Am I missing out if I don't play Baroque on a Saturn? My friend really likes this game but he also says the other versions suck. I only have a ps2 and ps1.
>>
PS2 version is soulless. Just emulate the Saturn version. Wait... don't tell me you don't know how to emulate..
>>
>>12247782
What about the PS1 version?
>>
>>12247802
ps1 version looks worse and has a bunch of issues
>>
>>12247826
what issues?
>>
>>12248243
Graphics aside there's no serious issues I know of, it's just a different game on PS1 with more bloat, so the experience isn't the same. Original Saturn is so distinct they ported explicitly that version to switch a few years ago.
>>
>>12247767
Only if you are the type to dislike sudden sound cuts with music.
>>
>>12248250
The PS1 version has more content with a bigger nerve tower but the visual effects weren't ported properly so it looks like shit in comparison to the Saturn original.
>>
>>12247767
If you don't have access to something to emulate it or the ability to do so the ps1 version is the next best thing, but as established in the thread it makes a lot of visual compromises and the new content is mostly bad. Don't play the ps2 version it's trash.

In the PSX version the draw distance works in such a way that you can see the game world pop in and out one tile at a time rather than all at once which looks distracting and hurts the atmosphere imo
Otherwise it has more content but the only interesting thing about it are some of the new items/weapons which are cool, however there are also a lot of new detrimental/trap items as well to the point that at some point I just avoided all the patterns in the PSX version because the likelyhood of getting fucked just because of stepping on the item was too high.
PSX version also adds 5-6 more floors in the main dungeon but imo they add absolutely nothing to the experience and just stretch it out unnecesarilly.
PSX also has a 100 floor post game bonus and for having gone through it let me tell you that it's not worth it and it's mostly pain, grind, and misery.
PSX version also makes it easier to keep your items in between runs and the clues on how to progress are more clear and a slightly higher internal resolution.

I'd suggest playing the Saturn verison and check out the PSX version if you like the game enough. I haven't played PS2.

Saturn vs PSX

This is one of the most overhyped games on this board its shovelware don't even bother

Another advantage of the Saturn version over the PSX is that it supports the analog stick in the 3D controller, which makes Baroque much more playable.

The PS2 version is animefied crap.

>>
I think the PS2/Wii version has its own interesting look, and I like how it has a third-person mode.
>>
Baroque is my favorite game. I can't wait ro play it.
>>
>>12248473
It looks pretty cool but the controls are janky bc you can't look up or down and the story doesn't make much sense to me. aesthetically, it reminds me a lot of SMT.
>>
>>12249598
>you can't look up or down
You can. But not much.
>>
I played for a bit and then I died after several floors and it put me back at the start. So I was like "cool" and turned it off. Nice graphics but I don't fucking get it. I know it's like adventure on atari but I was just expecting more than die and go to the start
>>
>>12247767
They're basically different games. For a first Baroque experence, play the Saturn version. If you like it a whole lot and need more Baroque, play the Ps2/Wii version, although you may not like it depending on your reasons for liking the original.
>>
>>12247782
I know how to emulate it's just that I already have a ps1 ps2 and wii so I may as well play one of the versions I can run natively.
>>
>>12248540
>plays on weeb console
>hates weeb graphics
>>
>>12249894
The PS2/Wii version's visuals are fine desu. It's just in that generation of console's style. It's also the most gameplay rich version of the game and you can also play it in first person if you really want to.

>>
I'm playing the ps1 fan translated version. The vitality system is really annoying and for some reason I go like twice as fast when spamming the shoulder buttons. Any tips?
>>
>>12250125
the one thing i wish i learned sooner was to use the throw option to throw objects at enemies as much as possible instead of engaging them head on. i don't think i'd want to play this game blind, i used the https://nervetower.neocities.org/ guide
>>
>>12250140
yeah my friend showed me how to do that and I've been abusing the hell out of it especially with the red guys that steal all your stuff
>>
>>12250125
It's a real time roguelike, you have to learn about the items and how they work and how they can be utilized to survive better. This kind of game isn't for everyone.
>>
>>12250349
is there any way to block attacks other than just throwing shit or using a invincibility bone?
>>
>>12250363
Other than using footwork and knowing the enemy patterns, no. The original version of the game can also hinge on luck a lot too because of the way a lot of enemies can block up entire corridor so if you're not getting decent weapons/coats, restorative items etc. your run can just be totally fucked. Less of an issue in the remake because fewer enemies can block you like that.
>>
>>12248472
Looks fine to me. Guess I'll have to play it to see how bad it really is.
>>
>>12248472
woah they actually got a (partially) 3D game to look that good on the shaturn?
>>
>>12249772
Well it is basically a rogue-like about suffering.
>>
>>12250363
Some enemies you can dodge their attacks, others you can't. It's up to you to learn which to be the most efficient possible.
Tactics differ too depending on the enemy when dodging is possible, sometimes you can strafe the attacks, sometimes you need to get back, or hide in a corner when possible etc Experiment to see what you can do and then use your best items for the toughest enemies

kind of a letdown that it's only on the switch
>>
>>12248465
I enjoyed the hell dungeon on PSX. I did it the "go in with nothing" way rather than the "use some weapon you grinded in the base game for 20 runs" way, I probably would have been way more stressed out if I'd tried to overprepare.
>>
>>12251157
Grinding for stat bonuses in the normal dungeon is a waste of time since it's so much easier and faster to do it in the hell dungeon, but bringing a good weapon and armor goes a long way
>>
-saturn version is the original one, slightly better graphics (i think)
-Ps1 got he hell dungeon as a bonus, but slightly less graphical athmosphere i think.
-avoid PS2 and WII, bad 3d graphics, all the "strange" and "disturbing" ennemies are redisigned (for worse) and the default view is a 3rd person viexw camera (a nonsense).

so go for staurn or ps1 (as you want) for the atmosphere.

one of my favourite game ever. the design of the universe and charaters is crazy, the story is lynchesque, the OST is awesome, and the rogue-dungeon crawler aspect is the meat of the game.
Hold baroque inside yourself.

*ahem* and protip : the death is part of the game and you MUST die to make the scenario advance.
>>
Only a handful of enemy types I found reliable ways of dodging their attacks. Not a great game desu but atmosphere is top notch.

This was the deciding factor in favor of playing the Saturn version for me. I'm a sucker for moody visuals and the use of chiaroscuro in the Saturn version is phenomenal.
It's funny how they even turned some of Saturn's weaknesses into strengths - the distance fog (darkness?) is done via color subtraction instead of the more expensive multiplication, making darker areas drown in shadows at a distance. Thanks to that, it looks stylized.
For the same reason I like looking at Powerslave's shading on Saturn. The shadows look kinda fried, which somehow works with the desert environment.
>>
>>12251185
At least go in and learn to kill the starting flea enemies without taking damage before you try to bring any good gear in, I can't imagine the ass devastation of losing power gear to that
>>
>>12251441
It's harsh and contrasty and the pulses of brightness feel extremely vibrant which is its own appeal.
>>
>>12250812
I could see limited run or someone similar picking tihs up for distribution with new translations.

That's a very good point, the draw distance just feels like it fades out naturally in the Saturn version while on PSX it just ends abruptly at the end of the tile, which coupled with the way you can see the world build up tile by tile is kinda shitty

Poor video I should make a better one
>>
>>12250812
I need this so bad with everything translated into english!
