How the hell did Retro Studios make such an incredible game on their first fucking try? Metroid Prime is such a fucking joy to play, the shooting is just fun, the world is incredibly designed and packed with secrets, the pacing is great, the graphics are among the very best of the generation, the music is incredible, everything about it is a masterpiece. I don't even like other Metroid games, just these first two Prime games they're just that good. Shame about 3 and 4.
for some reason the first 3d game for every nintendo ip is amazing, then the sequels always suck dick.
>>12234447Very impressive games. Fantastic on Wii.
>>12234450I thought 2 was just as good if not better in a lot of aspects.
>>12234447im a bit surprised k-mart was even still around when this game released, let alone relevant enough to be paying for video game promotions. there was actually a popular virtual k-mart in vrchat that was shut down last year because the creator was a pedo using it to groom kids. back in my day those guys had to pick themselves up by their bootstraps and physically walk to the store and expose themselves to children
>>12234458I really miss stores with mini restaurants inside them like K-Mart. I'm not sure why, I never actually ate at any of them and it seems odd to chow down on a Pizza Hut pizza while shopping for clothes and home goods but there's something incredibly nostalgic about it. I just liked knowing it was there.
>>12234447Because most of the staff already had experience from other games, like Turok.
>>12234468>I really miss stores with mini restaurants inside them like K-Mart.i know what you mean, that is a very nostalgic thing for me. k-mart's you walked in and it was all the way down on the right. target's was immediately to the left. i always associate them with icee machines.
The only reason they gave Retro Studios Metroid is because the franchise was dead at that point so there was no harm if they fucked it up, also becausae it wasn't one of Miyamoto's "babies". All in all that probably gave Retro Studios a lot of freedom in doing whatever they wanted but in the end, MP has more in common with 3D Zelda than with Metroid in terms of gameplay.
>>12234447>the pacing is greatstopped reading here, awful bait.
>>12234447>incredible>fucking joy>just fun>incredibly>is great>the very best>is incredible>is a masterpiece>I likeYou are incapable of explaining why you like it, you just keep saying you like it over an over again. Try to develop some critical thinking next time.
>>12234447>the shooting is just funThe lock-on auto-aim is worse than in modern Call of Duty. Metroid Prime feels like an American version of Zelda: a first-person perspective where you shoot things in an awkward way and are constantly guided on where to go, as if they assume you can’t figure it out yourself. It was amazing when I was 8, but as a 35-year-old, I can say it’s not the masterpiece many claim it to be.If all the bs that you wrote ain't bait and you genuinely believe it: you should kill yourself. Seriously, do it.
>>12234454>Fantastic on Wii.You didn't beat the game.
>>12234490if he wrote a multi post essay about the game you would be clowning on the guy for writing too much lol this is an acceptable way write a post to get people talking about the game and talk about something you like
>>12234498I didn't, because I had just completed them on gamecube. I wanted to just try the Wii controls, but had so much fun I think I played all the way up to sanctuary fortress. I'll definitely go with the wii versions in the future, no question about it.
>>12234480It's like a 10 hour game on your first play through, significantly less if you know what you're doing. You're constantly getting new power ups that unlock new areas and create shortcuts for getting around the world. I dunno man seems fine to me. Only real argument I could see is getting the Chozo artifacts at the end but if you know where they are that takes no time at all.
>>12234494not familiar with modern cod but the lock on system works fine for this game because its not a traditional fps. ive never played another fps with lock on. on paper it sounds like a terrible idea but theres never been a moment playing this game where i thought "i wish i could free aim".
>>12234494Nobody said it was the best, most complex shooting of all time or compared it to anything else. I think locking on and circle strafing and jumping around the enemies is fun. Heaven forbid we think a video game is fun fuck you.
>>12234547>I think locking on and circle strafing and jumping around the enemies is funThat’s a fair point, but I never said it wasn’t fun. What I meant is that Metroid Prime treats the player like they’re clueless, and as a result, it feels like Zelda in first-person. It’s a Metroid game in name and esthetics only, but in reality, it’s just another Western Zelda wannabe--original, sure, but not as blatant as Starfox Adventures. It can be fun, if you’re as impressionable as an eight-year-old.>>12234546>"i wish i could free aim"You’re the kind of person who would appreciate NG’s Ninja Dog difficulty. It’s not up for debate: you just want to enjoy a cozy game and watch amusing things get taken out. Nothing wrong with that.I want to focus on discussing the core mechanics of the game and what makes a "Metroid" game feel authentic, rather than personal opinions about if it’s fun or not, since that’s subjective.
>>12234694youre kinda gay dude, ive beaten ninja gaiden on master ninja multiple times. thats not even a hard game considering you can pause and heal whenever you want.
Retro Studio only made 1 truly great game (Metroid Prime 1)All the other stuff is either just ok,mid or straight up bad
>>12234698You mentioned that you find an FPS with lock-on fun and never felt the need to aim, yet you also claim to have beaten Ninja Gaiden not just five times to unlock Master Ninja, but several times on Master Ninja difficulty.I can smell the bullshit, contrarian-fag. You’re not being sincere in one of your two claims.Buckle up.
>>12234712>five times to unlock Master Ninjalol no>I can smell the bullshityou dont even know how the game works. how many times have you beat master ninja? keep in mind the game is over 20 years old so playing thru it multiple times really doesnt seem that fer fetched.
>>12234525It's really not that difficult to develop an adequate inventory of concepts to explain in more objective and helpful terms why one likes and dislikes a game.>"Metroid Prime has good exploration, because... uh... b-because it just does!"No, Metroid Prime has a good "exploration rhythm" because there is deliberate acceleration and deceleration in player action (and action types) when visiting new areas vs old ones. The visor overlays are gameplay justification for making you feel like a legitimate observer and explorer of the world rather than just a viewer. You slow down to check things out in new areas with the scan visor, and do it again later for those same areas with the thermal and x-ray visors. This is why it's so satisfying to play Metroid Prime, particularly for the first time or after years of not playing it. This is also why some of the backtracking feels particularly bad despite the rest of the game feeling great, because those are the times when this quietly-integrated rhythm is completely shattered and you no longer feel like you're exploring, but simply dealing with the world.
>>12234458K mart was going till atleast the midish 2010s. I bought 3DS stuff from them, but near the end, they stopped selling vidya. Was a cool place for bargain bin pick ups.
>>12234494>I was 8, but as a 35-year-oldThat math dont add up.
>>12234712NTA, but you are a fucking friendless dork. God forbid someone finds the act of blasting shot with a lock-on blitz attack to be fun. Plenty of flying and vehicular combat games use em, plus arcade action games, and no one bitches. Maybe if the lock on option was a separate option and free aim was the default, you would have a point, but it's just clearly the mechanics the game was designed around to focus more on movement while fighting.
>>12234447Nothing about this game is amazing. Are you people out of your mind?
>>12234881>dude... popular game is LE BAD.... are you people insane?!
>>12234886>The number said..!!The game sucks dick, is paced like shit and plays like shit too. It's so fucking slow.
>>12234458>>12234805the last K-mart in my area closed in either 2019 or 2021 and it became a target.>>12234886only time i've ever felt like that greentext is with modern RPGs. shit like baldur's gate 3 feels so astroturfed.
>>12234886That score is a product of its time. If it came out today, we all know it would be far from being so highly rated. It's a shame that Metroid, like many other second-tier franchises, such as Wario Land, left R&D1. Sucks that the enormous costs of 3D games don't allow Nintendo to develop all of its franchises in-house.
>>12234475>>12235773bait used to mean somethingor at least something more than blatantly lying anyway
>>12234534Wii version is missing a ton of graphical effects.
>>12234490
I've seen a few memes about the new Metroid Prime but haven't really looked into it, did something happen
>>12236130modern Nintendo's open world mandate
>>12234494>feels like an American version of ZeldaWhy are nintoddlers like this?Zelda didn't invent lock-on. Nor did Ocarina invent, nor innovate the "open world" aesthetic, OR the hub-world aesthetic, which was quite popular and in games such as STRIFE, Midwinter, Powerslave, Hexen, System Shock, Turok, Tekwar, Shadowcaster, Terminator Future Shock, and Quake 2.Can you faggots make one legitimate criticism that doesn't resort to "IT'S LIKE/NOT LIKE ZELD!"?
>>12236391>Powerslaveman that game was rad
>>12234712Least obnoxious Ninja Gaiden fag
