This game really shows why so called 'tank controls' and tile based movement worked so well with Tomb Raider gameplay. With analog movement and "jump from any point within the tile" controls the platforming is so much worse that even the simplest jumps from Tomb Raider can become a burden in this.
>>
the first tomb raider has a great feeling of verisimilitude (outside the silliness of shooting bats with a handgun)
the deliberate controls and the nature of the animations made it really feel like you were just an especially talented gymnast or something
rather than a literal superhuman
>>
>>12235586
Yes, the animations feel silly in Indiana Jones and the free movement doesn't help since you can "teleport" to any direction, and since you can jump from any point the game sometimes has to make up for it when you grab something to hang onto by also "teleporting" the character there.
That's without mentionning the glitches/oddities due to the game being seemingly unfinished

Speedrun techniques for this game are really interesting
>>
>>12235624
Considering it's kind of a glitchfest that feels untested and unpolished, I bet. Just running normally can make areas fail to load for a while.

The N64 version came out a year later and has way more polish, the PC version is like a beta build.
>>
>>12235683
Parroting YouTube opinions I see? If you were actually familiar with the games, you’d know that the Nintranny version is a glitchy, buggy mess, with LESS content, WORSE sound, TRASH frame rate, and a few cosmetic graphical extras that don’t matter at all and don’t even come close to making up for all the other flaws.
>>
kek i forgot about this guy
>>
>>12236080
It's not that simple. The N64 version was rushed because most of the dev team was re-allocated to Battle for Naboo, leaving one generalist to do basically everything. It is more polished in some ways, but it has much worse QA and is unstable.

I'd argue the combat is a lot better. The movement is a lot better because it allows both tank and 3D controls. You literally just press the analogue stick gently left or right to turn on the spot like tank controls. If you press it further, Indy moves in that direction. It's quite elegant.

So you then?

The glitches in this are so fucking bad it makes me feel like dropping the game right there and then

>to get out of the water you're supposed to grab onto a ledge, then Indy does an animation where he puts his hat back on
>if you try this here you'll fall right back down the water then teleport back onto the beach but without the hat
>Without the hat you're softlocked and can't use any item
>you can only simply swim up the beach but still no hat

Little jab at the N64
They didn't seem to have figured it out indeed

lmao sure thing, schizo.

that remained the case until its last year or so of its commercial viabilty and then nintendo decided to share their custom gpu microcode and its proper documentation with Rare to try and keep the console alive until nintnedo could get the gamecube to market. nintendo managed to sell a shitload of n64 consoles but supplying games for them became a challenge.

and the reason why nintendo didn't share proper documentation for their gpu microcode is so nintendo produced games would look better than their licenseees. they really were that petty. when Rare first started making n64 games they got documentation for the gpu that was so poorly written and incomplete that Rare's programmers had to reverse engineer microcode that was supplied with the SDK just to understand how the fuck it worked.

This sort of jank feels very characteristic of n64 games.

I just got the gears puzzle. What a retarded design. They couldn't have made it more misleading if they tried. So you have a bunch of symbols on the doors and the stones, turns out they don't mean anything. Instead you just have to line up the stones like they were gears, except the things don't look like gears and their shapes would never act like gears irl.

>indiana jones

Is it possible to enoy this game by factoring in the jank, or no?
>>
>>12238386
If you play the correct version (i.e. not Nintendo) it’s fine.
>>
>>12238386
I'm still enjoying it but it could have been so much better

If you're going to play this game, use savestates, save often. I also got a half dozen crashes (game and emulator)

>being turning in round for 1+ hour in minecart level

FUCK this game seriously

thanks for cementing the decision to never play this piece of dog shit

When the level design / exploration is fun, it is quite fun; there are some cool levels in there. But there are a couple of really shitty puzzles, the combat is poor (worse than Tomb Raider), and the plethora of glitches is just intolerable

The end game seems even less polished

At least I'll be done with this thing soon and at this point I'm not afraid to look up a guide if I get stuck because I'm not sure if I got softlocked due to a glitch (again) or if it's going to be a really farfetched puzzle like the gears/minecart thing.
I got filtered by having to push the block onto the elevator but I actually thought that was pretty smart, it just lacked the proper clue.
>>
Shame this game is so broken, will never play it. Seems like a neat game if it wasn't breaking itself at pivotal moments.

Damn, can't play the inferior Nintendo port of the game. I guess that means it doesn't exist now.

Correct.

Is there a truly great Tomb raider clone?

They all seems to collapse in some way (bad controls, shitty level design, way too handholding etc...)
