The original release is generally agreed to be the worst Pokemon game that fits into the retro definition this board uses, and HG/SS is not retro under this boards rules. There's a certain kind of millennial that has extreme nostalgia for it, but it's the worst kind of nostalgia goggles, and even most millennial Pokemon fans skipped Gen 2.

The only thing I like about HGSS is how they restored parts of Kanto that were missing in the Gen 2 postgame and added some extra battles that were a bit more challenging. Stuff like the Pokewalker and following sprites are cute as well but don't make or break it for me. Other than that its the original all day every day for me: Less interruptions for the gay story that nobody gives a fuck about, game overall just feels faster and better paced, better art direction and animated battle sprites, better music, and its simply more soulful. Can't forget about Pokemon Stadium 2 compatibility either and, if you're a real freak willing to get into the weeds, the Mobile System GB. Oh yeah, and the Pokemon Pikachu 2 too. Actually on that note, I wonder if it'd be possible for someone to do a romhack for Gen 2 that added Pokewalker compatibility. It communicates through IR just like the Pokemon Pikachu 2 does, at least as far as I know, and I believe the program on the Pokewalker itself is even rewritable. That would be bad ass.

The main reason it even exists was to add online functionality via a cellphone adapter that didn't release outside of Japan. Even weirder is they didn't bother to include any of the stuff that was exclusively distributed by it in our version as offline content to make it more of a compelling purchase. They clearly thought about it, the egg that the day care man gives you for free was something you had to download from the internet in Japan, but they decided not to give us the Celebi event or a way to get any of the download exclusive items and none of the downloadable minigames. I genuinely don't understand why they wouldn't do this.

I prefer Silver over Crystal and Gold. Crystal has a dumb shoehorned story with Suicune and uses the inferior Gold sprites as the base for its animated sprites. Silver sprites are mostly better than Gold with few exceptions.
