? Yeah you have a case. For multiplayer focused shooters though UT99 has gotta be it. I know duke3d has pretty solid multiplayer but UT99 does it better
>>12232615Said nobody but retards
>>12231857what an impressive tech demo
>>12232615>hitscan enemy shitfest with cringe horror references on a terrible engine?
I just wish other Build Engine games went as hard with the level interactions as Duke did
>>12231847actually game bad
Duke ruled as long as you only played/remember the first 2-3 maps of each episode (or skip episode 2 entirely). The quality takes a nosedive into pure jank.
>>12232738>take a piss>gain +10 HPother devs could never
>>12232737filtered by ludo is a cold take
>>12232737Kicking severed heads with blood pouring and staining the ground alone makes Blood worth playing.
>>12231847It peaked with Doom. Duke was already a fair way along the downward curve.
>>12231857Doors in games are mostly terrible. Hotline Miami gets it right.
>>12232615LOL, no, you homo.
>>12231857Doors are better in Blood than in Duke. They have acceleration/deceleration for instance
It's that time of the year again. Full on action and winter wonder.
>>12234828Elaborate.
bump
>>12234708This is the definitive "zoomer trying to look like a boomer" opinion.
the problem with build games post dos was the insufferable mouse feeling, love Duke tho
>>12235249then>you have to go through modified versions of the first few levels? oh my god, this is a travestynow>this is kinowhy is this?
>>12236451He has a point. Duke's level design is terrible compared to Doom.
>>12236835Both Doom and Duke have a similar problem of the good maps being frontloaded in the shareware episode so they get worse as the game goes on, and in both games the second episode is a drastic step down. The main difference is Doom's entire first episode is good while Duke's becomes a boring slog just a few maps in.
>>12236858The second episode in Duke is the best. It has the craziest most original layouts (Spaceport alone has more verticality in its layout than the average Quake level), the most and best use of sector effectors, great lighting and atmosphere, and lot's of great combat scenario. The first episode is also great but it's half as short and only has half the weapons and is missing a lot of enemies.
>>12236862i prefer most of my duke levels to be real-ish places, so long as it's not barren or whatever. that goes for any build engine games really.
>>12235312They can slam open as you pass through them and it can stun foes if they're hit by the swinging door.
Floodzone is a masterpiece of a map.
>>12237125That was the first map I had ever play of this when I was like 5 and it was the coolest thing I had ever experianced up to that point.
>>12236862Maybe if tbey didnt fill every empty space with sentry drones. I prefer e4 personally.
>>12231847Legit for a solid 2 years from 1996 to 1998 I would just go all over the internet to find the best comfy Duke maps. From STADIUM.map to ISLAND.map and beyond. I just want comfy well built cities and maps!Maps that remake locations or cool places. God I love Duke3D
>>12237752>comfy Duke maps. From STADIUM.map to ISLAND.mapShare them or you're a faggot
Why are Duke fans so autistic?
>>12237761> stadium.mapSummer Olympic Stadium Map(Slightly based on the Montreal Olympic Stadium, back then this map would crash / slow down some mid 90s PCs it was so extensive)>island.mapRoch Island. Another marvel of Duke fan designhttps://www.arrovfnukem.com/en/roch-island-multiple-authorsSort the rest by SCORE and get some soulful makes form back in the day
>>12231847I still like Duke, but quake and Doom MOG I hard IMO. I feel like Dukes levels play samey and if I'm going to play Duke I'll play a little bit of 3d and a little of time to kill and other Duke shit. The character is better than the games and I feel like playing doom and quake 1 feels less samey than Duke 3d. But that's just a personal preference.
>>12237752Fucking BASED.
