Why didn't we become a prestigious iconic franchise like our brothers Tekken/VF/Soulcalibur? We were the talk of the town, right up there with them.

Well, unfortunately, Toshinden plays like shit, the other games were a little rough too but their late generation sequels were absolute bangers. Except Soul Edge, that first entry came out swinging and is still fantastic.
>>
I got the Playstation when it was brand new and of course this game, and I have to say it's both glacially slow and sloppy. I do like the idea of having a border toward which you can drive the opponent and they fall off and lose. That's nice. I did play the shit out of this game so that's my educated, there-at-the-time opinion.

Made by idiots. By far the worst “major” 3D fighting game of its time.

The series got a lot and I mean a LOT of mileage off the first game being impressive looking, despite not playing super well. Somehow the Game Boy port is the best version of the first game.

Yeah i remember Toshinden fondly because it was a reaally fun launch title in the absence of a lof of other 3d fighters and my friends and i playedit for hours. But Soul Edge was like the perfected version of it and mogged it and the sequels so brutally it became redundanf.

At least with something like the MK / Street fighter rivalry the games felt different and it was a kind of apples to oranges comparison. Toshinden and Soul Calibur were basically doing the same thing and one was just better at it than the other
>>
The Soul Calibur series did basically the same thing but better. That said, Toshinden had both fireballs and guns, which SC doesn't. If they ever try a comeback they should use that as a differentiator since Eiji for example feels like a shoto from a 2D game

>Minimum Specs: 486 DX2

How did they do it? I remember playing the demo on my 486 a lot just because of how stunning the graphics were
>>
The first game was something else, when it debuted on the Playstation 1 originally. It really was propped up by its visuals, which did look impressive for the time, when pit up against Virtua Fighter 1 on the Saturn. Sony really bragged about this games use of transparencies, coloured lighting and gourad shading. But the franchise felt like it was buried by Tekken and other later 3D fighting games on the console. Tekken 2 didn't have the same impact. The first one even spawned an OVA movie.

Are you kidding me? Tekken 2 had major impact, and the OVA was released after Tekken 2. Every Tekken up to Tag was a game changer.
>>
Kind of funny but battle arena toshinden is probably one of most influential game of all time

-introduce side step (that's a huge one)
-Introduce special attack in 3D versus fighting games
-introduce edged weapon in 3D versus fighting games
-first console exclusive 3D fighting game

Brain rot on my part. I meant to say Toshinden 2... which was overshadowed by Tekken 2 and other fighting games, in comparison to the first Toshinden.

Tekken 2 was the hottest PS1 fighting games until Tekken 3 came along, you dumb dumb.
>>
I feel like the PS1 had a lot of experimental 3D fighting games. Was Toshinden the basis for them all?
>>
>>12250814
everyone was trying to remake Virtua Fighter with their own little spin
>>
>>12250814
Tobal No. 1 is still great and amazingly smooth.

>Toshinden 2

OK, your post makes sense now.
