ummm... fpga bros... i thought we were supposed to be as good or better than original hardware... not worse than software EMULATORShttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wrbyP7y5z80
The Analogue Pocket is not the Analogue 3D.
worse than a software emulator you cant even make this shit up lmao
>>12247709An FPGA is only as good as its program. It's no different than them "printing" their own ICs.If the logic network is crap the result is crap. But potentially CAN be superior in pretty much every aspect.
>>12247726Part of the issue is Analogue are only targeting the original vanilla software catalogue, and there's a huge appeal in aftermarket sofware for these systems.
>>12247709based autist kaze really blew the lid on this one but the shills will suppress it

>>12247971prove it.
>>12247971POTENTIALLY more accurate. But seems like for now they failed to use that potential.FPGA programming is no easy task, with the mess that is VHDL or graphic network tools like Labview.
>>12247984Seconding this
>>12247947It's like that for anything really. For example in the Saturn scene some youtubers have been really pushing the Saroo for the past year. Turns out the thing can't even do a basic memcpy from the emulated CD drive to RAM without corrupting the data.
>>12248038qrd on what this means?
>>12248285Basically when you load a file into memory from the CD-ROM Block on the Saturn, it shouldn't have errors in it. The CD-ROM Block does it's own checks using the ECC data and will keep retrying if the check fails. Corrupt data will never be sent out to the rest of the system. So a failed checksum here means that corrupt data made it out of the CD-ROM Block and into the Saturn. The test is essentially testing the absolute bare minimum functionality of what an ODE should be able to do.Running this test on a real Saturn using a CD, as well as all the other ODE solutions that just replace the drive all pass the test with 0 checksum failures after running for hours. Even emulators like Mednafen and even Yabause pass this test. The MiSTER Core even passes. Saroo however fails this test and will occasionally send corrupt data from it's emulated CD-ROM block. This corrupt data can be anything from graphical data, text and script data, audio data, or even program code. So this can result in the corrupt graphics and audio, odd game behavior, or even a crash. When we look at the Saroo Github issue tracker there's tons of random odd reports of weird glitches and crashes that people have trouble reproducing. There's also reports of people running into random crashes and problems the longer they play. So most likely this data corruption problem is the cause of those random issues that have been hard to reproduce. Most likely it's a race condition in the Saroo firmware, though it could possibly be a hardware problem as well.
>>12248323Damn, is this inherent to the Saroo hardware or could a firmware update fix it?
>>12248323>race conditiongod damn it nigs and jews even inside my game console
>>12247709wahhh meanwhile I’ve been enjoying my 3D for weeks now, just hit 60 stars in Mario. bing bing wahoo, bitches!
The pill to swallow is that software emulation's better portability and ease of patching/updates makes it better than hardware emulation in the long run.
>>12248038People were "pushing" Saroo because it's potentially a best of all worlds solution, allowing you to keep your disc drive AND your card slot. Accusing it of being a shill-driven campaign makes no sense when the entire project is open source and any random chink can (and do) produce their own carts. People are still actively working on firmware for it and some of its issues have already been solved in beta and private builds. It's no different to the SummerCart64 in nature, which also causes a lot of seethe from people peddling hugely expensive proprietary alternatives.
>>12248285Saroo is marketed as the only Saturn backup loader that requires no system modification and costs under $200 USD (as Satiator, which goes in the slot on the back is $200 and always out of stock). The problem with this marketing is that Saroo has the worst compatibility of any modern option for playing Saturn games (even emulators), and needs extensive patching to even be able to boot games.Meanwhile, other ODE options that require no modification to your system other than opening the console and unplugging your disk drive have been cloned and are now cheaper than Saroo. These options have 99.5% compatibility and don't require game patching. The Sega Saturn disk drive is held in place by the case and isn't even screwed down, it's the easiest console mod of all time. So there is no reason to buy or support Saroo.
>>12248392It could be either honestly.>>12248648>People were "pushing" Saroo because it's potentially a best of all worlds solution, allowing you to keep your disc drive AND your card slotThe "card slot" is only used by an extremely niche Video CD card that Saroo can't even use because it's part of the real CD-ROM Block which can't be turned on while Saroo is in use.> Accusing it of being a shill-driven campaign makes no sense when the entire project is open source It does when you see the cult like behavior of it's fans who explode any time anyone points out it's flaws.>People are still actively working on firmware for it This is true for all the ODE solutions.> some of its issues have already been solved in beta and private builds. Not really, it's been mostly bad band-aid fixes and as shown in the checksum test it fails at it's most basic fundamental function as an ODE. If they can't get that right I highly doubt the other features are working correctly.
>>12247709why is werner herzog sperging out about retro gaming

If they can't get that right I highly doubt the other features are working correctly. That's the beauty of open source projects - anyone can work on it. Many of the fixes found so far have been by the community, not the original developer. Maybe it'll never be perfect. Maybe a firmware fixing every flaw and with a built-in port of The Witcher 3 will be released tomorrow. I won't lose any sleep either way, and I doubt anyone who paid $40 for a chink cart from AliExpress will either. You, however, seem intent on spending your time seething about an ODE for a failed 30 year old games console, because some retarded Jewtuber who nobody's forcing you to watch was overexcited about it. The thing is they can't ever create a perfect clone of any system with FPGAs, unless the model the circuit itself. Not just create a bunch of modules that act like the circuit. This is how almost all FPGAs currently work, is they actually are just a bunch of modules all wired up together doing what the circuit is supposed or even THOUGHT in some cases to do. The inside part of each FPGA's component is just some code people wrote to the best of their ability, to provide the correct inputs and outputs, just like the entire rest of the circuit. They are doing their best to model the behavior of each component. But subtleties and black magic in silicon make the end goal of 100% flawlessly perfect emulation or FPGA "program" creation extremely difficult to attain. The various FPGA entertainment systems and open-source cores do something from an OK job to an impressive job but NONE claim 100% bug free under every circumstance entirely perfect recreation and now there are benchmark suites to prove this and it's causing people to have real big tantrums online and I love it. I'm not saying FPGA is good or bad or emulation or whatever. I think we live in a fun time. But people just latch on to viral internet marketing and e-celeb talking head nonsense and start believing in magic and getting really emotional.
>>12249524this seems really exaggerated. ive had a saroo since they first hit a few years back. i think i updated the firmware once some time after i got it, but i have never had a problem with playing anything I wanted to play. I've played several games to completion on it.
>>12249603I accept your concession
>>12249023>Well the hope has been that someone would find a way around such limitations in time, even if the original developer said he had no plans to work on it.There is no way to work around that limitation. It's a very hard set limitation. The MPEG card is part of the real CD-ROM block. If Saroo is emulating the CD-ROM block through the cartridge port the real CD-ROM block can't be activated. If the real CD-ROM block isn't activated, the MPEG card can't be accessed. If you enable the real CD-ROM block then there will be a conflict between the emulated CD-ROM block in Saroo and the real CD-ROM Block and you will get a crash because now the real CD-ROM block will be trying to return data from the non-existent CD in it's drive. And the developer has made it pretty clear that the hardware in Saroo isn't powerful enough to emulate both the CD drive and the MPEG card at the same time. It might be able to do one or the other to allow you the novelty of playing MPG files from the menu, but that's probably it.>You're by far the most emotionally invested person I've come across when it comes to it. I haven't seen anyone denying its flaws either. They're documented and obvious. You clearly haven't been paying attention then. It's pretty rampant on places like X/Twitter, Reddit, etc.>Objectively yes, really.>As you admit. (in reference to bad band-aid fixes)Then they're not really fixes. They're attempts at hiding the problem.>That's the beauty of open source projects - anyone can work on it.But few people actually do, especially for something as niche as a Saturn flash cart. That's the other side of the double edged sword.
>>12249524>My saroo launches every game i throw at it without patching. If you're playing any of the RAM cart games or other games referenced in this file, they're being patched:https://github.com/tpunix/SAROO/blob/master/Firm_Saturn/game_patch.c>I play my saturn everyday and i only occasionally have a game crash once every 2 to 3 weeks.>Ive only ever had the saroo load garbage graphics ONCE. Then it's not running flawlessly. There's clearly a problem in the CD-ROM Block emulation that needs fixed. Being able to load files without corrupt is literally step one of an ODE. The fact Saroo fails that test really speaks volumes for the overall quality of the device.
The video praises the Analogue thing at the end. Nobody except speedrunners care about any of this stuff. I am not recommending anyone buy one just pointing out that the people who care about this stuff are retarded.
>>12249075If the only thing you have is a weak android device
>>12250040Nope its objectively the best n64 emulator. Every game works flawlessly. The fact that you dont need powerful hardware just makes it better. Why the fuck should you have to use extreme power to run an n64.
>>12250095>flawlesslyPlayable doesn't mean flawlessEven Nintendo's official emulation fucks up certain effects that are only emulated properly on accurate emulators like Ares
>>12250123No effects are lost on it when you use the very accurate core.
>>12247709I'm surprised it fixes the DK64 attract mode issue because none of the shill videos showed that game off and I was certain it was because it was fucked. You'd think that would be a selling point for the autists that care about FPGAs.
>>12247976>things that absolutely aren't happening>>12250212dk64 is a slop game that doesn't even take full advantage of the hardware its running on. not really a good title to use for showing off n64 capabilities. and absolutely fucking nobody in this ever expanding universe wants to listen to that cringe intro music ever again>>12250123>Even Nintendo's official emulation>official emulationlmao
>>12247820I like FPGA systems, but they're never going to be superior to real hardware in any aspect and it's not because of capabilities, but economics. It's all diminishing returns. You can put together something like the analogue 3d, lie about its accuracy, solve the rest with marketing and paid shills and find a price point for the thing that is honestly retarded, but attainable. Actually developing a truly faithful FPGA implementation of the N64 makes no economic sense for Analogue, because ultimately the price point would be unreasonable and nobody would buy their shit, no matter how "Apple-like" they try to be. The MiSTer FPGA project has a better chance to deliver whatever acccuracy you nerds think the analogue 3d has, simply because it's an open source project with no timelines or deadlines. I'd recommend getting one of these over any other analogue product. However, I'm positive out of the box hdmi, sleek plastics and cool marketing are more important than accuracy, so I'm not surprised to see the opinions expressed by posters here.
>>12250010You're absolutely correct: it's not running flawlessly. It's a subpar product compared to a Fenrir and a 4MB ram cart. So what? I have one of the "good" carts and bought it knowing it's full of bugs. But it's cheap as fuck, I didn't have to buy an additional 4MB ram card or a memory card, the bugs I get hardly ever crash the console (most are of the garbled graphics variety and usually resolve themselves after any loading screen), and I didn't have to remove the CD drive like I would have to do with the Fenrir (yes, I know there was an accessory once upon a time that let you have the Fenrir and keep the drive). The way I see it, it's a tradeoff between convenience and accuracy. My question is: Why are you so affected by a market with MORE options? How are you affected by the Saroo existing? It's fine to warn users about the quirks/issues of the cart, but you are a member of a group of folks constantly hating on the thing. It's kinda weird, honestly.
>>12250687I have a mister and I agree with you 100%, yet I still consoomed the 3D because of the plastics. I hate myself.

>>12247947>buy hardware to emulate hardwareI knew it was a bad deal from the start. Sorfware emulation is where it's at and where it always will be.Yes, for economic and sociological reasons, the N64 will never, EVER be perfectly emulated.
