I've played Tombs & Treasure and it was cool overall except for the softlocks. It's very easy to get softlocked on one puzzle in particular if you do things in the wrong order, with the correct order being more cryptic to figure out, and you'd have no way to know you're softlocked

also I don't know what's up with that ending and if they ever found the missing person? Did the story forget about its premise, wth

The sad and ironic reality is that NESkids - who laughed so much at speccyfags - are now seen by everyone born after 1995 as the same kind of delusional bongfag who raves about Fat Worm Blows a Sparky. In the end, all the mockeries served for nothing, as history will remember the NES as some outdated dinosaur no different from the ZX Spectrum. Pottery.

But nephews don't care about this. Everything from that era is prehistoric and unplayable to them. Even some zoomers think that way about the 16bit generation.

Many NES games went above the arcades. Not in terms of raw graphics, but home consoles provide and allow types of gameplay that is not possible in the "pay once every minute" format. The same is true with home computers as well, where they had genres that simply were not possible on arcades.

Like others have said, the NES is too archaic a machine for retro gamers to find enjoyable these days. Playable retro now begins at the PS2, which is quite understandable when considering the game design tenets of the earlier eras. Punishing difficulty, obscure mechanics and sterile environments make for an intensely jarring experience when you've been playing games made by an industry that already considered the NES obsolete and outdated as far back as the mid nineties. For these retro gamers - and I count myself among them - the sixth generation finally represents something relatable. Player controls in 3D environments are brought to an acceptable level and standardized; you are no longer staring at models resembling paper mache or Origami; narrative is no longer just an afterthought. As for the two generations between the third and sixth, the PSX and its contemporaries are generally too clunky and experimental. The SNES is interesting, as it can be considered a kind of "PS2 of the NES." The games are much more streamlined, the arcade mentality is mercifully dropped (for the most part), and here and there one can see a glimmer of modern game design sensibilities emerge. To conclude, I think it's only natural that discussion around the NES has been waning recently. Simply put, it is considered outdated by even retro gamers now, similar to what happened to the Atari 2600 in the past. Millennials may keep clinging to it, but time moved on and didn't judge their favourite childhood toy as being the classic they imagined it to be.

NES style games arr still popular with pople of all ages.
Maybe the only thing that makes NES a bit more difficult to get into for modern people is difficulty, but modern people use save states/rewind. So.
Yeah this whole "nes is not popular anymore!" is just wishful thinking from nes haters.
>>
What zoomersissies don't realize is that PS2 era games will be seen as more outdated than NES era games in another 10-15 years... hell, maybe not that much, since all the remakes we get are from 6th gen and early 7th gen games, games that younger people already see as unplayable and in huge need of renovation. Meanwhile, 3rd and 4th gen games will circle back to being seen as timeless, no remakes necessary, no possible improvement over perfection. 6th gen will go back to being the uncool, shitter version of contemporary games while real old games will always be their own unique thing, and 5th gen will always be the trippy experimental era of vidya, historically relevant forever. 6th gen sits in a land of nothing, jack of all trades, master of none.

>People in the past did not have worse taste than today; they knew how to distinguish between good and bad
Yes, but taste is always in context of what was available.
Consoles are a bit like racing cars.
The people in the 1930s weren't going under 200mph because they just decided they didn't want to go that fast.
They didn't have the option.
They could still build fast cars and understand and choose for speed, but within context.
Video games are similar. There are very good games and tech limits don't change that. Still, something like having to write down dialogue or make your own map was not a deliberate choice ( as retro-vision may suggest). It was a tech limitation. Or like having passkeys to return to a game instead of save files.

>Still, something like having to write down dialogue or make your own map was not a deliberate choice ( as retro-vision may suggest). It was a tech limitation.

You sound like one of those people who claim Simon Belmont's jump was a "tech limitation". Having a map or even an automap isn't the ultra complicated tech exploit you think it is and several NES RPGs like Mighty & Magic and Dragon Wars have automaps despite being some of the biggest RPGs on the system.
The difference is that making your own maps was considered part of the gameplay. Megami Tensei had a 3x5 map with the mappa spell, meaning they had already programmed in the hardest part needed to make full maps, but the full maps were for the player to make.
Gameplay exceptations evolved with time as games casualized, it's a similar situation as with the Dragon Quest series having rooms darkened until you go into them but the "HD" shitmasters let you see the full map because these days discovering a dead end and having to backtrack 3 steps is "objective bad design". I'm sure some of these new players think the darkened rooms were a "tech limitation" too because they can't comprehend gameplay expectations and standards ever being different.

I don't know what's the most embarassing, that so many people rate this mid ass JRPG so highly because it was one of the only ones released in the US, or that someone would have played the game "200 times" and still not know it's based on some manga/anime license rather than trying to be "historically accurate".
