Now that the dust has settled, why wasn't this game appreciated more? It was great.
It becomes great when you become a Strogg and get to run around fast, but not a minute before.
>>12247029I liked it but felt like generic sci-fi. Totally stopped caring after the flying ogre boss
>>12247029I accidentally my save file before the final boss and never tried again. Gunplay felt nice iirc.
>>12247029I really liked Doom 3 so I wanted to play this but never did. It always felt like a lesser alternative but probably still a decent game. It felt just a little too close to generic 00's FPS in many ways.
>>12247029>Now that the dust has settled, why wasn't this game appreciated more?It felt like it was stuffed more with 'modernized shooter' tropes like long elevator rides, unskipabble in-game NPC encounters, turret/vehicle sections. Still had variety to enemies, and you at least weren't limited to 2-3 weapons.
>>12247278>it was stuffed more with 'modernized shooter' tropes like long elevator rides, unskipabble in-game NPC encounters, turret/vehicle sectionsThis. The gunplay was also very unsatisfying, the weapons were weak as af.
>>12247029I lost interest after the vehicle part. They should know better than putting an annoying ass section so early in the game. That said I really should replay it. I loved Doom 3 so I presume Q4 should be a good time.
all games and movies follow the same pattern>1 - the proof of concept>2 - the perfection of concept>3+ - the uninspired cash grab to milk the ip long after the original creators have moved on
Pseudo military shit in the beginning seemed like it was going to be Call of Quake. I dropped it there, but I assume that stops eventually.
>>12247689Halo is exactly like this.
>>12247029I was carried through the game on my first walkthrough because of nostalgia, feeling amazed at watching those Strogg enemy designs from Q2 upgraded into what was cutting edge graphics back then. After that, playing it felt like a chore; like walking into a Haunted House where you don't get scared because you know every trick it has already. The issue with Q4 and D3 is that Id Games wanted to jump into the cinematic trend most games were getting into, especially with FPS that were slower and more "tactical". In other words, they made games that felt generic compared to many other shooters from the mid 2000s, when Id Games' biggest strength had been setting up trends themselves.
q4max is the best afps of q2's lineage
>>12247029Retarded butthurt Quake 2 fans are the reason this game bombed. It's probably my favorite alone standing game in the ID game universe ( I know it was made by Raven software). It deserved so much better, there was even a sequel planned that got canceled, because the bad reception this game got. And I'm salty about it to this day. This game was FUCKING AMAZING. I'll fight anyone IRL who disagrees.
>>12247689Quake 3 was indeed milking of the IP
>>12247851i agree, it's a great gamebut i still wanna fight because i'm reallyyy boredhow about you?
>>12247851>This game was FUCKING AMAZINGWhy? Its call of duty with robots
>>12247897Fight me in ZDoomwars. I put up a thread, but no one is responding in it.
>>12247902You're a retarded nigger. It's from before Call of Duty became popular. It had vehicles, multiple bosses, really amazing map design very crude artwork, seeing the marines being turned into strogg processing units. It had the classic boomer style of having the entire arsenal up your ass. It was an amazing game, and way too good for its time. People didn't appreciate it.
>>12247908>>12247902ok i blame Q4 for COD games.... i love STALKER : Clear Sky :Faction Wars mod though.
>>12247029>Didn't look or feel drastically different from Doom 3, art style in general didn't stand out from other scifi shooters in the wake of Halo besides having more emphasis on gore and body horror>Multiplayer is derivative of Quake III but with higher system requirements and lamer skins>Xbox 360 port ran like ass and made a bad first impression as a launch game>Overshadowed by F.E.A.R. and Call of Duty 2
The game was great. I remember being scared shitless in those zombie segments in the sewers- toxic industrial area.
>>12247029Still mad that the expansion was canceled at the last moment and the cliffhanger never resolved
>>12247029Generic crap from a has been of a company. Willits style.
Feels like a Doom 3 mod.
>>12248247>millennial brainrot: the post
dunno, my only gripe with it was that the vehicle sections which should've been the highlight felt somewhat janky and unsatisfying
>>12247278>>12248621These and the weapon and resource balance are the real reasons. There are 3 Quake games with Single Player campaigns, and Quake 4 is generally regarded as the worst. Let's examine what Quake 1 and 2 do well that Quake 4 fails at.Quake 1:>fast>enemies are tough and do high damage, but aren't bullets sponges>difficulty derived from fast enemies and action and tight ammo counts>playing levels from shotgun start is near impossible, you need to save ammo between levels>state of the art graphics, sound, and aestheticsQuake 2:>slow>enemies are bullet sponges>there is no difficulty>you never run out of ammo>despite all this, it still has state of the art graphics, sound, and aestheticsQuake 4:>slow>bullet sponge enemies>no difficulty>absurdly too much ammo, if you save a single rocket ever you're doing it wrong>nothing about it is state of the art, feels like a Doom 3 mod, somehow looks worse than Doom 3, only thing it does that Doom 3 doesn't do is outside areas, and they don't look great and have ugly 2D skyboxes.
>>12247029>Q2 completely changes the lore/aesthetic from Q1>meh singleplayer quickly got overshadowed by HL>Q3 again changes everything, goes multiplayer>completely overshadowed by CS and UT>2004 is the big year for FPS, HL2/Doom 3 both are hyped to high heavens>2005: "please care for Q4, we jumped back to Q2 lore again because we don't know what we want to do with the series">mogged in every way imaginable by every game that came shortly before/after itHuh I wonder why no one cared for it???
>>12248685>Q3 again changes everythingit's hard to imagine to a troonshoot zoomer but back then nobody thought of fps campaigns as more than obstacle courses that wear out their novelty after a single playthrough, while everyone was all over doom, quakeworld and quake 2 LANs, and q3a was straightforwarded q2mp
>>12247029It was sandwiched between HL2, its episodes, CoD2, and Fear. Similar to how Sin was buried under a barrage of other releases (HL is the most obvious one).
>>12249028>waaah my mommy won't give me pocket money for more than 1 gaem!!!!did people really? i remember playing literally everything that came out back thenyar har fiddle dee dee
>>12249028sin didn't come out at the wrong time it was just a mediocre game
>>12249508People talk about all sorts of mediocre fps games.
>>12249509like sin
>>12247048I thought the first person veiw of the stroggification process was pretty cool
A minor detail I liked was how the Strogg-stuff you can later interact with like the health stations is already around from the get-go instead of not appearing until it's relevant to you.
>>12247029Boomers didn't like it because it wasn't muh Quake 1 and people just saw it as Doom 3 - Quake 2 Edition
>>12247029I get that it was the engine's fault, but not being able to gib enemies was a dealbreaker for me. I liked to watch the Strogg blow into pieces and also go through a stage before reaching the exit to watch the remaining bodies laying all over the place. Having the Strogg ragdoll and then dissapear because of 'muh recycling through nanomachines' sucked.
>>12250586This is the main reason it's my most beloved (unmodded) boomer game to this day. Raven Software really tried to do something special with this game. They tried to please both a Call of Duty fanbase, and a Quake fanbase, and ended up pleasing neither, except a few people like me who thought this game was fantastic. Who cares if wasn't as fast paced as the previous Quake games, people always complain "Hurr durr, they're just spitting out the same crap every year" when it comes to Call of Duty, but clearly that's what people want, even a Quake fanbase.
>>12250779Was there seriously zero gore? You couldn't even blow their heads off? Did it at least feature Doom 3's 'turn them into a bloody skeleton' system?
>>12251231I think the mid 2000s was the last era where developers had the balls to be truly experimental and radically different with their sequels.
>>12251282Not even. Similar to Doom 3, it was also somewhat of a hardware limitation consideration.
