Damn what a downgrade from gen 2>inb4 nostalgiaRuby was my first Pokémon game and rpg.
>>12247741In what way?
The irony that I started with Silver and I think gen 3 was a massive upgrade from 2 in every single way.
>>12247741What a well presented opinion that surely won't start shit.
OP is completely right, they have some merits and are presented well but were incredibly disappointing on release. So many removed mechanics and the scope of the games felt so much smaller thanks to reverting back to 8 badges. Plus you can't even get all of the Pokemon anymore and there was no way to transfer your old ones over, a huge selling point for the previous games.
>>12247862Spoken like somebody who wasn't there.Nobody in 2003 gave a damn that you couldn't transfer your Dunsparce over, it was all about the new Pokemon. Genwunners weren't a thing. The kids who liked Mewtwo moved onto liking Lugia and then onto liking Rayquaza.
>>12247862>So many removed mechanicsMany of them were relatively superficial though, like the day/night cycle which was functionally just a way to cram more Pokemon into an area without stepping on each other's toes>8 badgesToo busy releasing actual remakes instead of trying to cram them all into one game>no way to transferPokemon data was completely different from Gens 2 and 3, the game would have to just make up half of the Pokemon's attributes, and even then the only real backwards compatibility would be the ones transferred from Gen 2
>>12247741>>12247862>downgrade>removed mechanicsI genuinely find this point of view puzzling. So many halfbaked mechanics from gen 2 like hold items and berries were completely revamped for gen 3, on top of new huge additions like abilities, double battles, contests, and the only things I can think of that were removed were >nocturnal pokemon>day of the week-dependent eventsand both of those sucked.
>>12247872>Day/night cycle is superficialIt's an enormous part of what made Gold and Silver comfy as fuck. You're also forgetting the thorough weekly schedule, replaced by two or three minor things that reset with the day. More Pokemon variety per area is a good thing, by the way. These games were something I and many others played all the time, having the game change as the days themselves did made them feel much more like another world when you're younger.>Too busy releasing actual remakes instead of trying to cram them all into one gameNo one knew FR/LG were coming out at the time R/S first hit, and that's still another whole game you had to get a year and a half later. The remakes were cool enough but felt odd given how relatively soon they were, and weren't as big of an improvement as they could have been had Gen 3 retained more of Gold and Silver's mechanics.>Pokemon data was completely different from Gens 2 and 3I'm aware of the technical reasons now, but to kids back then it was a hard sell. "Gotta catch em all" was the tagline of the entire franchise up to that point. I know that wasn't how the games were marketed in Japan, but again, that doesn't matter for the western audience. I don't think people would have cared if Natures and the like would have to be made up, it would be getting a new side to your old bros.>>12247870>Spoken like somebody who wasn't there. You're right that Genwunning wasn't a thing at the time and everyone was excited for more new Pokemon, but that didn't mean people wanted to abandon their old ones they spent years with. The franchise as a whole was aimed around companionship with your favorites and amassing a huge Pokedex in an expanding world. Having it suddenly feel so confined and limited was a rugpull. Obviously it would have been an enormous undertaking to make a double region all out of new assets with the upgraded graphics, but the precedent had been set and no kid is thinking about that part.
>>12247890Don't bother. Gen 2 fags were still drinking the gotta catch em all kool aid and don't care about new battle mechanics.
>>12247870Gen 2 contrarians were a thing but the vast majority of people gradually moved on during this time. There is always old good new bad sentiment for any series. This narrative of Gold and Silver were universally beloved by everyone in 1999 just wasn't true.

I havent played vanilla games in decades but emerald kaizo is the best pokemon game of all time so gen 3 wins in my book. all of the gen 2 hacks Ive tried were not nearly as good.
>>12248118Holy based. Crystal Kaizo+ was my favorite gen 2 hack, but I agree it's not as good.
>>12248118I still have no fucking clue how I managed to get past flannery. permanent sun fire team and all six members have a no charge solar beam. made worse because my best pokemon swampert was virtually useless.
>>12247741>what a downgrade from gen 2i think Gen 2 was peak. but GBA games obviously looked better than GBC Pokeman Crystal.>>12247862>transferswasted potential but hardly affected muh sales. it's not like Nintendo cared much about backwards compatibility anyways. would it have been possible to make GBA use the same link cable as Gameboys to transfer data? who knows.>8 badgessure i agree that i would love to have more gym leaders to fight.>>12247890>day/nighti think it's a cool effect for visuals and not just for pokemon lore and stuffing more pokemon into 1 area. no reason to leave it out except maybe time contraints in development.>day of week eventi already forgot about this and don't care for them.
>>12248118>all of the gen 2 hacks Ive tried were not nearly as good.play Gen 2 remake for NDS or something? inb5 not retro NDS.
>>12248142I honestly prefer the Pokémon sprites from gen 2 to anything else, they way they use whites and blacks was peak
>>12248129>all six members have a no charge solar beam.don't remember this. i guess get a fast paralyser pokemon and hope they don't move. or use spec defence item buff on a tankier pokemon. there's also double team on high speed pokemons, but that also kinda depends on luck like paralyzing them.
>>12248148There's no Emerald Kaizo equivalent for gen 4. The same creator uploaded a Platinum Kaizo teaser trailer on his Patreon recently.>>12248129>>12248159Swampert being 4x weak to grass makes it a nice pivot. For example, you know Blaziken will Solarbeam it, so you can switch to Crobat to Air Slash it to death. There's other really good options like Gyarados, Volt Absorb Lanturn, and Torkoal with Earth Power.
>>12248153Agreed anon. I also think yellows color sprites are decent, but I have a soft spot for silvers sprites.
>>>/vp/Stop spamming these fucking threads.
Not just a downgrade, but a letdown. I was expecting something like Golden Sun, but R/S looked like shit.
>>12248301You were expecting endless yapping?
>>12247741I was there for 1+2 and loved them, though by the time 3 had come out I had grown past pokemans and was too busy getting puss as a functioning soon to be adult. During covid I tried 3 and was utterly bored. It felt bland and sterile. They barely introduced any new pokemon for the criminally underused ghost and dark types and no good moves for most types while flooding in more of the already oversaturated types with op moves. Hoenn is boring as shit and travel feels tedious, by the time I got to Slateport city I wanted to be done and I stopped playing for awhile when I realized 33% of the map is just surfing. Johto and Kanto felt huge by comparison and flowed smoothly while in Hoenn I constantly felt like I was running back to do shit and none of it was memorable no matter how hard they tried to push it with muh floating city muh tree top city. I didn't give a fuck about the Teams and their stupid fight, making the game about legendary Pokemon and le ebic battle sucked massive donkey dick, I just wanted to be a trainer getting ready for the elite 4 not saving the world. At least Team Rocket and their antics always seemed plausible.I will freely admit though the sprites themselves are fantastic and 3 is the only gem that nailed the aesthetic of how the world should look. Also they were extremely based and understood the importance of exposed tummies and thighs.
>>12248321I like many of Hoenn's individual locations since it has some excellent themed spots and routes, but the map as a whole is far weaker than Kanto or Johto, I agree. You're right on the money about getting from one place to the next being tedious and kind of boring, with a LOT of HM use to progress anywhere. I know the "too much water" thing is a meme at this point but it's one for a reason, no one was clamoring for more water routes when they were one of the most annoying parts of the first two games. There were already a ton of water traversal moves necessary to get around before with Surf, Waterfall, and Whirlpool... then Gen 3 added yet another one in Dive. An entire HM slave's moveset.I also agree that they started to make a huge mistake in trying to center the story around the Teams and Legendaries from that point on. Gold and Silver dipped its toes in the concept but it didn't feel like it got in the way of the main quest to be Champion at all, to the point that the remakes had to make Ho-oh and Lugia a bigger deal to match modern Pokemon at the time.
>>12248321>johto and kanto felt hue by comparison and flowed smoothlybecause you were a child. not anything inherent to the actual region design.
>>12248159yeah Im remembering now that sleep scumming+a bunch of retries to get good sleep RNG is how I did it. and even then it was crazy hard. I didnt have nearly that much trouble with anyone else until I got to elite 4.
>>12247862Pretty much this but I wouldn't say disappointing, underwhelming might be a better word. I received Sapphire Christmas of 2003 and enjoyed it, but not as much as gens I & II.
>"gen" rhetoricMentally ill fanfiction
fuck off spamer
>>12247870>Nobody in 2003 gave a damn that you couldn't transfer your Dunsparce over,Wrong. Gen 3 was so lame that I didn't care to actually own it. I emulated it and stopped caring after beating the game. I remember thinking wtf where is the night cycle.
>>12247741>>inb4 nostalgiaDude, this board hates 3rd gen more than Shigeru Miyamoto hated DKC
>>12248653>this board hates 3rd genI don't think anyone on this board hates the NES or Master System. The fuck are you on about?
>>12248656You know I meant Pokemon, you cheeky cunt
>>12248512That's fair enough. I'm not going to pretend like they weren't still good games, and it definitely depends on how much one personally cares about the elements of Gold and Silver that got cut as to where on the scale of disappointed versus underwhelmed one might fall.
>>12248317No. I was expecting good graphics. Gen 3 was hideous.
>>12248334Blue tiles are the same as green tiles you niggers are retarded
>>12248885>encounter a shitty wingull or tentacool every five seconds >same music They are not
>>12248885Water requires several HMs to traverse as the game goes on and Surf by default, land routes you might need Rock Smash or Strength on a rare occasion, usually when entering a cave which are uncommon. Using Surf cancels out the route music until a transition meaning you will be able to hear said music in your head for the rest of your life, as I am right now.Land routes are designed around either going through the grass or fighting trainers, water routes are 100% encounter tiles so they don't bother and make most of the trainers forced anyways. Repels "fix" this, in an extremely tedious way as you have to constantly reapply them manually. Water routes all look very similar outside of one or two exceptions whereas land routes try to have a decent amount of variety. Pokemon variety is also completely out the window, with the same few encounters across the entire game while grass is constantly introducing new mons.
>>12248649>wtf where is the night cycleNo one with a brain cared about this.
>>12249016I did because it meant more pokemon availability, something rse needed and it also made the world feel more alive.
the only thing I think ruined the whole genre is IVs and breeding. If they had just never put those into the game I think I could enjoy the game without some retard being like "omg you didn't do your IVs, what is wrong with you" I fucking hate pokemon autists.
>>12249032idk why i said genre, meant to say games.
>>12249026Hoenn had no problems with Pokemon availability aside from the water encounters. Night cycle is not needed to fix that.>>12249032This is fair. I remember they switched from Gotta Catch Em All to "look how cool double battles are!!" in the commercials. Breeding was originally something you did to hatch baby Pokemon for the dex, now you're committing eugenics for 31 IVs and the right natures.
>>12249071its the dumbest shit ever in a video game that you're supposed to have fun in. I think the issue is Autism ruins everything.
This gen introduced the pagents and shit right? That's when I started losing interest in pokemon.
>>12249090pageants were obviously designed with girls in mind, weird how it didn't catch on with them
>>12249093Probably because there was hardly any gameplay to it and pokemon already had a pretty universal appeal, iirc you'd up your pokemon's pageant stats with berries or some shit? That feels like EV training or other autistic stuff that's not going to appeal to the average girl.
>>12249090Contests were an interesting side thing for me. I think musicals from gen 5 are more what you're thinking of. Those were shit.
>>12249090>>12249093>>12249103Contest are unnecessary harder than the main game, you can't grind a win
>>12247741I only consider DS Pokémon games to be decent, but it's not retro so... but Kanto is Johto postgame, and imagine playing GSC over HGSS. Also Hoenn without day and night cycles is an insta no to me. Pokémon must be comfy and the GBA games are not.
>>12249016Pokemon is a game based around a childlike sense of adventure. The night cycle and shifting events added to that.By making the world almost fully static and stuck in perpetual day, you remove a level of wonder. A game reflecting elements of the real world while still being one of fantasy, no matter how seemingly superficial it may be, was incredibly appealing to the target audience.>>12249093The Contests were severely underbaked and such a small part of the games that it's no wonder no one ever cared about them. They weren't implemented in a way where girls would care that much despite being the reason they were added in the first place, Gen 4 tried to remedy this some but still didn't land it. Game Freak simply didn't care enough to try pushing it further because it's much easier to make more cute Pokemon designs and win simple minds over that way.
>>12249476>likes day/night cycle>hates gen 3 contestsAs I said, no brain.
My first gen was gen2, but I HIGHLY doubt that if I were to go back to gen3, it would be as disappointing as gen2 is. Gen2 is terribly linear and rigid, I had an awful time replaying it. I wish I hadn't honestly, the rose-tinted glasses are gone now. There's no way I wouldn't enjoy myself way the fuck more with gen3 if I replayed it
>>12249667Replayed both recently, nothing in gen 2 is as bad as seafloor cavern
>>12248649>where is the night cyclethey legit got lazy in gen 3 and it shows in many waysthe game actually records time and could have done day/night but they couldn't be assed to switch pallets
>>12249681The real answer is they never fixed the accelerated battery drain issue from the real time clock and they worked on shit older fans didn't care about.
>>12249691Quite the opposite, older fans were pissed and dropped the series while kids didn't know better
>>12249703"Older fans" as in the ones around for gen 1 and 2, kids or not.
>>12249476>The night cycle and shifting events added to that.No they didn't. Gen 3 having an actual story and real secrets to discover with actual payoffs did.
>>12249736New Kids were 5-10 older fans were 11-14
>>12247741If you didn't care about graphics, then yes they were a let down
