Games where a port is better than the original. The DOS versions of Ultima (except Ultima 1) also come to mind

That's more like a remake

I'm sorry anon. It's my favorite version of DQ1.

Nearly every port was at the time due to different computer architectures and graphical capabilities.

The famicom graphics of Dragon Quest were putrid, way cuter on game boy.

I'm fond of CD-ROM console ports of PC-88/PC-98 games; they usually added arranged CD music and voiced cutscenes and they scroll/animate more smoothly

It's a demake

Famicom is still the best version of I-IV

I recently played through the Famicom port of Ys 1 without realizing what a huge downgrade it would be from PC-88

Those are the reworked NES graphics, not the FC originals.

The monster designs look awful on GB and that's the most important

I'm playing through III Famicom at the moment (after playing it on GBC in the past) and I have a new appreciation for the wizard job since AoE weapons don't exist in this version

I haven't played the console and PC versions back to back so it's a little hard for me to say. someone else tell me. all i know is that the load times are just obviously faster

I agree. I was merely stating that the picture he posted was not of the FC version.

Dragon Warrior 3 GBC is still the definitive version of the game with the most content and the cleanest translation.

Yes, the casualization in the SNES/GB version render a lot of mechancis pointless. The item bag renders having a priest in your party pointless until at least lvl 20 for instance

People usually like Contra 1 on the NES more than the arcade version for some reason, I don't know exactly why though. Similarly, Turtles in Time is another one where people usually prefer the SNES version due to the added content. Finally, speaking of DQ, I think DQ5 is better on the PS2. In terms of difficulty, you have an extra team member, but enemies appear in greater numbers even before you can have 4 on your team, bosses have more health, you don't have a duplic hat anymore, buffs expire, items sell for less at shops and stat gains on level up are randomized. It also has better graphics and soundtrack, and more monsters.

>with the most content
From the /vr/ entries sure, but does it have more than HD-2D?
>>
>>12238059
DQ bugs me because most of the games are ugly. Terrible depiction of Toriyama's artistic style. I don't deny that there's a certain appeal in the jankiness and willingness to stick to that style. But I can't help seeing those games as nothing more than ugly. Meanwhile, other games, especially FF, have always placed importance on presentation. I don't know why DQ is popular in Japan.
>>
>>12238197
>the cleanest translation
Ehhh... it doesn't have the annoying accents and goofy spell names that we've been saddled with since DQ8, but it also suffers from the issue of having to fit a lot of text (especially with a font so absurdly large) into such tiny boxes.

>From the /vr/ entries sure, but does it have more than HD-2D?
The only real loss from GBC is the Pachisi boards. The Ice Cave is still intact but got heavily expanded, and Monster Medals is replaced with collecting monsters directly. Most of the new additions are for party members with added skills/spells and a new class. I'd say they're about even.

>>12238059
Play the FM Towns versions of the Ultima games. 32 bit colour, voice acting, SOVL.

Because it was there first. That's seriously the only reason.
If Final Fantasy beat it to the punch, they'd be worshipping that instead.

back in the day that used to mean "remake done on inferior hardware" (even if the gameboy is technically superior to the nes) instead of just being slang for a shitty remake.

All Tekken console ports, especially Tag Tournament.
>>
There is no bad port of Dragon Quest games.
Well, except for the early japanese PC ports maybe

The MSX versions where considered the best versions of DQ1&2 for the longest time, but when MSX emulation became easily available people played the games and realized that they where awful due to the scrolling, only thing they where better was at the music.

I've played MSX DQ2 and the only interesting thing was how some random encounters in the late game are more challenging, however it's almost kaizo tier to the point that you basically have no choice but to NOPE the fuck out running away with your tail between your legs

The monsters graphics are also worse than on NES, slightly worse, that is to say not as bad as the GB version but still worse than NES; and of course there are no sprites in the field/overworld, it's background tiles moving around, so there is no transparency and the characters really chug along as making it feel like a slideshow.
I didn't find the music particularly better either. All in all it was a nice curiosity but I don't see how ANYONE could claim it's the best version unless it's similar situation as Resident Evil 2 on N64 (cope from console warriors desperate to pretend 'their' machine had all the superior versions).
