I remember being what you might conceivably call a "hate campaign" around this game when it came out. Fanboys wanted you to hate it because it was PS2 exclusive. Elitists wanted you to hate it because it didn't come out of the arcades first. A lot of general consensus among nerds that it was one of those games that deserved to fail for the company exercising what they deemed to be poor business sense, to the point they discouraged others from it in hopes of such an outcome. Really overblown and fucking stupid in retrospect. But kind of wild to think back on how cyber dorks going "this game offends me and should FLOP" was already a thing as far back as 2005.
