Do you mean 2d platformers or 2d games in general?
Yoshi's Story is actually good despite how many say its bad or a baby game, if you try to go for all 30 melons or 30 lucky fruits the game gets much more fun, the movement in that game is very underrated too.
Goemon's Great Adventure is fantastic, easily one of the best games on the console.
Disney's Tarzan is alright, if you like the movie you'll like the game.
MK SubZero would be fine if it wasnt so cryptic with some elements and didn't have death traps up the ass.
If you mean 2D games like games that uses 2D sprites the N64 has some, mostly arcade-type games like Rampage World Tour, NBA Hangtime, KI Gold, Rakuga Kids, Puzzle Bobble, Bomberman 64 2001, etc..
There's some japanese games like Bangai-O, Project Wonder J2 and Super Robot Wars 64.
>>
>>12240284
First of all, don't let people here try to convince you Yoshi's Story is good.
Bangai-O is great
Goemon's Great Adventure is fantastic

That's about it.

>Yoshis Story is actually good
>the game gets a lot more fun if you go for all 30 melons
HOLY FUCK NO IT DOES NOT. Getting all 30 melons in each level is the most tedious boring bullshit I have ever seen in a videogame. Even if you get a level perfect on your first try, each level is going to take you 30 minutes AT LEAST to find them all if you're not using a guide. The sniffing mechanic ruins the entire thing, you have to slowly sniff every single fucking inch of every level to find like half of the melons and the screen zooms all the way in and you have to walk really slow and ontop of that its extremely precise and finicky. Beyond that though shit can go wrong so easily, if a melon spawns ontop of another piece of fruit you just get fucked, for some reason the priority always goes to the shittier fruit behind it that you don't want and Yoshi will always eat that one first instead. You can also fuck up certain puzzles entirely, some melons just despawn the second they're offscreen for some reason, and don't even get me started on the gimmicky minigames that you also only get one try at. If anything goes wrong during any given level, congrats your already way too long half hour attempt just turned into a full hour or longer.

Fuck Yoshis Story and fuck you if you like this game.
>>
>>12241142
sounds fun.
>>
>>12241142
Oh yeah, I also wanted to mention the game doesn't even properly recognize you even getting all 30 melons which screams to me that it's not something the devs intended for you to do. You don't get literally anything for trudging through this bullshit, not a little melon icon checkmarking the level, no unlockables, literally fucking nothing. The best you get is a slightly differently worded sentence during the games ending, but you don't need to get all the melons to see that, not even close.
>>
>>12241164
It literally does recognize you getting melons, on the end level screen. What the fuck are you talking about.
>>
>>12241193
Thats not permanent and it also does that if you get 30 of any fruit

Bangai-O is me favorite.
It's also different enough from the DC remake in both graphics and game design so it's still very much worth playing the 64 original.
There's a number of other 2D games on N64, there's more than what people think, but a lot of them are JP only. Stuff like Getter Love, Zool (JRPG pokemon style game), Puyo Puyo Sun 64, Susume Taisen Puzzle-dama.
There's also some western ones though like South Park Chef's Luv Shack

The YI defender is the one who recommended getting all the melons. The anon you replied to was just saying that it's absolutely not worth doing that in that game and he's right.

>>
>>12242319
Yeah but he's talking from experience, which is why he's a fag. He ruined the game for himself being a tryhard. Yoshi's Story is great casual fun.
>>
There’s a translated versions of that game where you train a robot girl to be a real girl by looking up her skirt and making her do domestic labor.
>>
>>12242329
I'm the anon who wrote the comment, the game sucks both ways. Going for all the melons just makes it intolerable instead of a boring baby game you can finish in half an hour. Many people claim getting all the melons makes it better so I gave it a shot I don't get what's so wrong with that, I've played it both ways.

Come on guys.
>>
>>12243635
No it's really just because most of the Nintendo fans on here act like this if you don't like any given game on the system. No matter how well you present your argument like >>12241142 did or even if you play the game in the hyper specific way they told you to play it, you're just wrong and actually you didn't play it the right way do it again. Genuinely, Yoshi's Story was a game made for toddlers, Nintendo said that's what they set out to make themselves. It's a short and shallow game made for literal babies. The fact that this one guy who said he didn't like it caused this much of a shitstorm is proof that the fans are the problem with the consoles perception on this board and why there has been so many anti-Nintendo posts lately because they always act like this toward anything that doesn't perfectly align with them. I really like the N64, it's my second favorite system, and yet I'm being told I have Nintendo derangement syndrome because I agreed with the guy that didn't like Yoshis Story and am pointing out this bullshit. You guys are actual retards.

Sin and Punishment is genuinely incredible, Rakuga Kids is decent for a 2D fighter but not the best, Custom Robo 1 and 2 I really like but the gameplay can get a bit repetitive after a bit. Hybrid Heaven I'm not sure if I even understood the battle system but the atmosphere was incredible and its pretty short so even if it doesn't click with you you should just finish it anyway. I personally really like the underdog 3D platformers on the system, stuff like Glover and Rocket Robot on Wheels. Hell I actually think Earthworm Jim 3D is pretty good too despite what just about every review of the game online will tell you. Both Goemon games are fantastic. Chameleon Twist 1 and 2 are pretty good but very short. Wetrix is a great puzzle game. Magical Tetris Challenge is a really fun version of tetris. All 3 Turok games are pretty good albeit a little dated if you can get past that. Castlevania 64 isn't as bad as everyone says it is. Most of the wrestling games are really good, I never got into them before because I couldn't figure them out but they're easy to learn on N64. Extreme G 1 and 2 are cool F-Zero alternatives. Hell theres even some Nintendo stuff that I think is pretty underrated and nobody really talks about like 1080 Snowboarding, Excitebike 64, Doshin the Giant, Dr. Mario 64, Pokemon Puzzle League, etc. There really is a lot to love on the system just try out random shit, I'm still discovering stuff I hadn't played before and end up really enjoying.

can anyone recommend n64 controllers to buy? I'm seeing ones on amazon for anywhere between 15-50$ and I'm wondering if the cheap ones are shitty unresponsive bootlegs, or just as good as the expensive ones.
Also, are there flashcarts for the n64 that aren't several hundred USD? I'm seeing two recommended, the everdrive and the summercart, and everdrive is about 200+ while the summercart is 100.
I figure that it's technically worth it as rebuying a lot of the old games will cost way more in the long run.
I just rediscovered the n64 from when I was a kid.

This was my biggest roadblock for getting into the console, the controller situation is awful. Short and unfortunate answer is you're going to have to spend at least $100 to get a good controller. I tried all the cheap options, getting those 3D printed sticks from kirtchbent to replace the stick in an OEM controller, the random controllers you can buy on amazon, garbage like the retrobit or brawler 64 controllers, they all sucked in their own way. The N64 analog stick is very particular, you need that original analog gate and you need the sensitivity to be just right. Some claim to have the original stick values but if you plug them into a stick test program they're just blatantly not and its frustrating. I also think having the original controller shape is important too because a lot of games are uncomfortable and difficult to play with a modern controller shape. The steel stick seems like it would be the perfect solution but its impossible to get one Ive been trying for years, and its the most expensive.

The new 8bitdo N64 controller is a decent option, it gets the stick range and gate right at least(after a firmware update), and the modern layout isnt ideal but the buttons mimick the original layout and size so its less of an issue. I also don't like the kind of analog stick they used, I find it easier to be precise with the skinny analog stick the original controller had.

For me the best youre gonna do is either a brand new OEM controller or the new wireless controller they made for Switch which is what I use. I believe theres adapters you can buy to use it on a real N64, and it connects to PC easily. Unfortunately these are gonna cost you some money but just bite the bullet and go for it, its better than fucking around with the cheap options and continuously digging a hole trying to get things to work the right way.

As for flash carts the summercart is gonna be the best. Its cheaper has more features and better compatibility than the everdrive.

All I'm seeing is refurbished controllers for a decent price, but not anything new. Even gamestop seems to be selling original controllers for 20$, but I'm shaky on those despite usually having good experiences with gamestop used goods.
I'll probably just do as you say and get the switch version + adapter, on the bright side if I ever get the switch online then I can use them there too, or I can bring it to a friend's house.
>Summercart
I'll get that one then, thank you for the advice.

Japan likes cutesy stuff more than the west.
That being said the hate Story gets in general is funny to me, I liked it as a kid and still like it now, Melon or Lucky Fruit runs are fun to do (even if melon runs take a lot of tries to properly do, good thing the game has a save feature in the US version lol) and like I said before, the movement tricks you can do in the game are pretty cool.

Not much. It’s fuzzy on 2d vs 2.5d but I’ll list out the platformers, then some other 2d games.

As others have said, Yoshi’s Story is pretty dogshit for anyone over 9. Sniffing is enough to ruin any 2d platformer. I guess it’s ok for a casual runthrough. That goes by fast and then it’s time to forget about this stupid game. A “melon run” is a waste of time. I did it a long time ago, and it was a tedious, bad time. The focus on collecting fruit means there’s no reason to complete levels so you don’t see the whole game. In a melon run you do see the whole game when you “sniff” every square inch and realize there’s not much worth seeing. Mario can be considered for kids too but I would say Mario is to Looney Tunes or Scooby Doo as Yoshi’s Story is to Teletubbies.

Tigger’s Honey Hunt is more kids stuff. A bit less obnoxious that Yoshi’s Story though. It’s also on PS. At least there’s no “Sniffing”

Tarzan is average at best. It’s better played on PS w/ the fmvs. Just like a weaker, slightly janky Donkey Kong Country basically, with a few Crash style “runner” bonuses to break it up.

Goemon’s Great Adventure is really good. Kind of short, but some of the challenges in the levels are fun. Still easy, but harder than all the games mentioned so far. The bus stop was a cool secret. Character abilites keep things fresh. This is my top rec.

Kirby is Kirby, pretty similar to how he was on SNES and GameBoy, but that’s not a bad thing. It’s fun, it’s well made and I like it, but let’s not kid ourselves it’s very easy. Catchy music and it’s fun playing with combining his abilities. I’d compare it in tone and difficulty to Klonoa.

Bangi-O is a 2d game worth playing if you’re into the more obscure Treasure style. Its all about learning the weird mechanics and getting high scores, it’s fun. I like the DC version more.

Star Soldier: Vanishing Earth is a playable shmup. Dogshit compared to Saturn and PS shmups tho.
>>
>>12248847
verified by who? You're an absolute dumbass, if the seller says the stick is good in the description and it turns out it isn't, you send it back. You don't pay a premium for fake verification and its not hard to get a good condition controller for 35 bucks or less. You come off as a shmuck who shops like a redditor.
>>
>>12248996
>It’s better played on PS w/ the fmvs.
I really don't think seeing clips from a movie you've already seen in low quality is a make or break for the disney games of the time.
>>
>>12249050
Yeah but it’s something isn’t it? I can’t think of anything the N64 version has that the PS version doesn’t.
>>
>>12249359
Faster load times and smoother textures and graphics, although thats personal preference i suppose.
I also personally prefer the screenshot and text cutscenes because theyre faster to get through. I know the story because ive seen the movie, i dont need the clips.
A bugs life is one of the few games i can think of thats preferable on ps over n64 because the textures in the ps version resemble the movie better than the n64 version for some reason they have different assets.
>>
>>12249370
I think I just grew up with the N64 versions of those games so the fmvs are like a cool novelty to me if I play the PS versions. If I played them a ton like I did as a kid, I’d probably get sick of it and want faster load times and skipping.

Which version of Toy Story 2 do you like more? There’s a fix out for the dreamcast analog control I tried out a month or so ago thinking the DC version would be great now, but when I tried it and I still thought that version had way more pop-in and graphical glitches than PS or N64.
>>
>>12249410
Never played the DC version. Played ps, n64 and i had the pc version as a kid. N64 is my favorite although i think its a toss up really, the graphics arent different enough between versions to really pick one, if anything the ps1 version might be best. Im kind of biased to the n64 for nostalgia i suppose
>>
Is there a recomp for Mischief Makers or Sin and Punishment? Otherwise are you better off with Project64?
